I want a nice new vinyl print with some sleeve art from the photoshoot outtakes, maybe some B-Sides from Act II that never got released, and it’d be cool to have a lil livestream or some sort of small event for lil monsters. The managerial split and the era falling apart were blessings in many ways: ASIB, winning back the public bc of the comeback narrative and Chromatica doing as well as it could in COVID times... but I do wonder what would have happened if Artpop had smashed.

There were several companies that worked on Gaga’s team and on the app as well as being involved in behind the scenes that were in Gaga’s name but Troy carter was managing them. Part of the breakdown was while Gaga was finishing the album, a company with her name on it was sold by Troy without her knowledge. I don’t know more details but I remember her saying so in an interview. The initial promo schedule was scrapped because the label backed out once there wasn’t agreement between Gaga and Troy. He was a great manager but Gaga was just coming out of her hip injury and I think he pushed her too hard and wanted something too commercial for what she was actually creating.

Artpop really was ahead of its time. It was very rebellious. She didn’t stick to one look or one sound and there was no underlying theme to the era, she went with every look and every sound and at that time pop culture, specifically pop albums, were very formulaic, and when you broke that formula, not everyone agreed with it. That was the “issue” with Artpop, it didn’t follow the same formula pop albums “needed” to have during that time, and that’s why it caused such a divide between fans and critics.

She recently shared in GAGARADIO that Sexxx Dreams was her initial choice for the Lead Single. When the label heard Applause, they chose it as the lead instead. The Burqa demo leaked was proven to be leaked by her. It was an intentional tease to hype the album, but she seemed bias when it got radio/club play ahead of its official release. Although there’s much speculation on why her relationship with her previous manager fell apart, there were in fact shared stories that there was money involved. She had already dealt with a lawsuit related to the subject as well. This downfall started during the run on the BTW era when her then choreographer left her team. Many important figures left her team little by little, only the ones who understood her vision stayed. ARTPOP was ahead of its time and many things went against it. Still, it was a Gaga finest. The album itself shares a cohesive story when listened attentively.

Artpop is definitely my favorite album of hers. I never understood why it didn't do as well and that's why I'm watching this, but I think anyone who truly loves her work should love this. Regardless of the criticism she caught from collaborating with R. Kelly, that's probably my favorite song of hers. It's just crazy that you can't do anything without someone having something to say about it. I love all of Gaga's work with my only 2 critiques being that on 'Paper Gangster' the vocal production sounds garbled and attempts to make her sound like a different artist completely. And on 'Eh eh Nothing else I can say' she rhymes funny with funny. Which is forgivable. But people are always looking for something. Even her fans, which surprises me. I think she has done a good job of breaking out of the 'pop bubble' but also helping her fans do the same. By releasing not one but two jazz albums. Collaborating with artists like Beck and Josh Homme. Turning on listeners to other sounds. I think Miley Cyrus is also doing that with her fans. It's definitely courageous and I applaud them both.
@EljohnMacaranas2 жыл бұрын
Gaga is the perfect medium between keeping fans happy while challenging them and others. I genuinely think that’s her staying power as an artists. Her peers constantly either try too hard to make fans happy they end up stale or weird to the GP or try to stay relevant but end up pleasing no one. Seeing all the belated love for Artpop and seeing people who dislike Chromatica buy ball tickets… literal legend. Miley too, but I’d say Miley’s even more extreme. Dead Pets would have killed anyone else’s career but she’s still standing.

Great video. I’m surprised you did not mention the Muppet special she did during the Artpop cycle. It was my first definite sign that something was up with Gaga - aside from the Dope performance, which I still had not seen at the time. Gaga hits all the marks on the special, but just seems really distracted in general. It would be interesting to know where the taping of the special fit in on this timeline.
@EljohnMacaranas3 жыл бұрын
Oh, I recall that special. I do believe that was a holdover from Troy Carter’s old Artpop promo schedule which admittedly was unhealthily ambitious. Broadcast companies like Disney don’t take kindly to changed plans and Gaga’s incoming management likely saw this was smart way to rehab her image and get some families interested in the less avant-garde parts of the album.

This album was a very good album and underated. A relief, because i was so dissapointed by the ''Born this Way'' album. My favorites of this album was ''Venus'', ''Do What U Want'' (the Christina Aguilera version) ''Fashion'' (a fire bomb) and ''Dope'', the last was so much emotional. This album, like ''The Fame'' was timeless and very good and proof, it's was a good pleasure for the non fans of Lady Gaga like me. And i remember to the radios refused to playing in Canada ''Do What U Want'', because of the presence of ''R Kelly'' and received limited radio diffusions. It's was more after she released the version with Christina who i heard this song in the first time and was contribue of the impact of this song. The lyrics who Christina singing was originally the lyrics has Lady wanted of this song (a introspection of her injury in debut of year of 2013, who she canceled her last concerts of her ''Born This Way Tour'') before R. Kelly work in the song and made her song hugely sexual. I not like so much this version. She planned a music video, but because the video was so much sexual and also how R. Kelly and the director of the music video Terry Richardson faced with sexual abuse, the video was canceled. And she dropped this song in 2019 in the album after the released of the R. Kelly documentary ''Surviving R. Kelly'', who the victims of him talk about the manipulation lars he used for abused youngs womans and young boys also. The version with Christina continued to diffused in a single version in streaming. Christina was more appropriate about the context of this song (because she grew up with violence of her father, until six years old, who she have very limited contact with her father after the divorce) and how the abuse of her father affect so much her.

