Artists, vendors lambast conditions at Portland's WasabiCon

Those who were at the annual anime and comic con said they were forced to run their booths in unacceptable conditions, which included holing up in a dirty parking garage.

I was a featured musician at Wasabi Con, and being in the basement was not something I have ever had to do, especially as a featured guest. It was so hot down there and wearing full Decora-Kei without being able to leave was difficult. I was the only one manning my merchandise booth so I was only able to leave and busk once a friend of the band stepped in. It was definitely not ideal and not a fun experience.

My sister was of the vendors and said that the air conditioning wasn't working and that it was like sitting in a heated, muggy box for 2 days. Not only that, the cost for a table was $240 but that was based on the fact that this convention was originally supposed to be 3 days. When the convention was changed to be 2 days, the cost stayed the same. I think they did at least allow people to pull out of the event for a full refund but no adjustment was offered. My sister decided to still go through with it because it sounded like this was a popular enough event that it would still be worth it. But that was before they decided to put Artist Alley in the dungeon. They were also told that there would be easy access to bathrooms from the garage and this was a lie. My dad went with my sister and he has bad knees. His choices were to either navigate a super steep ramp or wait 20-30 minutes for an elevator to the floor where the bathroom was. If all of that wasn't enough, the signage telling people where Artist Alley was located was minimal and the people who did stop by didn't stay long because of how hot it was in the garage. And Wasabi Con is offering these vendors a measley $60 refund for this nightmare they put them through! 😡

They ought to demand their money back. I mean, I've been going to cons for 40 years and I've _never_ been to one yet that was held in a parking-garage (despite their claims otherwise.) And convention-memberships aren't cheap, either; you pay good $$$ to go to one of these things for even one day. So when I hear the organizers decided at the last minute to hold this thing in a _parking garage_ of all places, it makes me more than a little suspicious. It makes me wonder just what the heck they did with the money. Surely they could've found a better venue than that. If all else fails, hold it in a high school gymnasium. (I've been to a number of cons like that.) I don't even want to think about the damage all that dirt, soot & grime did people's artwork & other collectibles...!
