I work with pastels and appreciate the Rembrandts. Although they are considered more of a medium hard pastel. Note: Unlike a lot of other media, pastels are usually layered dark to light and not necessarily blended. Using watercolor paper is an option, but you get the best adhesion and number of layers with a sanded paper, or by applying a ground to the watercolor paper. However, using mixed media - some of the 'traditional' rules can get tossed out of the window. I got orange pastels, blue pencils and a gold pen. I don't usually do the challenges, but I might this time.

This is very helpful information. I feel like the black watercolor paper is more of a gimmick than carefully curated.

Dark to light with opaque mediums, transparent you work light to dark (water color)

@@lynn2551 lots of companies have been coming out with black watercolor paper. I bough some stonehenge paper and was super disappointed, it wasn't like watercolor paper at all, it looked and acted like an ingress paper (something like canson mi-teints). This van gogh paper looks like ingress paper too, would be nice to have seen some wet media on it.

Paletteful Packs March Box was 10 Rembrandt Pastels, a pack of tortillons, a pad of 24 sheets of pastel paper, 4 stabilo pastel pencils. A pencil sharpener designed for pastel pencils. Artsnacks, Van Gogh black watercolor paper 12 pages, Zebra mech pencil, 5 pack of Rembrandt pastels, artist chamois, 1 chalk pencil, 1 General's colored pencil So a less impressive copy of a competitor's box.

My kids got our first Artsnacks box this month. Now they're sad after watching this video because they would like to make the balloon dog, but Burnt Sienna pastels with a blue pencil and metallic purple pen do not make for a nice picture. Would have been nice to get blue, purple, or other color pastels. Burnt Sienna isn't very inspiring for this project.

I agree, this was also my first artsnacks box and I was disappointed that the pastels didn't match the chalk pencil or colored pencil. They weren't even complimentary colors. Very sad 😥

Well it would've been nice if my supplies from the plus box matched my original size box 😑 purple pink pastels, green colored pencil, green chalk pencil and blue metallic marker..... these weren't the easiest or most appealing colors to work together. My colored pencil and chalk pencil didnt even show up on the paper provided.

Amber Dulay I’m sorry you feel this way. You’re right, depending on the pastel color family you received it could have been challenging.

Amber Dulay totally fair point. To be perfectly transparent, we actually had supply chain issues due to Covid so we did the best we could given the circumstances.

I feel like this demonstration misses the point of the toned paper lol. Why not leave breaks in the shading for the paper to act as the darkest part of the object?

I definitely could have done that - but I had several darker shades of blue (from other supplies) to feature!
