Little Richard credits his own discovery to Sister Rosetta Tharpe, when in a 1945 show in Macon Georgia, she invited him up onstage. He called it “the best thing that ever happened to me.” For two decades before rock ‘n roll had even entered the public consciousness, Tharpe was essentially performing its sound on record and in tours across the US and Europe. Her gospel influenced, rhythm and blues sound in the 40s, became the sound of rock and roll in the fifties, crowning her the “Godmother of Rock ‘n Roll”
Sister Rosetta Tharpe was born Rosetta Nubin, in Cotton Plant, Arkansas on March 20, 1915. Both of her parents were musicians, although very little is known about her father (except that he was a singer.) Tharpe’s mother was active in music with the Church of God in Christ (a charismatic Christian denomination in which music was an integral element) and it was in this Gospel music setting, where Tharpe first began performing, at age 4. From a very young age, she started touring with her mother, singing in evangelical performance groups.
In the late 50’s Tharpe toured abroad, bringing blues and gospel music to Europe, including Britain…these tours would inspire many of the young “British Invasion” artists who would come to the US in the sixties. It was in 1957, where she was famously quoted in London’s Daily Mirror saying: “All this new stuff they call rock & roll, why I’ve been playing that for years now.” And she was right…Sister Rosetta Tharpe was the voice of rock and roll, before rock and roll was even in the larger public consciousness. And certainly before we started calling it that. She also stood out from the crowd for accompanying herself on guitar - and doing it really well. Her voice was undoubtedly a huge element of how she reached her audiences, but her guitar playing remains an integral part of her legacy and how she really earned her reputation as one of the foremothers of rock-n-roll.
Despite her successful career, she died in Philadelphia 1973 with little fanfare or notice. She was buried in a local cemetery, without even a headstone. And for many years, she faded from rock ‘n roll memory. But new efforts to understand the roots of this music have renewed interest in this remarkable artist. And her mark is undeniable; Tharpe was a huge influence on the nascent rock and roll landscape, and she is finally starting to get some of the recognition she so richly deserves. In 2007, She was Inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame, and in 2018, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

In 2015, my wife and I were road tripping across the States. One night in Memphis, while having a drink in Ernestine and Hazel's, a local man heard our British accents and introduced himself to us. He asked for the keys to the upstairs from the lady behind the bar and proceeded to show us around the upstairs. Ray Charles's room, tales of the Tropicana and segregated venues, and the fact we were in the room where Mick Jagger supposedly wrote Brown Sugar. He asked where we were headed, and we explained we were on the way to New Orleans the next day. He told us we were to drive through Mississippi the whole way, along with directions to stop at Charley Patton's grave, and the Little Zion Church, which he believed to be the true resting place of Robert Johnson. As if all this weren't enough, he took us across the road to the Lorraine Motel, now the Civil Rights museum. This was in April, just ahead of Martin Luther King day, and all the wreaths were fresh. He talked for an hour, giving us his own tour outside the museum, walking us back through Founders' Park (I know it's called something else but that's the closest I can remember). All the while talking of his life as a young boy growing up through the Civil Rights marches. He showed us a gallery on Main Street which had the picture of Elvis and BB together, and he told us where not to walk at night before parting company after a picture with us, and we donated a few dollars to buyhim a couple of bottles of Ghost River. We spent the rest of the night on Beale St. Thanks to Facebook, we stayed in touch, we talked a couple of times a year. He introduced me to Sister Rosetta in late 2015, and to my shame I couldn't believe I had never discovered her before! My friend, because even after only one night drinking together, that's what he became, moved to NOLA and was happily settled there, with his last post on Facebook trying to raise money for locals after the hurricane, as well as partaking in relief efforts himself and calling on others to do so. I wrote to wish him a happy birthday, and received a reply from his sister that he had passed away not ten days before. I shed tears for someone I'd only met once, but felt like a lifelong friend, because I had so hoped to meet him again one day. RIP Myron Jones, and thank you for introducing us to this titanic contributor to Rock N Roll

SO glad she's getting the attention and respect she deserves. I believe in a documentary on Buddy Holly it was mentioned that Buddy listened to a lot of black gospel music & that in influenced him. Her train station performance in the rain, singing 'Didn't it Rain, Children?' before a young British audience is incredible. She appears to have pretty openly flaunted some of the oppressive social conventions and those on race in the US as well - decades before those began to change. A towering figure in American music history!