I agree with everything in this video. Gaga had a vision that didn’t have the commercial value and wasn’t fit for that time. I definitely think the main cause for the album flipping was the split between Gaga and her manager. If that split didn’t happen then the album would have been more complete and have more commercial value.
@EljohnMacaranas3 жыл бұрын
Not to like defend Troy (because the schedule he set for Gaga was ambitious and a little crazy) but I think management really is overlooked by stans. It’s these people’s jobs to take the artist’s vision and make it commercial. Even industry giants like Taylor and Beyonce (and Gaga ofc) have a team to take their ideas and make it something sellable. Gaga misplaced her faith in the public to “get” Artpop but I think with some additional work and time and cleaner messaging, she could have really sold it. Regardless, I like it for what it is and am glad there was justice for it even if we’re a little late.

I feel like ArtPop was Gaga’s Erotica by Madonna if that makes sense? It flopped massively with the public and deserved so much better!
@EljohnMacaranas Жыл бұрын
I'd say that's about right. Erotica was polarizing because it was avant garde much like Artpop was in the year 2013.

Yep, I agree that R Kelly’s version is not good. His lyrics doesn’t even fit the theme of the song (body image issues) and I hated that it got released as a single instead of Venus. As for Christina Aguilera duet version, it’s better than the original and it should be put it in the album re-release and streaming!!!
@EljohnMacaranas2 жыл бұрын
I hate R Kelly's version so much like back when the album dropped I knew it was going to age BAD. Venus was Gaga's choice for the single but because Applause didn't smash as hard as they thought it would, they changed it up at the last minute to chase what was selling the most on iTunes. It was derailed by her team and her chasing what clicked instead of sticking to the vision from day 1.

Jewels 'n Drugs is too overhated and underrated, it's not one of my favs on the album but it's far from her worst c'mon... the PRODUCTION is SICK, i just think 4 artists is a bit too much.... Also there are some parts of DWUW MV on YT and let's just say that the newspaper dress and scene could've been one of her most iconic looks EVER.

ARTPOP was doomed to fail for a multitude of reasons. The BTW era was very front-loaded, people were growing tired of her shenanigans (Alejandro video, the meat dress, Born This Way) and were prepared to invent reasons to cancel her (the trans rumours, fat shaming). The album was recorded in 2012 during the crest of the electro/dance pop craze - by 2013 people were starting to grow tired of every pop song being exclusively baked in that template. Then she broke her hip on the BTW Ball, Troy left her and went dark for months. It was a total shit show
@pipsqueak6773 жыл бұрын
this album was just released at a competitive time... Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus were at their peaks. Along with massive hits like Blurred Lines around. ARTPOP could have been a smash hit if it was released a little later in 2014

it wasnt Gaga's fault, it's INTERSCOPE.
@EljohnMacaranas4 жыл бұрын
It was a mix of everyone tbh: I always felt like Gaga overpromised this era, Troy Carter set up an ambitious schedule that clashed with Gaga’s vision, and Interscope seeing the chaos unfold pulled a lot of plugs after the managerial split. Interscope is actually very kind to Gaga. They repeatedly made efforts to let her do things her way both very early on and recently. They value her as an artist even allegedly sending her a horse as a gift for resigning to the label when her options expired. Interscope is likely the best label for her, I don’t see her thriving on Atlantic. Capitol is a disaster with Katy rn.
@wynignatius92894 жыл бұрын
@@EljohnMacaranas interscope and capitol handles some of the best artists in the world, but it has the same fair share of mishaps (mistreatments,not getting promos etc) and btw Katy perry will release her upcoming album SMILE and i hope her latest one wouldnt be a flop, just like WITNESS (no hate on it) and deserve to have decent promotions. Back to Gaga, well she did great with Chromatica bc since were on a verge of pandemic, her new material is really non-skippable. Plus, her concept was worth refreshing. hope for Chromatica to be the best era

About the part where you talked about Do What U Want and it's music video, I do think that if she released the mv it would have damaged her career a lot. I've seen clips and parts of the mv and I have to say it is pretty disturbing even for a Gaga video
@EljohnMacaranas3 жыл бұрын
The main reason it wasn’t released was the director, Terry Richardson, who also was meant to direct and film a movie about Taylor Swift’s Red Tour (also unreleased), he had allegations and investigations that went public in 2018 and remain open. The contents of that video would be a irremovable stain on her legacy as an artist. They made the right call (as did Taylor’s team with the doc/film.)

i think the fact that this era was forced to compete with miley,bey and especially katy’s albums was its downfall
@EljohnMacaranas3 жыл бұрын
it’s beyond just that tbh, Interscope had no other major artists at the time, they had the resources to push forward, the single choices made things far worse but also the promo strategy which lacked rhyme or reason (the transition from Applause to DWYW was abysmal bc she/team r didn’t know what to make single 2, Katy had already shifted from Roar to Unconditionally to Dark Horse by the time Gaga started promoting DWYW) bey came out of nowhere and miley ate oxygen (until after the album launched and it came time to tour)
