Being a new student trying to learn from videos alone for the time being, one of the things I've done is to posterize (and desaturate) the selfies I took in various lighting conditions to study the planes of the head and face.

Thank you...very useful...I use 30min a day sessions...after my regular job....I will try more charcoals and blocking shadows techniques...I find gouache as quick medium to practice than oils ....now we get Carandache gouache tablets....easy to use.

Ha! I've had the same idea as in Tip5 a couple of days ago. For lack of a computer I work with my Cellphone, and I found it's necessary to lighten up the photograph first, to get the best posterized effect; (perhaps thats different on a computer)

Thank you for a short, informative and good video! :) I don't think I can do some of those things though, like not finishing and leaving things looking a bit... well, scrappy around the edges. I do that sometimes for sketches, but I don't call them fully finished artwork either. When I do fully finished artwork it's from edge to edge and as nice as I can get it. However, I really felt that the blocking in the darkest shadows first technique might be really helpful. So I'm gonna try that out, even if it'll be very weird I'm sure at the beginning since I usually work the other way round. XD On a side note, I love your English. :)
@PhilDaviesArtist
@PhilDaviesArtist 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Syster. Leaving the edges unfished is down to personal preference over style. Blocking in the shadows first is also a great way to improve the overall value composition of your drawing / painting too. Doesn't work for every medium (such as watercolours) but is great for charcoal, graphite and the opaque painting ediums.

I feel like the point about carbon pencils makes sense, but it would be completely negated by ABSOLUTE LOATHING of any and all smudges, which charcoal does in spades no matter what you do, I would just waste massive amounts of time trying to get smudges out of highlights.

When posterizing, what number do you recommend? I would guess 5 or 6 to correspond to the number of values normally used in drawing/painting?
@PhilDaviesArtist
@PhilDaviesArtist 6 жыл бұрын
Good question Gloria! I find it depends very much on the image you're working with. And there a few images (I haven't figured out why or what) that don't seem to posterise very well. Just play about with the setting and go with what works for that image

Phil , would you say that your background was more to do with Graphical / design - approaches to art work !?!. An unknown to me !!! So what background do you personally have in producing your works , basically ?!? I feel the viewers may benefit from this insight as it would discipline one in to choosing which way they were going to go ! for example is it -- Design , Graphic art , fine art etcetera , as all these choices have different emphasis on art production styles and so - overall focus , as you would know Phil . Thank you for the possibility of fulfilling this request as referred to here . So to be posted for example - possibly - on the You Tube Art Tutor site - somewhere , sometime soon as at 31/5/21 when this comment was added , hey !

For crying out loud, this cannot be taught. It is simply for the naturally gifted. He just wants you to sign up for his courses and give him money. The simple reason I'm giving up watching these stupid youtube videos, and giving up art in general. It is simply talent, why can't people except this???
