I think that greatest hits albums are a great idea, most of the ones you showed are fine examples of getting what you need without buying and listening to 5 albums to hear 5 favourite songs. Some collectors frown on this but I'm 100% with you.
@TheAlanRosenbergShowАй бұрын
Thanks Mark. As you said, some artists are perfect for a greatest hits / compilation album. As you mentioned, instead of some scattered great tracks scattered over many albums that are not that good individually - absolutely perfect solution. But with that said, even "big" artists I love that I have most if not all their albums - I still often get their comps - The Kinks are a great example. I have all their albums but the comps are great listens and my go-to Kinks albums on road trips as an example. Dire Straits also work amazingly well with comps, as do Blondie and many others. Anyway, as always,thanks.

Great concept and I agree with so many of your picks. As a completist of so many well known bands/artists as well as obscure ones there is only enough time for some artists best represented by a best of compilation . As you say many are not as if you don't appreciate or like them
@TheAlanRosenbergShowАй бұрын
Thanks so much. Exactly - a great compilation / hits collection might be all you need from an artist. But even an artist we truly love and have all or most of their albums - a really good compilation can be a very satisfying experience for an hour listen or so. And there a great intro for a newbie too. Same almost can apply to a great live album also. From one completist to another - thanks for your support and wonderful comment.

“One and Done” perfectly sums up Calum’s excellent idea for consolidating the best and/or most popular highlights of a band or an artist’s output. You did a great job of presenting all the pros of having nothing more than “a best of album” to represent certain artists in one’s collection. So much of your taste in music aligns with mine, so it comes as no surprise that I agree with practically every single one of the examples you displayed. I disagree with a few. Not because I would want more than just “the best of” album in my collection. But because the particular artist would be “None and Done” for me, as I would have no interest in making time or space for an album/CD that would always be at the bottom of all my listening options. Then, again, I’m not a collector. I truly appreciate hearing and learning from those, like yourself, who are passionate holders of the flame for the preservation of an ever-growing music library that is a source of fun, enrichment and shared happiness.

Hi Allen - very interesting video. I’m also from Aberdeen, Scotland 🏴. Although I’m a big Temptations fan I agree that a good compilation is all you really need. However with regards to Gorillaz - I do think that you really need a copy of Plastic Beach ! It is so convenient to have everything you want by a band of one comp. I think the Dead Kennedys were spot-on when they titled their compilation "Give Me Convenience Or Give Me Death." Good video, fun topic! I find, as I get older, that compilations are pretty much all i need by most people. I am currently in downsizing mode! Here are a couple of recommendations for you, Alan, if you don't have these bands already. First, Birth, School, Work, Death, the Best of the Godfathers, not to be confused with their proper album also called BIrth, School, Work, Death. They play tough British '60s and punk influenced rock and roll. Second, Once Upon a Time and Twice Upon a Time by Siouxsie and the Banshees (two separate CDs, one exploring the first part of their career, the second one the latter part). For me, compilations are usually a gateway to start buying the bands' regular albums, and I really like the studio albums by both of these bands that I own or have listened to, but if you're not up for deeply exploring their catalogues, these comps will provide you with a lot of great listening. Cheers!

I really enjoyed your video. New subscriber. I agree with a lot of your selections; but what about the various artists collections? I like getting the most bang for my buck. Many artists and groups from the 1950s - 1970s only had one or two hits, and even an entire CD is too much. The "Have A Nice Day" Rhino collections come to mind. Also, Time-Life has issued a lot of sets over the years. A lot of label collections have album-length songs on them. I managed to find "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" in its 17 min. version without buying the original album. Same with "Do You Feel Like I Do" (15 min. version) without buying "Frampton Comes Alive". Love those 2cd 'Gold' collections and the '20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection' compilations (the one i'm quoting happens to be Rare Earth)...they're perfect for collecting Motown treasures and other great 60's artists. If there's one thing in music that has gotten better this century, it has to be greatest hits albums. Gone are the days of basic ten track collections. These days, we have massive 20-40 track compilations that include 'deep cuts' along with early, rare and unreleased songs. These large comps make it even easier to own the essentials without tracking down album after album. 🎶

