1:02- Kinda love that they kinda jab at the audience of Mikado, which is capitalizing on Asian art fad of 19th century but as a jab at British society.

It's a line that rings true even today as well.

It could also be a subtle callback to Gilbert & Sullivan’s _Patience_ , which was a huge piss-take at pretentious, snobby artists who thought the old days were more cultured, and it also took a few jabs at the Japanomania of the time. (“I don’t long for all one sees that’s Japanese”)

I saw one where instead of '...banjo serenader...' the line went "There's the orchestra conductor who just now has lost his place [score cascades off the stand and into the viola section], and the noisy tympanist [fort-fortissimo tim-shot with pedal slur], I've got them on my list..." "There's that nisi prius nuisance that just now is all the rage, the televangelist PRAISE JAYZUS! [clears throat] I've got him on my list..."

Ko-Ko. As some day it may happen that a victim must be found, I’ve got a little list - I’ve got a little list Of society offenders who might well be underground, And who never would be missed - who never would be missed! There’s the pestilential nuisances who write for autographs - All people who have flabby hands and irritating laughs - All children who are up in dates, and floor you with ’em flat - All persons who in shaking hands, shake hands with you like that - And all third persons who on spoiling tête-á-têtes insist - They’d none of ’em be missed - they’d none of ’em be missed! Chorus. He’s got ’em on the list - he’s got ’em on the list; And they’ll none of ’em be missed - they’ll none of ’em be missed. Ko-Ko. There’s the banjo serenader, and the others of his race, And the piano-organist - I’ve got him on the list! And the people who eat peppermint and puff it in your face, They never would be missed - they never would be missed! Then the idiot who praises, with enthusiastic tone, All centuries but this, and every country but his own; And the lady from the provinces, who dresses like a guy, And who “doesn’t think she dances, but would rather like to try”; And that singular anomaly, the lady novelist - I don’t think she’d be missed - I’m sure she’d not he missed! Chorus. He’s got her on the list - he’s got her on the list; And I don’t think she’ll be missed - I’m sure she’ll not be missed! bab-lawyer Ko-Ko. And that Nisi Prius nuisance, who just now is rather rife, The judicial humorist - I’ve got him on the list! All funny fellows, comic men, and clowns of private life - They’d none of ’em be missed - they’d none of ’em be missed. And apologetic statesmen of a compromising kind, Such as - What d’ye call him - Thing’em-bob, and likewise - Never-mind, And ‘St- ‘st- ‘st- and What’s-his-name, and also You-know-who - The task of filling up the blanks I’d rather leave to you. But it really doesn’t matter whom you put upon the list, For they’d none of ’em be missed - they’d none of ’em be missed! Chorus. You may put ’em on the list - you may put ’em on the list; And they’ll none of ’em be missed - they’ll none of ’em be missed

John Reed features elsewhere on YoiTube in an extract from the BBC radio show "Desert Island Discs". His choice of music managed to avoid any particular G&S item and instead settled for the po-pourri to be found in "Pineapple Poll" - an adroit decision that avoided having to make such an impossible choice.

This is delightful! A real joy! John Reed did a lovely job as Koko, but to be fair the Martyn Green Koko shouldn't be forgotten. And there's a version done on T.V. back in the late 1950s/ early 60s by of all people Groucho Marx! I bet the late John Inman would have been a fun Koko too.😀

John Reed WAS the quintessential G&S baritone - splendid! I saw a production of this in Houston in the mid '80s . . . all VE-RY Modern and Up-to-Date . . . by the English National Opera! The Great Spaghetti God only knows why, but they saw fit to give Katisha an airplane pilot, who mooned (would the Brits say "swanned"?) about on stage . . . and when at the end She was handed over to Koko, the pilot "plunged himself into the billowy wave . . ." - and not a moment too soon, IMHO!!

besides wonderful in appearance and sound, its staggering that you could merge convincingly the two performances together (were they "almost that close" in their beginning?) A question about some older audio where the highs are simply not strong - can one using aural exciter or digital equivalent, spice up the overtones to give feel of a more modern recording? FWIW Audacity has a Harmonic Enhancer plug in allowing even or odd overtone manipulation.

Also entire list was "new things that are annoying to creators" (older renditions had things that are obsolete or normalized, so newer ones try to do television shows or internet). Like Blackface being "low-brow" even by for Gilbert and Sullivan era (for good reason).

to anybody who thinks this is Insensitive to Asians and the Japanese for a start this Operetta is well over 100 years old and in the last 10 years for the first time in history Gilbert and Sullivan 's the Mikado was perfumed in japan after being censored/withheld by the British and American Powers for fear of offending the Japanese bc of there hiveish devotion to the Emperor. And what do you know the Japanese think the Mikado is incredibly funny ! The Japanese revere the Emperor and traditional culture but they as a culture and people have grown up and learned to laugh at themselves sometimes which is why the Mikado has seen recent popularity in Japan in recent years.

Is the opera title somehow backwards? Mikado seems to mean: the honourable gate. A guy I once knew said he liked to eat asian food & that he always had felt connected to the far east in a mysterious way that could not be explained by the environment he dwelled in (which was different). Ko-Ko in the opera didn´t kill anyone & wasn´t a killer type. Maybe he just liked to observe & carp.

"Dates" refers to calendar dates, and the lyric itself refers to history students who know about a lot of historical events and flaunt off their knowledge by reciting precise details such as the dates on which they happened, and other minor matters
