In 2001, Supreme court banned ragging across India. During my college days it was totally banned in Guwahati. I thought ragging was stopped. Those who are involved should be immediately punished.

Ragging was worse before. The seniors would enjoy ragging the juniors and they had fun troubling the juniors. Back then, the juniors wouldn't complain and mind them. But these days ragging is much less. But still ragging is not a good thing. Ragging should be stopped.

I think the repoter had never been to school, maybe he buyed the post he is now in. if he had been in school he should have known that no school authorities permits such illegal activities and allow intoxication.... Moreover as an ex jnvian i will state a few words on behalf of teachers and principal. More than any others school staffs they are the one who gives their best wither its about teaching or caring .they spend most of their time looking and care taking of the students , they are not to b blame much. It is only the students. Ragging is an evil act and those involved in disrupting the peaceful atmosphere of an institution should be dealt seriously. If the juniors ever were involved in consuming tobacco etc. their complaint should have been given to the concerned authority rather than taking into their own hands.

Not gonna lie, everybody who stayed in hostel has faced ragging or witnessed ragging one way or other no matter how trivial the ragging was. It is so normalised in hostels specially seniors to their juniors to show a sense of superiority or seniority. Be it making their juniors wash their clothes, taking their stuffs they fancy by force or in worse case scenarios physical violence like THIS. I remember one major incident like this that happened recently got media coverage and i was discussing about that incident with my friend and he was like “ye sab toh hostel me hota hi hain, humlogka saath bhi hua hi tha bas yahin ki yehlog zyada mardia aur baccha hospital pohonchgya, yesab toh kuch nahin hain”…mind you the kid that was injured succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. That’s how normalised this stuff is.

I myself being an ex Navodayan give ultimate support to the seniors. Kids these days are beyond control and in my experience it wasnt the teachers but the seniors that was responsible for the order in the school system. Non tribal teachers have always failed in controlling and managing the juniors in fear of repurcussions. Cannot blame them. But the senior system was what brought order in the school. Once this convention broke, the school lost its prestige. Though, the beating here is a bit extreme but justified. Parents should thank these seniors as they are doing what they should have done. I myslef being a victim of one such abuse, but wont call it a ragging rather we were deserving. 😅

​@@Teen8232 I guess you are triggered. I said I was being a victim of one such abuse and the thrashing I got was justified. If a senior ever beat me to prevent me from doing some bad things, I might not be appreciate it at that point of time, but in future I would definitely have thank them. We have acceded to the western narrative of abuse so much that our young ones are taking it lightly nd abusing it to cloud their accountability. Again, ive said that the beatings were too extreme and could have been prevented if the school administration were resposible enough. But I guess you havent been to a residential school to understand the ground reality. My school lost its prestige and the fame once the senior system ended because the teachers (non tribals) failed to manage the tribal childrens.

@theaspirant2620 The fact that the school authorities leave the junior ones at the mercy and watchful eyes of the senior is so disturbing. Parents send their kids to school in the hope that they are bring cared of and looked after by the faculties and not these seniors; please note that they are kids (senior) themselves and no proper indepth understanding on what is actually right & ethical and what is not. Infact its not even these seniors role to look after their juniors. This is totally lackadaisical attitude of the school faculties. They are to blame for everything. The seniors attitude as well as the junior victims sorrow. It is the school authorities that must be taught a good lesson.

@@omo-xs4ec facts brother. School authorities are the ones to be blamed. If the administration was strong such incidents would have been prevented. School authorities and parents need to work hand in hand to keep an update on the activities of the children and their regular assessment. Much of the non tribal teachers dont initiate action in fear of repurcussions and the parents need to acknowledge this. I guess a committee of parents and school authority where regular exchange of information takes place to build trust and strengthen the administration should be set up. This would ensure parenting along with schooling to the children and regular meetups would enable parents to keep a track of their childs activities.
