In this episode we see what digital sequencers looked like when they were a mere babe in arms... this is one of the first examples ever made available to the public :)

The Synthi AKS, released by Electronic Music Studios (EMS) in 1972, was one of the great sounds of early 70's synthesis. Modelled on the famous VCS3, it was an affordable, briefcase-sized synth that was capable of punching way above its weight. With several innovate design features, including a 256-event sequencer (unheard of at the time), it deserved more attention that it received.
This faithful emulation by Arturia is an absolute wonder.
In this video series we'll deconstruct the synth, component by component.
About me:
My name is Anthony Chisnall. I'm a musician & songwriter.
My channel is these things:
1. A place to share my songs - via various 'Back on Track' video series - in which you'll see each song idea evolve step-by-step, with me (hopefully!) improving my song-writing skills as we go.
2. An outlet for me to discuss all things musical - including technical break-downs of software and tools that I use, as well as more wide-ranging discussions of topics that interest me.
I play the guitar (electric, acoustic, and bass), and record all of my own synth-based sounds myself too, but I can't sing very well (huge understatement!), and so my wife, Pauline, who has a lovely singing voice, has come to my rescue. You'll hear her on all of my songs.
All of my music is written in Steinberg's Cubase.
I try very hard to make my videos PRACTICAL and no-nonsense - if I don't use a feature, I'm not going to waste your time trying to sound like an expert on it! This is the stuff I use day-to-day, so I think that's also what you'd like to hear me talking about.

thanks for the demo on Synthi. Had it a long time and thanks to you I can actually use it on songs rather than just as a toy occasionally. You're very clear and concise about things which is great for dimwits like me. ta

This synth is awesome and quite unique: a little bit of a mess user interface-wise. The ARP 2600 on the other hand is a model of clarity. I like them both.Thank you once more for the quality of your content, Anthony.

I wish I could! Sound replication is a skilled art, and not something I do much of, so I'd rather not pretend to be an expert and get caught out. He used quite a few different instruments on this album (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89quinoxe#Equipment), and I don't know which one would be best suited to that particular effect. It is absolutely gorgeous though.

one problem i found is that saving a user preset is not recalling the joystick position, do you know the reason? is it a bug or intentional?
@OneManAndHisSongs
@OneManAndHisSongs Ай бұрын
I just ran a quick test, and discovered that if you explicitly move the joystick before saving the preset it does recall that position when loading the preset back in. It appears that some presets don't have a specific joystick value when they are saved, in which case the joystick position is NOT updated when you load it.

Is there no portamento feature? Can't find it :(
@OneManAndHisSongs
@OneManAndHisSongs Жыл бұрын
No. The original synth didn't have a lag processor (which is how portamento works), but Arturia did add one to their Step Sequencer when they developed that add-on, so you do get portamento (called "Smooth") for sequences.