@martinstarnes2237Ай бұрын
I always loathed Greatest Hits albums when I was collecting vinyl, and thus I own just one in that format - Bill Withers Greatest Hits - that I can think of. The whole idea just seemed to drive a great big Greyhound/London bus through the care and time and effort that bands & artists put into the whole concept of an album back in the 'old days', and of course bands had little say in the record companies' decisions to release greatest hits compilations. And they certainly weren't aimed at the likes of me as a buyer. Looking through my CD collection, there are a few; The Best of the Doors Limited Edition (no idea why - I have all the Doors stuff on vinyl); two Best Ofs sent to me ten years ago along with some books and stuff by a Canadian I have never met who heard that I had been flooded out of my house!!! How cool is that!!!? They were The Best of Maddy Prior and Rick Wakeman - The Caped Collection. I also have the Lovin' Spoonful Collection on CD, and, ironically, bearing in mind my opening comment, my vote for my personal 'Record of 2024' (came out in 2023 actually), which is Now & Then - The Very Best of Richard Hawley, and which may be the very first Greatest Hits I have ever bought and paid full price for (Hawley played in Pulp with Jarvis Cocker for a while, has played with Duane Eddy & Paul Weller and even Lisa Marie (!!) and has eight solo albums, hence me getting the greatest hits one, which is a double CD). Try 'Don't Stare At The Sun' for starters if you don't know him. Go on, just play it!! And that, I think, is it. Funnily enough, though, in my old age I can see why the ones you highlighted from your collection fit very well, and why you don't need any other stuff from these artists. It makes sense when you have such a huge collection. Otherwise, I fundamentally disagree about Laura Nyro - I think New York Tenderberry is one of the great NYC albums and she really deserves her place alongside NYDolls, Lou Reed, Television, Blondie & Talking Heads etc as musical ambassadors for your great city based on that album alone. And no one, absolutely no one, needs a Carpenters album, and no, she was pretty rubbish on drums too, let's not kid ourselves. Ooh, controversial.........lol!! Btw, if you didn't spot my final Bill message, it was the Pete Roth Trio with Bill Bruford - no, I know not who Pete is either.
@TheAlanRosenbergShowАй бұрын
I didn't see your final message regarding Bruford - did you get in....I'm guessing not. Pete Roth Trio with Bill Bruford. it's a mystery. I've tried Nyro including NY Tenderberry. I don't know what it is. It's certainly not bad - for me was just ok. Similar thing happened yesterday - digging in to my backlog and tried Wendy Waldman (used to sing with Bryndle and Linda Ronstadt) - had a bunch of solo albums in the 70's. Listened to a compilation of her best stuff. Was ok. And with all the music in my backlog and catalog...I guess I just didn't need "ok". Frees up space and time. Interesting about Richard Hawley. I know him from Pulp (who I love) but had no idea he even had a solo career. Will never find his album in the US I doubt - will be on the lookout. But even as a "completist" like you, a good compilation can be a great listen - especially in the car with family (yes my car is old with a CD player). I have over 80 Kinks albums that I really like or love, but my #1 go-to play Kinks album is the 2 CD Ultimate Kinks...go figure. Thanks as always.

@@TheAlanRosenbergShow Well both my car and the missus' car have CD players still, so you are not alone! And if there is a reason for a greatest hits album, I suppose the car is as good a reason as any. Which is why I had forgotten Weather Report - The Collection, which lives in the car, and also various CD sets based on those sampler albums that the record labels brought out in the late sixties/early seventies (do you remember them) that featured one or two tracks from all their major artists and were cheaply priced. I still have quite a lot of these on vinyl, but the 3 CD sets of each (not exactly the same tracks, but including many on the original releases) - Charisma Anthology, Harvest Records Anthology, Island Records Anthology, Vertigo Retrospective etc) are a sort of Label Greatest Hits by any other name and are really good and tend to live in the car for long journeys. And the original LPs were where I first heard many a band (including, I am quite sure, Fairport). And, of course, every home surely has a Monkees Greatest Hits somewhere, which I had also forgotten about. I am sure I have. Probably in the car........ So I actually have more Greatest Hits than I realized, even if it's still only a few. Funny about Laura Nyro. I picked up Tendaberry (we've both spelt it wrong) on cassette way way back - had no idea who she was - and was transfixed by the time-changes, and, frankly, how non-saccharine it was compared to Carole King who was everybody's darling at the time. Funny how some things just click - and some don't.

Some "Greatest Hits" albums are not. Donovan's Epic Records "hits" album has re-recorded (inferior) recordings of his early hits, Catch the Wind, Universal Soldier, and Colours. Troubadour is missing some vital cuts, too. In later years, what Donovan/Epic did would become more common, as bands changed labels, rerecorded their big hits, to avoid paying the old label. Some groups, like the Animals, multiple "Best of " collections are necessary, because of label conflicts. Sometimes, great artists changed bands, opening new collections. Nick Lowe was in Brinsley Schwarz, Rockpile, and was a solo artist. Some of the bands you mentin, the Dave Clark Five, for instance, only put out singles, so hits packages make a lot of sense. In the CD age, it became easier to collect the "best" of artists, in the blizzard of CDs that were released, for a while. Quality was not always the best, and pirates abound in the "Best of" business!
