Interviewer did a superb job at presenting arguments against Arundhati's Position and Roy went on a tangent but not quite addressing them rather evading them. IMO, it exposes the shallowness of her arguments.....coz she could not counter them. I guess she won't be proud of this interview. More importantly, kya Ambush kiya bhai...Ghazab....first presenting facts with which she agrees and then turning it around to show things have improved and she picks selectively...GENIUS level

What is most important about her observations? Mothers and fathers around the world demand we administer our governments so as to nurture them and their children. Arundhati Roy will no doubt face enemies and friends around the world. Whatever the case may be, she is a friend of the people of India and mankind when she points past the smoke and mirrors to our sacred task of faithfully nurturing this enchanted dust as best we can for all the creatures it has spawned. The future of this planet is enriched by our diversity. She does not bring shame but honour to the fine reputation and history of this great nation of India which we need as a balm to mankind. Do not fall prey to the expedience of the faithless all over the world who would embrace the devil himself if necessary to preserve a fake narrative they falsely see as protecting their privilege. Who said the only devils are the ones running around in our own hearts and minds? May I add that these devils have no power that we do not give to them. There is no excuse for mankind not taking the high road forward. The future of this planet will be a nurturing one by definition. Let's stop wasting time on negatives and get on with the wonderful and doable task of turning this world into a more nurturing and compassionate and caring place for us and our children and our children's children. Obviously if we allow capitalism to become no more than an unregulated greed licensed to damage our symbiotic earth we commit a great abomination of a crime greater than genocide because it is suicidal. We fail as a type 1 civilization to nurture in a coherent way, that which is the property of all life in this enchanted dust including ourselves. I think Ron Paul called that property rights. People who understand a Capitalist democracy understand a mechanism by means of which we can progress towards such a coherent type 1 civilisation. I keep on having a chuckle at the expense of the fear mongers and the war mongers and their fake fear and enmity narratives that they churn out for their masters. LOL The funny thing is that this faked reality belies the good news we can know with confidence; The world has never been more poised to transition to a more coherent world order. This will not be through coercion but through co-operation and honest scholarly planning based on scientific consensus and good faith. If good people are empowered by good laws to profit and protect, then we turn greed into nurturing without changing a law anywhere on earth. The only law we need is the one that is of no value if it is not written in our hearts where it immediately casts out the fake demons from their only refuge. LOL and that law is to love one another, and maybe learn form the anti-intuitive wisdom of loving your enemies into friends, if for no other reason than that it is the most effective strategy to ensure an end to the reign of unbridled destructive alien parasite that is generic to Mammon or unregulated unaccountable greed as was so abominably demonstrated on 911. All the nations lamented the wound of the beast because it is a mortal wound. A self inflicted wound. A wound only cleansed by the lance of transparency that would finger powerful traitors. The ultimate treason to poison and kill the soul of your country to protect the power and privilege of a few sick Psychos who are a greater threat to us all than the synthetic terrorists printed with ink and paper. Tyranny could not have crafted a more sinister attire. I think that Russian general had it right when he pointed out that the Global Mafia end up running our affairs if we are not holding our executives accountable through transparency and truthfulness in all things. The transparent rule of law is our greatest ally in running a secure and safe administration everywhere. Those who seek secrecy usually have something to hide from their own people as well as their often fake enemies. In that regard, the aggregate safety and security is not served without transparency .

Indians don't like Arundhati Roy. As much as I dislike the BBC's hypocrisy, in this case, it is Ms.Roy that is using her fame to spread her communist ideology at the cost of Indian culture. It is funny how it is actually Arundhati's Western supporters that always use the caste system to justify racism against Indians and are the most patronizing. As always, Roy is not someone who is popular at all in India. For once, the journalist gave her the treatment she deserves instead of chear leading her slander and deliberate misinformation against Indian people and culture.

Well not a follower of Gandhi but Gandhi also said " The slavery of caste system is worst than colonialism".......... I don't know about other ventures of Gandhi, but Arundhati is definitely misinterpreting the Gandhi's quote that Caste system was hindu genius.....Because at that point he was referring to the times when it was a division of labor and not a rigid system as it is today..... Many a times when I listen to Arundhati I find her right about many facts but quiet often many of them are misinterpreted and often some exagerrated........Sometimes her dichotomy of thoughts are also quite obivous............

