@John Erengbam it's not me saying that it's the genetic study. If you read genetics you will know about genotype and phenotype. Genotype means your actual genetic constituent and phenotype means what you look like ( which gene inside you is dominant and expressed itself apart from this linkage and recombination also play a role). I am north indian and in my own family i have seen two siblings one being pale and one being darker but it doesn't mean they are different race. Paleness of skin is a recent evolution because of sun( how close you leave near equator)and food habit ( grain based or meat based). Before the popularisation of Agriculture even European were on darker side of complexion. And i never deny India being a cosmopolitan country, with mixture of different human races due to invasion.Majority of invasion took place in North but they mixed with locals in these thousands year. Hence majority of Indian people are GENETICALLY more similar to each other rather than being similar to German. And about the white and caucasoid looking north indian ( people from punjab, j.k , H.P) they look more similar to Persian, Afgani and Greek rather than looking like German ( 6 feet tall, blue eyes and blond hair). My English is not great but i study anthropology hope i cleared your point.

In ancient India Avarnas(Dalits and Adivasis) and most of the castes of Shudras(Backward Castes) were not even allowed to live in urban areas. Urban areas were mostly an enclave of upper caste Hindus. And most of the converts to Islam during Muslim rule were upper castes Hindus. This also explains the high proportion of Muslims in urban areas (especially in North India) and also most of the Muslims being fair in colour. Even in independent India till late 1980s urban areas had mostly upper castes Hindus or Muslims. The proportion of backward castes, Dalits and Adivasis was very very less(as compared to their actual population).
