Great idea to review this system again after a few months experience with it. I think I got one of the first units because I had problems with the rack link system. The holes for the screws were slightly off line and it made the whole thing quite wobbly. Anyway, Arturia were really interested in fixing it and in knowing exactly what the problem was, so they asked me to send plenty of photos and videos of the problem and of course they sent me a new rack system and the problem was solved. They were also nice enough to send me some free software for all the trouble I went to to explain the issue. That was nice. After a few months working with it, I really like the rack brute. I'll probably buy another 6U at some stage. It looks and feels great. I'm just not fully convinced that they've fully worked out the kinks with Rack Link system. The black rubbers on the legs of the stand tend to move out of position when you move the rack brute on the desk. And to be frank, after a few months its slightly wobbly again. It's like having a slightly wobbly table because one leg is ever so slightly shorter than the others, so you start putting pieces of cardboard under it to keep it from wobbling. It could be just an issue with my model. Maybe I've been unlucky. I also think they should move the power unit, not to the side, but to the back of the unit. When are Arturia going to start selling modules too? That might be cool. Nice video Bo!

Hey Bo! Great video again. I very nearly fell into the modular rabbit hole with the minibrute & 6u combo. As an absolute beginner who started with a minilogue and enjoys messing around with Volcas and Roland Boutiques this seemed like a good combo for a small space.

I started with the 3U Rackbrute, because I love its look and Arturia gear in general. But I soon found it to be too narrow with only 83hp (due to the power taking up 5hp). I returned it to the shop and bought a powered Make Noise skiff with 104hp. It‘s awesome. Compact and affordable. If you don‘t necessarily need the Arturia link system then I‘d definitely recommend the Make Noise skiff over the 3U Rackbrute. Later I expanded my setup with a 104hp 7U Intellijel case. It‘s not cheap, but very well built, light, very transportable and the extra 1U row is super practical for utility modules and other things. Also, the built in MIDI/USB and stereo in/out audio ports on the back connect directly to 1U modules which is, again, super practical.. Compared to the 6U Rackbrute you have quite a bit more space. And believe me, you‘ll most probably need it once you dive deeper into the modular sea. The Make Noise skiff sits perfectly in front of the Intellijel case, making for a very nice combo of 3x 104hp plus the extra 1U. Awesome! So if, like me, you plan to take your modules on the road a lot I‘d recommend any kind of suitcase rack over the Rackbrute. Tiptop Mantis cases are great if you‘re on a budget and they give you an extra 35hp over the Rackbrute for less money!

Custom made rack was the best way for me. They are very easy to make and you can purchase rails and power supplies separately from many companies. I have found Doepfer A-100 DIY Kit #1 to have the most powerful power supply 1200mA and comes with the rails and two socket boards that can handle 168HP of modules. NOTE: You will need to purchase a separate 5V adaptor for this kit. Doepfer also has on their website instructions and information on case sizes to help you get started on building your rack.

I'm starting to build a DIY Modular. Because of that I'm building my own case and I can just recommend building your own case, because it's much cheaper and you can have your own design. That is great when you want a custom case or a really special case. And my case without the power was like 20€ and if you buy eurorack rails I think you can expect a 6U ca. 100hp Case for like 70-100€ and I think that's really cheap and affordable!!

I made my own modular case too out of a vintage case I had. It was $120 for uZeus power supply and $80 for custom rails (6u x 74hp). I think it would have been cheaper if I built my own power supply system and cut the rails myself but I didn't have the tools or skills at that time

Both the 3Ux 88hp and 6Ux 176hp are both great options for beginners, esp at 259 and 359 respectively. However, I think with the 3U case, a beginner might be better off with a Make Noise powered skiff at 3Ux104hp for 250.00. Bus board connection is incredibly easy, Power is generous enough to hold up to 10 modules (10 16 pin connections on the board) I started with one of the Make Noise skiffs, and am awaiting a 2nd, with enough modules to fill both. I’ve been looking at a bigger powered case to continue to put new modules in, since I filled the 2 M.N. 3Ux104hp skiffs, and the 6U rack brute is definitely appealing, due to price, but I see something like the Tip Top Mantis powered case , at 6U x208hp, with Zeus power , various ways of standing it upright, at an angle, or laying flat, optional soft case, and cover sold for it, as a great option at 335.00. If the Rackbrute didn’t limit users to 176hp at the bigger 6U version, or 88hp at the 3U version, I could see it being perfect for a beginner (I would probably recommend a beginner going with 3Ux104hp , like the Make Noise Powered skiff, or one of the Intellijel Cases, which have in/out jacks, MIDI, USB in even their smaller 62hp cases, eliminating users from having to purchase in/out, or MIDI modules. IMO, the Intellijel 7Ux104hp , which has 2 3U x104hp rows, and 1U row for utilities modules, MIDI in/out/through, USB, in/outs, Buffered Mults, TPS80WMAX , capable of powering 28 modules w 3000 mA (+/-12v) and 1500 mA (+5v output) all in a case that can be closed while modules are patched, for 650.00 is one of the best cases you can get for the money, along with the Tip Top Mantis cases, which give 2 rows of 3U x104 hp for 335.00, while a lot of similar 208hp cases, like the Pittsburgh, or make Noise 7U case go past the 600 dollar mark, when I don’t see any reason to buy them, when there are more affordable options, cases that offer more for less. I know a few people who own the Rackbrute, one person uses it as his main rig, another is a very experienced modular user, bought one as a separate case, and his shared system as his main. At this point, with having over 208hp of modules, the Rackbrute isn’t as appealing to me as a Mantis, but I can definitely see it being a good starter case . I just wouldn’t go with the smaller 3U one, when the Make Noise powered skiff offers more hp for cheaper. I’m glad their are more companies offering options for Eurorack, though. It’s a win/win for everyone involved.