True, because the problem exists but the solution must be found and thought about critically. Communism is not good and will never be good but to think critically of both communism and capitalism is not a crime. The point is their must be a critical mind set of both ideologies. We can not accept capitalism because communism is bad nor accept communism because capitalism is bad there are nuances to both arguments, but just like we created the ideology of capitalism or communism their must be a way to create a system that works for everybody or at least for or at least the vast majority of people around the world.

Everything she says is subjective without much factual backing. when questioned about facts, most of her answers start with 'if you see'. She has made her life and career out of speaking ill about her own in every global platform she has been while praising its undemocratic neighbours. She is communist intellectual who sees india as an oppessor. She wud be very happy to see india disintegrate into 300 princely state. She cannot bear the fact that India is being taken seriously in global geopolitics. She has been this way in any government, she spoke agains india during congress time also. She suffers from some childhood psychological trauma as her parents were separated and she may have faced some social problems in a conservative malyali neighbourhood where she was raised by her single mother. She blames the INDIA for that trauma, thats the core nature of socialism, they manage to blame anything for their problems. Com on Arundhati, grow the fuck up, we all have faced problems in childhood, some were bullied, some faced corporal punishment, some were abused.... DON'T BLAME THE INIDAN STATE FOR THAT.

Of course muckrsh ambani is a trader caste , meaning they are the natural enterpreneurs following their ancestors trade. Children of enterpreneurs would naturally be business savvy. Mukesh ambani's father started a successful business despite the corrupt government officials who are forever putting up barriers for startups in India, unlike the west. Of course there are several struggling businessmen from the so called trader caste who never make it big and are barely surviving. Mukesh ambani's father was just lucky. I am sure he had to work very hard in the beginning and probably had to bribe officials to do the job that they should be doing in the first place. Once you get over the first big hurdles, it generally becomes easier to expand your business, in India.

You keep throwing the word “statistics”. I think you fail to see a bigger picture at times. Problems are so big, it’s easy to criticise. Help out instead of holding talks. Let’s see some real input. Things are getting better, but it takes time. Also there is always a price to pay. China does not have equal education. Go talk to some people instead of sitting in an easy chair and reading statistics. Statistics are not reality. They’re interpretations can also be skewed. You have discredited all the efforts people are actually pitting in, while reaping the benefits of sympathetic eyeballs the media channels provide you. Also it’s a bit weird that she smiles after mentioning some really grim moments in history. (You see how criticism doesn’t help in any way) PS. I like to contrast between Ayn Rand and Mrs.Roy. Stark, extreme in their own way. So much drama, leading to nothing at all.

I would like Arundhati Roy to talk in terms of solutions , there is a no point staying in the most exclusive area of Delhi - the diplomatic enclave - and then highlighting the plight of the poor in India, just highlights her hypocrisy ! Reopening old wounds of caste indicates her deep hatred for the Indian State and "Hindu" India. It is very true that India has some dark chapters when it comes to caste and appalling oppression of Dalits . So have the Hindus, in general suffered under Islamic rule. The question is, do we keep raking up history and old wounds or look at ways of moving forward as a nation ! The fact of the matter is that successive Indian Governments have failed everybody not just the Dalits, Tribals and other vulnerable minorities. Despite Dalit parties, Leftist & Communist holding power in many states for long years, the lot of the Dalits and the poor in those states still remain shocking ! Why does not A Roy question and scrutinize this , instead of raving & ranting against the Upper Castes only ??

Notice 3:53, when the anchor said "In 2006, some agency said that 48% of indian children under 5 are stunted", Arundhati is suddenly excited and agreed saying "Yes!". She is always happy and ready to agree on all the negative things about India. But when anchor proceeds to tell that things have improved remarkably since then, she doesn't trust these numbers anymore..... Such a hypocrite...

I think the problem with Roy is not that she criticizes capitalism, but that she blames India far too much when much of the blame lies in Western countries, particularly the US which has come to replace Britain as the new colonial master of India. It's true that the Indian government works side-by-side with the US and US private companies, but the criticism of India's government should always be paired with criticism of the US and European countries that continue to exploit the Indian people.

Varna which is wrongly described as caste system is actually a division of labour and would be correctly described as class.ie working class(the lower rungs of society) , business class ( traders or enterpreneurs ), administrators and the ruling class called Kshatriyas and academics and priests(the Brahmins) It was a brilliant system during those times because there was no formal schooling for the general public and children learnt skills from their father. Nobody could steal away another's job, ie, even a king ,when he died, would have to be cremated by the class that does cremation.thus there was job security for all. There was no DIY, one had to go to a particular class to get a particular job done.

