First tip in an active shooter situation for a non-LEO observer should be to move to a position that offers cover and/or concealment for you to better observe what is happening and to determine your best possible options for/path of safe retreat. As Jeff points out - do not visually present your firearm while taking this action. I respectfully disagree with using a “concealed carry” badge. The fact that you are in possession of a LEO-type badge device is prima facie evidence of either a pre-incident willingness to engage in violence under a self-assumed mantle of some legal/moral justification, or a legislatively prohibited action of “preventing” violence by leading others to believe that you are a duly appointed LEO (i.e impersonating an officer). After, and only after, you are forced to deploy deadly force to prevent the death or serious physical harm to an innocent, and you have verified that the immediate threat has ended, should you kick (yes with your foot) any assailant’s weapons out-of-reach, re-holster your own weapon, and move to a tactically superior position of safety (i.e. back against a wall) as you continue to monitor the situation. A “hands-up with fingers open and spread” orientation would likely be a great idea as you await the arrival of LEO and other first responders. Invest money you might have spent on a “vigilante” badge on cell phone technology that will allow you to hands-free dial 911 and describe yourself to dispatchers while asking for police and emergency medical response. Don’t voluntarily engage in transforming yourself to assume an “active shooter” role (yes, that’s what LEOs become when they discharge their weapons as a sworn duty) unless there is absolutely no other reasonable alternative to preserve innocent life from imminent harm.

Excellent advice. And as I have commented before, any bozo can buy any badge they want, it proves nothing.

The badge idea is a good one. Many years ago there was a few states (including the one I was in at the time) that issued a "Concealed Carry" Badge with your permit to carry and it had your CCW Permit number stamped on it in the space at the bottom. I have used this a few times in situations you describe. As long as you don't pretend to be law enforcement or claim to be a LEO there is no law disallowing these badges and if a LEO happens upon you and sees the badge it immediately puts him at ease (in most cases). If I am in an area or outside open carrying I will sometimes put my badge on my belt also. I was stopped one night while fishing and had my outer shirt off and had my badge on my belt and the officer walked up to me and asked what outfit I worked for. I removed the badge and showed it to him and he had never seen one and thought it was a great idea. Most criminals would not dare wear a badge of any kind so a LEO is going to be less excited or anxious about coming across someone with a gun and a badge. I think some states don't allow a CCW badge so you will have to check the laws in your own state. Here in Virginia they are good.

Good points. One quibble: if you refer to another video, especially if you put the thumbnail in the present video, please provide a link to the earlier video. You might have done that in the original KZbin video. KZbin sometimes puts links within the video or just outside its frame. If that is the case and it wasn't visible, my apologies.

Thanks @James Carroll for the heads up! It worked on our end, but I'll take your advice. Should work now. Here's the link anyways kzbin.info/www/bejne/rWOpk3lsqrNnfK8

Not far from my neck of the woods. This is an exact scenario that we have worked through in my CHP training. And you learn the responding officer was not at fault. People to not understand (non gun folk) the challenge and serious responsibility of being a daily concealed carrying citizen.

So true Kyle Riggins! It's definitely worthwhile discussion among LEO, who get much more training on this topic because the past can be such a teaching point for police and instituted in training. However, for CCW holders, it seems like the "happy ending" story is all that ever plays in our minds. Learning from stories like this is important in order to understand the realistic dynamics and dangers of a deadly force incident. Best to map out ALL of the threats up front and insert these potentials into your training now in order to be prepared, eh? Thanks for sharing your experience and input Kyle! Much appreciated!

I really can’t criticize having a form of CC identification. Here in NJ…we can’t carry…period. That’s it…game over. So in the extreme where a person may acquire a weapon from either a downed officer or by subduing a criminal..who has a gun…you have NO way to identify yourself. We are basically sitting ducks with EVERYTHING rigged basically against us. But…this is my home. Good video and very informative

I believe that ordering anyone to drop a gun, toss a gun or officers kicking guns is wrong. First of there is the concern over safety an an accidental firing could happen. It is always better to have the suspect move away from the weapon and then an officer can pickup and secure the weapon. This would be safer and it also protects evidence. Second, if you're a good person, it would not be very nice to have a cop kick your firearm and have it slide across rough pavement and get damaged. It's like an officer tearing open your back pocket to get your wallet. It's just not necessary. And since many times, innocent people are detained and questioned and even searched, this is important. Also with a barricaded, hidden shooter I think the important issue to take cover and get people out of danger. If you can not see and return fire to neutralize the shooter then the focus should be on safety and providing testimony to the police. While someone is waiting for their chance to engage, more and more people may be shot.

Damn, sounds like you're screwed either way if you happen to be unfortunate enough to ever be in or near an active shooter situation. I'd worry more about being gunned down by a nervous or trigger happy cop than I would by an active shooter. Sounds like your best option to survive would be to just leave the scene if possible rather than pull your CC and engage. There are countries that don't have active shooter situations nor trigger happy government thugs running around, and that's where I am headed as soon as I can get the arrangements made.

Evidently you have not seen the aerial view, since it shows he was to far away to have the AR 15 in his possession. Also witness statements only heard two volleys of gunfire. If Hurley had the AR in his hand we would see it on the pole camera, we will never see that video.

More food for thought. I saw this video, crooks can see it too. Will a bad guy try to find & use a badge? Bet they will try to obtain a real LE badge if they can, so the solution of having a badge will not fly. As long as there are bad people, there will be risks..

@@user-cs3hi8zp7p And that means Mass events aren't as important to talk about??? So what are you talking about, you overly excited, jumping to conclusion, conservacant? What are YOU upset about? I didn't say "take the guns". I'm not saying we should put restrictions. So what problem do you have with my statement. Didn't know we had mass sta-bbing in America. Wow such an issue. M@ss shoo-tings happen alot and they are a huge issue, because innocent people get gunned down! "Mrdr happens all the time with other weapns tho" And?! Thanks for putting out what we already know and adding NOTHING to the table! Hey we should ignore that you could go to school and get shot! Let's ignore the issue and do nothing, because "mrdr is a normal part of life". Get outta here. You make Conservatives look bad.

I do not advocate of having a concealed weapon badge. Too many legal pitfalls. Lawyers will twist it into a legal argument that you were premeditating and looking for a shooting to happen. All other advice is good. Most law enforcement will be responding in vehicles with lights and sirens. Thus giving ample warning. Be ready for an offduty officer in play clothes to respond. The advise here is sound. I just dont agree with the badge part. This is a hard decision. The badge could be a positive tactical way of slowing things down to help identify one as a good guy. But can and will be twisted by shameless and overzealous prosecutors and greedy civil litigation lawyers.
