Appreciate the honesty. I know beekeepers that " never lose one" because they lie and you'll never see inside one of their hives. Me? About half die every winter. Rebuild then do it again. What a ride

Interesting to see this! Hard work to keep em buzzing in the cold weather. I subscribed. I recently got into bees, wild bees and other flying insects to learn more about them. By coincidence I found your channel! Gonna be fun to see the upcoming season. What a massive bee hives in terms of numbers. Even tho its winter there are still a lot of bees in those hives. Doing a great job! I am sure once it warms up they are gonna thrive!

It has been a rough long winter for the bees. mine came back from CA hungry and weak. they are eating pollen like mad, and trying to grow. its just hard to see them struggle, and all I can do is feed and wait. glad your not under water, or putting them back in the shed

I did a deep dive on my hive this afternoon (I only have one!) and was very pleased to see how the girls have pulled through the winter. I moved the mostly empty lower brood chamber deep up to the top, and laid out some extra pollen patty for them. We'll see how they do! The good news was that in the upper deep, there were 3+ full frames of capped brood, so in the next week or two, we'll see a big boost in hive population!

Your new patties seem so simple to deploy Ian. Also, the bees seem rather contented with these new patties. Considering the materials and equipment, along with the time invested your own patty operation, do these new style patties effectively free up your time for other tasks, as well as lessen the expense of the prior patty making process? -Bob...

I had a couple toddies and a fine cigar with the hounds on the floor, fire in the box, bee vides on the jukebox, and a snow storm outside the other night. It was actually kind of pleasant to give up for a night. I didn't dare blade or blow the snow the next morning, the ground is too soft. Our weather person referred to the season as 'a dishonest spring' this morning, I had to agree. Before you know it, we'll be cursing the heat and will have forgotten all about this crappy weather. Maybe.

Hey Ian - if you are using the single-sided reflectix as inner covers why don’t you put the reflective side down to reflect that radiant heat back onto your clusters? Less work for the bees to stay warm. The reflective side up doesn’t provide you any benefit…unless I’m missing something!
@ke6gwf
@ke6gwf Жыл бұрын
It may not condense as much moisture that way? Just thinking lol
@jpinier
@jpinier Жыл бұрын
@@ke6gwf if anything, the reflective side down would help with condensation bc the R value of the reflective side is higher than that of the white side. I have double-sided reflectix so it’s never been a question I’ve had to ask myself…
@ke6gwf
@ke6gwf Жыл бұрын
@@jpinier my thought is that since the reflective side is more insulating, if it is up, then the air in the bubbles will absorb more heat, thus reducing the temperature differential with the air in the hive, and thus reducing condensation. If the foil is down, then the trapped air will be colder since it's exposed to the outside temperature, and the surface MAY be colder, since the foil reflects heat away, while the bubbles would absorb it. Again, just thinking out loud, I could be totally wrong, but explaining my thought process lol
