58:58 Maya why do you find it strange to choose Vasilisa and Maxim but not Khavronina and David? These two duos have a very small difference in points both in the Grand Prix stages (in which both duos won silver with very similar points) and in the national championship, which unfortunately was due to a mistake in an element that cost them 4 points. Vasilisa and Maxim have been together for barely 1 year and 2 months and they are already competing against the most experienced and winning couples. They broke into the famous "tail" in figure skating, nobody can believe it, each competition they become stronger and at an incredible speed. I hope that being the daughter of influential people like Khavronina is not the reason why they would choose them over these two.. also, her father is military

I think Kaganovskaya/ Nekrasov are great. She's the kind of girl you love in ice dance and Maxim is tall and elegant. Yes, the teenage spark she had with Angelopol is lost but Maxim Nekrasov is a great skater. Even if Angelopol didn't have behavior issues he was already struggling to lift Vasilisa. After that he was paired with Shinkarenko he left her too, she got tall for him, Angelopol is not an option anymore, Vasilisa's body changed and they don't match anymore(he had his boots modified since he was with Vasilisa, his heels are higher than normal skates).I don't get why Maya would chose Chirizano over Vasilisa and Maxim.

The ISU has never been an organization that has actively created stars in the sport. Yuzuru Hanyu’s rise to fame was a result of specific circumstances, the only other example I can think of the same magnitude is Sonja Henie’s success in the 1930s which was also influenced by unique circumstances. These athletes were exceptional, but their greatness was not solely due to their skill in the sport. The ISU has never learned nor desired to create one superstar in figure skating and there is no indication they will start doing so now. Figure skating requires athletes who possess winning streaks, a strong personality, a certain “it” factor, as well as favorable circumstances. While these elements have been present in figure skating throughout its history, they have not always been combined at the same time. GOE and skating skills are what make figure skating “artistic” and enjoyable to watch, but they are also challenging to explain and can be biased. No one would read the rules or watch the ISU videos to understand how the sport is graded. Figure skating cannot change this aspect because it is an integral part of it. Entertainment in figure skating primarily comes from the choreography and the athlete’s ability to express themselves, which can create likable stars but also make the sport repetitive and stale. To add insult to injury casual fans often overlook the athleticism involved in figure skating “believing” it does not take much to achieve success “it’s just some spins and some jumps” which no one can differentiate. At this point, figure skating fans should be grateful that we still have a sport to watch. Drama may sell in the short term, but it is not sustainable. Champions come and go and no one cares, not even skating fans. There is no attachment.

To be honest it's just a nightmare all that's missing is a caliper to measure the length of the nose to meet the standards of the "great race" and to give striped uniform to neutral athletes. It's kind of humiliating. Noone athlete deserves to be discriminated. Such an attitude does not promote sporting principles and does not work for unification but on the contrary provides a field for separation and disruption of the main precepts of the Olympic Charter. Many commentators suggest that Elisabetta Tuktamysheva should go. but what about the sporting principle who won the internal qualifying tournament.All these discussions are about anything but not about sport.

Playing devil's advocate, Russia needs to be more worried about sending people with integrity more than medaling at the Olympics or they may never be back the way they want to. Liza is the spokesperson they need. Better for her to go and get top 5-8 than send an unknown jumping bean to win and cause more hard feelings.

Liza, 5-8? More like top 3. Mishin got Plushenko in shape to compete in Vancouver in one year and Plushenko had bad knees. I'm sure he could easily do the same for Liza who is in better shape and is far more disciplined. Or at least I hope so!

The rule about association with skaters with open doping case was introduced in summer olympics for neutral russian athletes - with the same wording. So it's not specific rule against Tutberidze - i.e. there shouldn't be special intent to prevent her or her pupils from participating. That, and the rule particularily uses word "serving" - not "served" or "will be serving". Which can mean not association only when this athlete serving the punishment - not before it begins. Which is quite logical btw - because coincides with standart WADA rules. Else it would mean losing any sense in disqualification term as a notion - because it would lost it's temporal meaning. In that case it should be renamed to "banning for good" instead of "disqualification", right?

Banning Russian athletes from international competitions seems like an overly simplistic and counterproductive solution. It’s reminiscent of the misguided efforts to imprison Trump - both are actions that feel more about political theater than addressing real issues. The whole debate about ‘neutral status’ for Russian athletes only reinforces Putin’s narrative that Russia is unfairly isolated and victimized by the world.

For Russia, gold medal in men's singles and ice dance is impossible whoever they send. For pairs, Russia can send even the most random pair that nobody has ever heard, and they will still win anyway 😅 The women's singles is a bit more tricky. Dave has a point about Petrosian. She seems like a safe option but this season was her peak, she will never get better than this and it's only downfall from here. Akatyeva seemed like a safe option too up until 2023, and now she is a hot mess. Just like what happened to Valieva, Khromykh, Usacheva, Kostornaia, Trusova, Shcherbakova, Zagitova, Medvedeva and Lipnitskaya. Team Tutberidze students are not able to win anything once they are past 18 years old, their bodies cannot handle harsh trainings and difficult jumps after that point

Dear Dave, if it was for me, it would be Eliza Tuktamysheva to be sent to Milano, BUT: As much as the audiences liked her, the judges hated her. I remember her doing clean 3A`s with a bracket entry where she got +1 GOE Maximum, where she should have gotten +3 at least. She was heavily critizised for her slow spins, her outfits and her lack of elegance. Even with a clean performance she got hardly ever more than low 8`s in skating skills. The russian federation knows this very well. So, I think that S. Muravieva or Petrosian will get the spot. BTW: I don`t think the russian federation will send a woman who is not able to jump at least a clean 3A or a Quad.
@savanahbabyyyy2 күн бұрын
Sofia Muravieva can't jump clean forget a 3A. She lost her 3A. They will never send her. They'd send Anna with no quad or 3A or Alina with 4S instead

@@savanahbabyyyyI don't think they would send Alina Gorbacheva, considering the scandal she got involved by running away from her allegedly abusive coach. I always liked her, Unfortunately, I was not able to follow competitions in russia as much as I would have liked to here in Austria, because it is very hard for me to get informations via youtube; it is the only channel that is available for me. Sure, they get a semi propaganda point in saying “Oh they need us” but given Russia’s current economic crisis and internal turbulence I doubt this would have a huge effect on the war especially with the decline of the sport’s popularity. It feels worth it so that some young skaters who aren’t extremely politically can still get a cater despite the choices of their countries leaders. It feels like a good compromise to me.
