I’m actually tired of the “rock revival” movement that is having mainstream rappers and pop stars do a “rock” album and then go back to whatever they did before. That’s not a revival, it’s a trend. Last time I checked that’s not how you bring a genre back to life.
@theseth4554 жыл бұрын
I’m in several pop punk Facebook groups and I feel like a lot of the people there are just forcing themselves to like the MGK album all because it could “bring it back to the mainstream” and not for the actual music itself. They also can’t handle criticism of the album for that same reason. I would love to see pop punk return to the mainstream, but I pretty much agree with Jon that TTMD isn’t that great of an album for similar reasons he pointed out. Sorry MGK pop-punkers.

@@theseth455 It just bothers me (a little too much tbh) that he is getting a ton of credit for reviving an entire genre of music, when he actually hasn’t done anything beneficial for the current scene. I was so disappointed with Notes On A Conditional Form when it came out. Almost from day one, when Matty started hyping the record up, talking about how it was going to be a "return to form" and a "callback to the Music For Cars EP days", I was super excited, being that that era, from the EPs to the self-titled album, is my favorite from the band. However, when they started putting out singles like Jesus Christ 2005, which, granted, I actually thought was an alright track- and Frail State Of Mind, I started having my doubts about the validity of those claims. There was some hope when If You're Too Shy came out, but out of the entire run of singles, that's the only song that I could say genuinely stood out to me, and I still think it's the best song on the full album, and easily stands amongst some of the best songs the band has ever made. But it also stands amongst some of the worst on Notes. The word I would use to describe the album as a whole is "confusing". It's bloated, disjointed, and just feels...strange to me. It doesn't feel or sound like The 1975 most times. All that being said, though, they're still my favorite band, and I'm genuinely excited to see what's coming with Drive Like I Do.

I really enjoyed this list honestly, besides the Notes placement, if Changes wasn’t right before it I wouldn’t have thought twice about it, but since this basically means you think Notes is worse than Changes... I honestly can’t agree to no extent. Yeah the album was a bloated pretentious mess but it had some REALLY good highlights in my pov, Too Shy, People, Frail State Of Mind, I Think There’s Something You Should Know etc. while Changes didn’t have ANY highlights and it just sounded like boring, bland and extremely forgettable music. That was honestly my only complaint about this (and well, I kinda like Tickets To My Downfall but I understand why many people don’t) Also you know AJR didn’t release an album when it isn’t on Jon’s Worst Albums list

I honestly think the only reason Jon hates NOACF is because he's an album guy. Sure it was disappointing, but as you said there were multiple standout tracks, including 2 that ended up on Jon's year end lists. I'm not an album listener, so I liked it because I could just listen to People and Too Shy 40 times and ignore some of the mediocre songs.

Notes on a Conditional Form would have to be the worst one for me, because of the HUGE disapointment factor. They're one of my favorite bands and when People released it got me so so excited for the album. There's a few great songs on it but that's off of 22 TRACKS that I don't even really remember because I never bothered to go back to the whole thing. Father Of All was soo disapointing too however I still enjoy a good handful of the tracks for what they are at least. That's too bad about the wrecks though, I haven't listened to the album but they were really fun live when I saw them as an opening band so even if I don't listen to them a lot I always want to root for them.

lp1 was so disappointing to me because liam DOES have vocal talent and because he DID write in 1d but he just refused to actually sing or write or say anything post band. for that reason, its my number 1 changes is my easy number 2 and gaslighter by the chicks is my easy number 3. this album sounded like they wanted to make a pop album to be edgy and different and special. march march is the cringiest political song of the year to me.. and the empty pandering of country artists changing their names to support the black community felt so stupid to me. also natalie maines' voice was made for country... this overproduced pop crap doesn't work AT ALL

That The 1975 album was such a disappointment to me. I am a huge fan of theirs, and although I miss their older stuff, they have been one of the few bands who still retain a good sound while sounding different with each album. Until... Notes On A Conditional Form. The guys can do all the experimental stuff they want, but this... this ain’t it. Half the album is just random instrumentals. At least we got some good actual songs on it, but it was overall so disappointing.

