She could combine Gospel , Jazz , Blues with a stellar voice and a guitar that wouldn't quit.

The perspective of this woman writer Gail Wall is absolutely awesome. I thought I was a Sister Rosetta expert but she is on a whole different level. I'm gonna buy this book as a x mas gift to all my musician friends. Sister Rosetta Tharpe is a musical genius and many don't even know her name. She sang with a Gospel and Blues voice but she played guitar like a rock n roller! She is the epitome of "cool"!

I agree with you 100% ---- Sister Rosetta started rock and roll! She's the Queen and the Mother of it all! Her guitar playing was so unique and so original that nobody had ever heard anything like it ever before. On top of that she sang with wonderful passion and intensity. People like Chuck Berry were totally inspired by her and so were many others.

I found out about her through some records that my brother had when I started listening to them I was blown away and I would always tell people she was the first rock and roller. Of course nobody knew who she was and would deny it As I got older I started watching videos they were popping up on KZbin and I can see her doing things that todays rock ‘n’ roll guitar players imitate I can go on for hours talking about this but point being this truly is the queen of rock ‘n’ roll without a doubt

You rarely see her looking at the fingerboard .. such a natural talent and like he said " a force of nature" She is my kind of player, going on intuition and laying it down hard. She transcends time in a way that only truly gifted musicians can. It is a down right dirty shame that Sister Rosetta Tharpe has no exposure like Leadbelly and others used to have. And that white SG .. Good God Almighty. We don't have a word for that.

I have known about this Lovely Time Machine Woman since I was 10 years old-am 75 now==I am especially Fond of Rosetta because we Share the Same Home Town of Cotton Plant, AR.. I Promote her History in Music everywhere I go. It is very Sad to me that so Many Black people Know Nothing about this Music Legend--the Grandmother of Rock and Roll and the Blues, should have also Included Gospel...VIP....

Thanks for your kind words about Sister Rosetta Tharpe. I was also from Cotton Plant. Unfortunately, I never heard of her until about 10 years ago when on a whim I decided to Google famous people from Cotton Plant and up she popped. I was blown away when I did my research and realized how talented, famous and influential she was. She was well before my time. But, it certainly made me proud to think that a black woman from "dark corner" made such a huge impact in the music industry!

'What was the biggest influence on the British and world-wide music scene in 1964?.... No, not the Beatles, but rather Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Big Mama Thornton, Willie Dixon and The American Folk Blues Festival concert series which toured annually in the UK in 1962! Soon to be stars such as Peter Green,Jimmy Page, all of Led Zeppelin,Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Eric Burden, Van Morrison, Rod Stewart, Jack Bruce, Steve Winwood, Keith Richards, all watched these performers when they came to the UK. Not to mention The Beatles themselves! Ringo, when asked by an American reporter what he would like to see in America? replied, " Muddy Waters" .

Just a Note, Elvis Loved Rosetta Tharp and Johnny Cash said that she was his Favorite Gospel Singer. Yes, Many Rock and Roll Artist Copied her Style but Race in my Opinion should not be Considered if Music/Singing is Good--during the 50-70's Many Black Music Entertainers were Enjoyed by White people and vise versa. I have talked with many Black people that Loved Elvis and Johnny Cash even tho he mostly sing Country. The 4 Tops, Little Richard, Fats Domino, the Supremes were greatly Enjoyed by White people. Sadly, I guess because i am much older, I despise Rapp Music but many young white kids love it...

Sister Rosetta was terrific, and I saw her perform in Liverpool UK 1964 BUT her importance in the development of rock & roll/rock music is being exaggerated. Chuck Berry and Scotty Moore were far more important guitar players, and Chuck was drawing mainly on T Bone Walker and Scotty on Merle Travis/Chet Atkins. Why Rosetta wasn't even the Queen of Gospel back then. That honour went to Mahalia Jackson. BTW, back in Liverpool UK, I had a little chat with Rosetta ( she was very exuberant ) and got her autograph.