There were schools and universities like Nalanda and Taxila in Buddhist India which was egalitarian and progressive society..Varna system was not brilliant, it was a tool to keep the shudras or working class people under the control of Brahmin, kshytriyas and vasishyas..after the decline of Buddhism in India, the regressive Varna system was enforced on the shudras

I don't know but what I think is going on in India is something similiar to what happenned in China during den xiaoping's revolution and in Russia during Stalin's regime.....Old cultural world pf peasants and farmers coming to terms with modernity and city life.....But India gets a bad name as always because there is inertia in western thoughts about India...because its always been negative...I am a dalit and my motherland gives me so much that I am proud of it....there are many struggles going on and I am not saying India is perfect....But IT WILL be third largest economy no matter what......I feel racim in western world against Indians more worrying as compared to Casteism against Indians inside India because at least we do have positive discrimination laws to fight against them but in West u just have to bear it....Sad but True :(

The rape rate and gun killing rate in US is around 10 times that of India. India has one of the lowest gun ownership rates. Rapes happen all across the world. but rate of crimes in india is much lower. Look at Detroit, chicago, Berlin, Sweden, London, Bradford, -- Gun deaths, Rapes, Child grooming, are so prevalent. Arundhati roy is nothing more than a Champagne swilling, limousine liberal. She randomly rants and carries this self certified badge of intellectual which sounds hollow as time passed. She has no solutions. Is Socialism or marxism the solution? We already have examples of Soviet Union etc. China is not a communist economy, it is a capitalist economy with commie political system. Is China Prefect.

The Western nations have a growing population of poor and homeless, we have food banks here now. Why would the caste ruled, corrupt and bribery culture of India allow the Indian poor to be better off under Capitalism? We have some Government help here in the UK and still people struggle. I hate to imagine what the 800 million Indian poor must suffer. India will be looted by the U.S. for its resources, it will be a second Raj and only the few elite will benefit and the masses will suffer. Big corporations from the U.S. are already using up the vital water supplies to make soft drink and taking a chunk of the film industry. All of the profits will move abroad and the Indian economy will be bled dry. The country is also going through a female genocide. These NGOs are to blame.

The hair stylist hates you Roy. BBC guys make fun of themselves at every possible juncture. Love the composure despite odd hair do. Indians like most of the poor world (consequentially under organized world), alike three fourths of our global cousins, suffer too many grave injustices. Capitalism in India is still archaic, may be the blunders and crises of the advanced capitalist societies can help us to define a more sensitive capitalism. Ill's of capitalism ar one end, at another end being under organized and under motivated adds to our big suffering.

She talks as if before 1991 there were no poor people. If Capitalism failed, then what is the answer? Socialism? I thought that was what existed before, so how did that work out for the poor or India in general. Although people like Mukesh Ambani are just gross, economics cannot simply be viewed from a poor man's prism. The poor will always exist even if there was an utopian egalitarian society. The larger question is, why do we give a pass to the unabated population increase? The same misdirected focus on the symptoms on the issue of Global Warming, rather than the real cause. If humans didn't exist in such vast numbers, there would be little effect due to Carbon emissions. We want to seemingly control the growth of every other species, so that this selfish species can just multiply and consume whatever little resources that exist. When would Indians stop fucking? That's the bigger question!!!

Ms. Roy! You are good at writing fiction. You know little or care to learn how to use statistics to find the change in the economic condition of people. It appears you are a dreamer without knowing what is scientifically possible. If you were not a well-known fiction writer no one will care what you say. Better stick to your profession rather than spreading the false statistics that Indian poor have not benefitted. You seem to empathize with the terrorists and not with the entrepreneurs who take a risk and create jobs. You have no knowledge of politics nor the history and make statements which are outlandish and false. Poverty has been reduced. It can not be reduced by communist ways. Communism failed miserably;y. Even China had to follow the capitalism. And do you know China has reduced poverty significantly. But it is 50 years ahead because the leaders there have been able to use undemocratic means to employ the capitalistic methods of creating jobs. That can not be done in India since we have democracy. It allows people like you to object any change which does not suit the communist philosophy and economic model. Your free speech is harmful to you as well as to the nation. The pen is mightier than sword only if used appropriately. But if the sword is used to cut nails in fingers or a hair in the neck it can cut the fingers and also the neck. Likewise, your misuse of the pen can be harmful to the nation. Your free speech is toxic because it is false and spreading the falsehood can create riots. Please use your time wisely writing fiction. Th reality is different and is not fiction. Politics and governance are not fiction and your advice is misguided. to the semi-illiterate masses.