I think high off life is a mid album for future, and has a few good songs on it, but pales in comparison to the 50 minutes of fire that was HNDRXX. I think it is a respectable placement in the dishonorable mentions category, but I have listened to a LOT worse like Harverd dropout and T-Wayne.

My bottom 20 are (I'm including EPs): 20. *Kehlani- It Was Good Until It Wasn't* except for the Jhene Aiko collab, everything felt uninspired and generic. 19. *Hailee Steinfeld- Half Written Story* when the "best" track in an EP is the most bland piano ballad, it probably means something. 18. *Kelsea Ballerini- kelsea* omg can these pop artists stop calling themselves country? The album was the most bland "country" record and it's not even a country record. 17. *Echosmith- Lonely Generation* honestly it's just unnecessary. This album doesn't bring anything to the table, let alone new things. 16. *Yaeji- What We Drew* I actually had a lot of expectations for this, as I liked her past material, but I really don't get how the vocal performances manage to be this bad, especially after she showed us what she is capable of in Charli XCX's February 2017. The production was mediocre. 15. *Drake Bell- The Lost Album* this album was just embarrassing to listen to. I cringed at way too many points and lyrics. 14. *Lennon Stella- Three. Two. One.* she is just another edgy pop girl who does nothing differently than the other people who fall under the same category. At least she tried to do some things a bit differently, but everytime she just failed. Songs like Golf On TV shouldn't have made it outside the writing room. 13. *Ava Max- Heaven And Hell* a lot of people are defending this album saying "music is allowed to be just fun" but pop albums that did just that, like Confetti by Little Mix and Future Nostalgia by Dua Lipa did a better job at that. Too many songs sound the exact same, and except Salt (which was just fine, and in no way amazing), nothing is interesting. (yes, I dislike Kings & Queens as well) 12. *Sam Smith- Love Goes* the terrible tracklisting of this album just turned the album, which is already bad, worse. All the "bops" on the album are dry and energy-less, and all the ballads are incredibly boring. 11. *BENEE- hey u x* God, I hate her voice. Some tracks are almost produced well, but ruined by one element of the composition, her lyrics are... I honestly don't know how to explain them, and even Grimes couldn't save it. 10. *BTS- BE* every time they sing in English, a poet dies. Every single English lyric is terrible, production is always stale, and the group's dynamic just doesn't work for an album like this. 9. *Tate McRae- all the things i never said* this is trying so hard to be depressed and edgy, and it just doesn't work. Even though I get the message of "all my friends are fake", I always die inside every time she actually says its title in the song. Her voice is kind of annoying, and the production is very basic. 8. *Justin Bieber- Changes* every thing I have to say about this album has already been said before, so I don't feel like describing it:) 7. *Lauv- how i'm feeling* it's wayyyyyyy too long. It's an hour and a half of complete bland and boring music. When Sofia Reyes came on I screamed because the album got interesting, even though it was a very generic verse. That's how desperate I was for ANYTHING a bit different from this album. 6. *Disclosure- ENERGY* while not boring, the overall sound of this album just isn't good. All the songs they (are they a band? A producer? I have no idea) decided to promote this album with are very different than the rest of it, and the album is over produced whenever it doesn't need to be, and under produced whenever it needs more. 5. *Lauren Cimorelli- Orange + Blue* the first half of this (orange) is by far worse than the second (the rap verse on "running" made me choke), the second half is still HORRIBLE. She is known to be a part of the Cimorelli group, that harmonizes well with each other and have beautiful voices, and yet, the vocal performances and vocal production on this album are horrendous. I was never a big fan of Cimorelli, but her vocals are shockingly bad. 4. *Green Day- Father of all...* it falls under the same category as "Changes". 3. *Wallows- Remote* the only way I can describe this album is annoying. The production and overall sound is so bad that I don't know how to explain it. 2. *Poppy- Music To Scream To* I loved "I Disagree" and looked forward to this, but it turned out to be just a pile of annoying sounds and random silence. The intro is solid though. 1. *Olivia O'Brien- The Results Of My Poor Judgement* it's just 3 songs, and each one of them is a solid contender for worst song of the year. Her vocals, writing and production are all... Bad. Sad Together is the most premature and under-worked song of the year, Was It All In My Head is the single most generic song I've ever heard. I actually predicted the entire chorus because it was way too predictable. Even if you have never heard the song, you practically did if you ever listened to a song with a guitar in it. And Josslyn is just... Upsetting. The story of the song is so bitchy and misdirected that listening to it makes you mad at her. The lyrics are so cringey that my cheeks hurt, vocals are, yep, terrible, and production is lame. After finishing listening to it for the first time, I felt insulted by how bad it is.