I have a moog subh and dfam. I have a drumbrute too. I am considering the rackbrute 6U with the possibility of attaching the rackbrute to the drumbrute. when not in use perhaps a possibility to fold away over the top of the drumbrute but, I do not see on the drumbrute the capability to have it attached to the rackbrute like you have here with the minibrute 2s. Are there side cheeks you can purchase for the drumbrute that can give the capability for connection to the drumbrute or do I reach for the drill? I intend the top tier for the moog subh and the bottom tier for the moog dfam. It should leave enough space to have perhaps a couple of modules that the drumbrute and dfam can use. One thing concerning is that the drumbrute has cv capability at the rear which would mean having to look around the back to validate the correct cv you want to run into additional modules. Thoughts???

Niftycase is a good contender in this space. They only make 3u 84hp, unfortunately. But they are metal with wood sides, solid *internal* power that doesn’t get in the way of modules, and have a (so-so but workable) built in usb/midi to CV gate as well as a line out. At $199 in US. Good deal. I have a couple of them i use for things like sequencing, just pop them right under or next to other racks. Name is a bit wack but the cases are nice for the money, & having an easy portable 84hp to drop wherever needed. Nice. .. wouldn’t really use them for my whole rig, though. Need that 6u or 9u imo

@@BoBeats well aware of the official measurement, but when I first filled the top row where the power module resides, I only had even hp modules, and the bottom had a 1hp space left over with no odd size ones. Maybe I'm lucky and won the extra hp lottery. Have you filled a row to see? I don't remember seeing a row full in the video. I know I've seen at least one other person mention the 89hp thing, I think on reddit. *edit* I think I found the answer while in the shower. I disagree with telling newbies to stay clear of Doepfer. Affordable, uses a rear mounted kettle lead connector, you can get creative with the cases and they can be scaled up easily. Yes the keyless headers carry an additional risk but if you're not being careful and double checking your connections then you're asking for trouble and this is something that newbies need to learn as well.

And guess what: One module I bought (not naming the brand here, but it was a bigger one) had the cable crimped the wrong way. So I plugged it in the wrong way. It didn't break the module fortunately, but it wouldn't have happened in the first place with a keyless header. So actually, I disagree with Murphy's Law here, if there is more than one way to do a thing and one or more of the other ways can lead to catastrophic results, then it's best to make the thing look as if it could lead to catastrophic results ;D

I've been at this for a couple of years. Both the cases I have bought are Doepfer, and probably 70% of the modules I have are also Doepfer. I've reorganised both cases many times. Most recently in the middle of the night after a few beers (not recommended). I've never plugged a power cable in the wrong way round. I always double check, so if I did, I would catch it, but it has never happened!. Doepfer stuff is great. superb build quality, great modules, great cases, very good prices, particularly on the used market. There are a lot of non Doepfer cases out there with questionable power supplies, or wall wart based supplies. I would say these are more problematic for a beginner due to potential problems with current requirements, noise and general compatibility. Anyone asking me for advice on what to buy as a beginner would be told get some new or used Doepfer - Doepfer case, and Doepfer modules.

I wouldn't say its a good start out case tbh, I wouldn't say it's a good option period (it's simply too expensive for what they give you space wise) you can get FAR more case for FAR less money the Arturia 6U is 359euro (176hp) I have a 9u x84hp (so 252 hp total) case that cost me $180 (that's including a tip top uZeus and rails) around 155 euro. (with the money saved that's a couple of modules for your starter system) there are a lot of people on ebay making and selling cheap euro cases. (sure they are just plywood but they get the job done at a bargain price) there are TONS of better options for people starting out who want to keep initial costs down. for example. www.twisted-head.com/product/eurorack-cases-modular-systems/ (a case from these guys with the same hp count as the 6u rackbrute only costs £90 (around 100 euro) buy a uZeus for 75 euro and you have the exact same funcionality (space) as the rackbrute for less than half the price. All you REALLY need is a wooden box with some rails fitted (if you are even remotely handy with a saw you could build the doepfer cases in an hour for a few dollars in materials) I've made a small 84hp 3U skiff case from foamcore... yes you did read that right (it's basically made of cardboard :) to bring my system up to 12U total, which works perfectly well as a stopgap (it was really just meant to be the prototype that I would later build in plywood but the foamcore is sturdy enough that there is no need) pbs.twimg.com/media/DiaVh8xW4AA41s9.jpg:large (total cost of materials and rails .... around 35 bucks) ($32 of that is the rails) I didn't even bother painting the 9u plywood case (which would make it look a LOT better) but I really don't care what it looks like, as long as it safely holds my modules that's all that matters to me. with the arturia you are paying $100 for the space you're getting and $270 for the look/ build quality (at the end of the day its just a wooden box, how good does build quality have to be?) over priced , over engineered euro cases should not be a reason to Bar people from entry. (hell even a tip top happy ending kit with NO case is enough to get started safely) with the rackbrute you've spent nearly 400 euro and you haven't even bought a module yet A lot of people are gonna think "meh i can buy a whole synth for that" it seems to me than anybody manufacturing euro cases thinks of a price and doubles it (just because it's eurorack and it's "meant" to be expensive) they are basically selling you a minibrute with no synth included for 400 euro :)

ok but what if A: you get one second hand vastly cutting the price down and B: you want to attach it to a minibrute

@@MCVessels yeah the past 7 months have fairly radically changed my perspective on this. I'm now looking into. 9u 106 hp portable case on Etsy thats only £100 more than the rackbrute