About time actually. Heard of her years ago and was shocked how little recognition she got for her obvious contribution. Dare I say it also being a woman might have been a reason. Another pioneer was Buddy Guy who was so ahead of his time that fellow black blues artists didn’t want him on their records because he played fast and loud. Saw Buddy live in a small club, brilliant, but one bitter man, and probably for good reason. Clapton, Page and Hendrix all owe Guy. Great ep.

What really jumped out at me was the Decca Label 12:20 that read “Vocals with Guitar, Piano, Bass and Drums”. This was the sales pitch that identified the basic format of Rock N Roll. Remember, the dance band era wasn’t too far behind, but it was essentially over. The record label was clearly aligning itself with a new music phenomenon.

Elvis and Chuck Berry admitted being influenced by her too. She played lead guitar as well. I'm so glad they finally inducted her in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, posthumously, in 2018. I was so angry when, long ago, Ann Wislon of Heart said that "Rock and Roll has always been traditionally sung by men for women..." as if Heart was a new phenomenon. Not so much. Apparently, she didn't know Elvis, lLittle Richard and Chuck Berry were ripping Tharpe's sound, her's alone, and calling it their own. Shame!!! Tharpe was the Queen ... Long before there was a King!!

Thanks for the education Warren! She was barely a faint blip on my radar before watching this. I'd seen a few stray random videos of her before but didn't really get who or what she was. I'll have to do some more research. Especially would be cool (even though I'm a drummer) to hear more of her guitar playing. What was seen here was just a teaser! But enough to make me want to hear some more! Probably politically incorrect to say it like this but she sure was laying down some awesome chops for a woman. Never mind that she was basically creating and pioneering a whole new sound!

@@Killahead. Rosetta Tharpe’s records rose high on the race charts in America and influenced not only Elvis but other rockers including Jerry Lee Lewis and his hybrid of hillbilly, blues and gospel. As a recording artist she shocked her more pious black listeners with songs such as I Want A Tall Skinny Papa and delighted white listeners with Rock Me and This Train. Parallels can be drawn with Elvis physically and lyrically suggestive rendition of songs such as Shake, Rattle and Roll (in which he essentially used Big Joe Turner’s version rather than the softer lyric version sung by Bill Haley and the Comets), his rocking delivery of Jailhouse Rock and his mainstream ‘balladeering’ style on Love Me Tender.

Rosetta vehemently denied being a lesbian. The woman she was linked to was Marie Knight. Marie was interviewed for the only biography ever written about Rosetta. She said it was untrue and that many in Gospel music were petty and tried to damage competitions reputation. Tharpe was a Gospel singer and Christian speaker. She said her calling was to bring light to those in darkness. She traveled with her evangelist mother her entire career. Even in her nightclub years. I know when traced back all of the the queer Black woman stuff leads back to Gayle Wald's book. However, Wald admits neither woman admitted it, which makes it simply gossip. That statement should be removed totally, and at the very least Tharpe and Knight's denials should be noted and referenced. Rgtriplec (talk) 08:35, 27 May 2021 (UTC) I forgot to note the source used to support her being a lesbian in the article, quotes an article whose sources are a Blog with no sources, and Gayle Wald using unnamed sources. Again gossip. Rgtriplec (talk) 08:48, 27 May 2021 (UTC) Personal life A personal life section is needed. She was married three times, and dated other famous men. She was also involved in a few important court cases, cases that were covered in the media. She also close friendships with celebrities that are noteworthy. Also, there is no proof her third marriage was a sham or that she didn't know him. She had known him for ten years. When she toured with Lucky, the Inkspots were part of the tour. The man she married worked for them. Again this is Gayle Wald trying to make the story juicy, by creating a narrative that isn't factual. The fact she was married to the "sham" husband almost 30 years and is quoted as saying they never did anything apart. Proves it was a real relationship Rgtriplec (talk) 08:59, 27 May 2021 (UTC)

What on earth are you talking about? You are also contradicting yourself. Above you say it's anti christian and you also say it's Christians attacking her? Which is it? And what does any of this have to do with a video that is educating people on this great artist.
@GospelBluesMan

This was good to a point, but why do you spread unfounded gossip? Just baseless claims all from one woman with no verified sources. It is common practice to try an tarnish a successful Christian. Maybe it true and she was, but there is no evidence of that. Also who really care except it is unfair that she is being used by that movement when the claims are gossip. So lets stop the spread of gossip and stick to sharing backup facts about her music.