10. Meh tbh I didn’t mind this one. I even liked My Ex’s Best Friend quite a bit. I’m not as deep into alt/pop punk as Jon is besides a lot of what I grew up with so a lot of the cliches and tropes didn’t bother me that much. I also like MGK’s singing voice wayyyy more than his rap voice so that was kind of a silver lining. 9. Didn’t listen to it 😂😂 not really sorry 8. Also didn’t listen to it, but more because FFDP isn’t my cup of tea 7. HA! How the hell does this exist? Body Like A Backroad haunted my small country town radio stations for so long before I left for college and to this day it still disgusts me. I only listened to the album once and I hate that I still remember quite a bit of the details...just gross 6. Yikes...Yummy should’ve been a sign for times to come in 2020. I have nothing to say. This album is the same song on repeat for nearly an hour. Yawn. 5. Never cared for Liam as much as Harry obviously or hell even Zayn. The only thing I remember from this album was the gross lyric about doing anal in a parking lot. And I’m a little ashamed at how much I used to bump Strip That Down my junior year of high school. 4. Okay so this is a tricky one honestly. So me and my roommate are pretty decent 1975 fans and because of that we definitely acknowledge that this is their worst album to date...however because of how experimental it feels for the group we were able to give it kind of a pass. Like it’s their worst album, but we never really saw it as a bad album. Idk it’s probably more for sentimental reasons. I personally never took the writing on this project that seriously as if Matty was actually saying any of it from a place of sincerity. if he were, that’d be scary 3. Didn’t listen 😂 2. Ugh....this one disappointed me. Don’t roast me too hard but I came out of high school still enjoying blackbear quite a bit. He’s no lyrical miracle or anything but I always had fun listening to his project “Deadroses” and to this day “digital druglord” can put me in my feels and I am not ashamed of that. However, After ANONYMOUS came out I kinda realized where he was starting to head and it didn’t look great. It was boring, it was bloated, and it had some of his worst singing to date. So tbh I was holding out for a hero in the form of his next project. I honestly like hot girl bummer 😂😂😂 as much as I know Jon would hate to see that. But the singles kept getting more forgettable and disposable as time went on. Blackbear was everywhere this year with his feature game and the only one I enjoyed was his remix on brakence’s “dropout.” But oh my god...this album is a void. All filler no killer. A quick buck. A cash grab. I think bear has potential. He does have talent somewhere. But man the absolute CHEESE on this thing from “queen of broken hearts” squeaky chorus vocals, to the cliche guitar closer that I can’t even remember the name of as I type this. Yikes man 1. Annnnd didn’t listen. Never liked the black eyed peas. And not in the same way as Theory or Death Punch. Just an utter disgust towards their artistic endeavors.

Regarding Green Day's dishonorable mention, it should say something about the quality when the band doesn't play ANY of the songs from it on the Hella Mega Tour that was intended to support it. The band knows this. It was just a way to get out of their contract with Reprise. It also took me some time to come to the conclusion that it is their worst album. There's just nothing that really stands out on it. I recently listened to it again for the first time in over a year and had already forgotten like half the tracks. I used to think Uno was their worst album, but it at least has some redeeming qualities with tracks like Nuclear Family, Carpe Diem, and Let Yourself Go.
