This is actually pretty darn good! Dude can really sing. I'm digging his voice. Plus Penny is one fine looking woman. Very pretty. Their acting is really good. The fact it was live really blows my mind.

Rosemary Prinz and Mark Rydell brought such intelligence, class, and sensitivity to their respective roles of Penny and Jeff. A beautifully written scene. The musicality of their romance was the precursor to music being associated with other supercouples like LOL's Tess and Bill, DOOL's Julie and Doug, and Y&R's Leslie and Lance.

“Penny” was so underused after this era...Would have loved to have seen her as a main character through the years.

She's an icon! Saw her today happily humming at the bus stop on my corner. She looks amazing!

Remember, all the soaps were done Live at this time, so Mark Rydell (Jeff) is playing and singing on live TV -- no retakes. And as he finishes playing, the show's organist picks up the melody and continues playing it in the background. It's all very romantic and moving. Compared to the improved production values that would come to the soaps later, this seems very simple and quaint. And yet, it has an emotional impact that today's soaps can't come close to capturing.

One of my fondest memories of my grandmother was sitting close to her and watching As the World Turns. I must have been 7 at the time. Penny was favorite. Thank's for the memory.

Watching this clip brings back so many memories. My mom talked about Jeff and Penny years after their storylines ended. Can't believe the show has been cancelled and that Helen Wagner died in the same month.

Scenes like this is why ATWT was number one and was the most loved of all soaps. The beloved tragic Penny and scheming bitch Lisa were riveting television. Sadly we will never see the likes of this again.

I wonder if this was set not long before the end for Jeff. This type of scene is what you get when someone is about to be killed off and you want the audience to remember the best. It's beautifully done, especially the look on Penny's face.

@ChipL9554 жыл бұрын
@@marcelparker6755 So did Penny's second husband, Neil Wade. If I recall correctly, both crashes happened as a result of bad weather and slippery roads. Penny's father, Chris, had to tell her that Neil had died. They showed him going upstairs at the Hughes house to tell her, but they didn't show him actually conveying the news. Instead, they showed the Hughes living room, where probably Nancy, Bob and Grandpa Hughes were waiting. Suddenly, Penny comes running down the stairs, screaming, "I hate storms! I hate storms!" and ran out the front door. I'll never forget it.

Right from the start, World Turns was the story of people & the people they loved. Penny and Jeff were victims of influences. “What happens to them happens to so many of us who are subject to the many influences. But as long as there is a springtime and a harvest, as long as the earth turns, nothing is futile.”- Irna Phillips.

@staytunedfor How P&G could be so pathetic and not have Penny at her mothers funeral is beyond me. Rosemary Prinz was on the first ATWT episode, and should have been on the last.

WOW. Thanks for this. Was Jeff a musician? I didn't know they did dissolves during the live broadcasts like this. What a poignant scene, a far cry from the "romance" written today.

I so wish that Penny had been given some much needed happiness in her life with a good husband like Jeff or even Neil before killing them off. I guess she finally did find happiness years later with a race car driver. By that time, Penny had been pretty much written off.

To be fair, Mark Rydell (Jeff) had a rewarding career as an award winning director after he left the show. Bill Bell even said it himself in an interview.
