This is the third video on Erdnase. I talked to Richard Hatch, a magician and a magic historian who shared his story of finding the author of “The Expert at the Card Table”. He talked about arguments against various theories, walked me through his process of searching for Erdnase and shared his thoughts on why the question of the author’s identity is important and why history of magic matters.

I don’t know if this has EVER been said, maybe its a common thought or maybe I wasn’t paying attention. What if the reason the name “SW Erdnase” doesn’t show up on American Databases, is because Erdnase wasn’t American? He could have been Canadian?

No one knows who Erdnase was. No one knows if he was a card cheat or a magician. The book was self published, in 1902 and the reason Erdnase gave for doing the book was "he needed the money". My question that no one seems to want to answer is, if a person that said "he needed the money" and he published a book and could super manipulate cards with that kind of skill, in 1902, where their were saloons and card poker games were quite open at the time. And it would be easy to find a game - why would he need the money? If he needed the money, would he not just find a game and use his skill?

The problem is that you are making the strong *assumption* that "Erdnase" was telling the truth when he said, in his book, that he "needed the money" --- rather than in jest, 😆 or perhaps as a kind of decoy.
