I always feel bad for all these blizzard maps that never ever get used. Some poor group had to make all these, maybe even test them a bit to make sure they're decent, and then they never get touched. Out of all of them, I'd say that River Runs Through It has to be my favorite. In 4v4, it's a lot of fun, and I have a lot of good memories of it.

Arty and co are being really narrow-minded in trashing these maps. They were designed to be fun for casual players, not "balanced for professional BW e-sports" (which wasn't even a thing). It's 1998, ffs! The gameplay scenarios the devs had in mind were "I beat the campaign but still want more so I'm playing solo vs a few bots" or "we are 3 players of vastly different skill levels and 1 friend who's never touched the game playing over LAN". The first situation calls for variety in maps, the second - for maps where we can assign hard to defend bases to more experienced players, and better bases to noobs.

But yeah there are a lot of great ums out there. I used to play nothing but ums online, never really played serious 1v1's until SC2 came out.

I used to be king of FFA on US West back in the day. Honestly best way to win, build an army as your defense that way it’s mobile and expand as much as you can. Let people kill eachother off and you will have a ton of money in the bank and 200/200 once you notice someone is weak mess them up. Also air units is best, especially later in game and start upgrading to 3/3 as fast as you can. Also always pick Protoss because of mind control. HUGE advantage in FFA because of how efficient the class is
