Melanie was by far my favorite Emily!!! Surprised she was only on the show for 3 years - I watched every single day back then. Loved the friendship between Andy and Paul, preferred Andy because he was Kim's son but the dynamic between Paul, Barbara and James was one of the great high points of the show. All 3 of these worked when Douglas Marland was the headwriter, and he was the greatest! Loved this reunion!

I had a crush on Paul and when he got together with Emily, I was jealous like everyone else. How can anyone compete with her? She was beautiful, older, and experienced. I didn't watch ATWT much after that time period, but I can only imagine it would be hard for Paul to not compare every other girl with the gorgeous Emily (Melanie Smith). I have always loved Ming Na especially in the Joy Luck Club and Mulan. What an amazing career and now involved in Star Wars. She's still gorgeous. ❤

How fun! When I saw this first advertised I got goosebumps because I started watching when Ming was cast as Lien. I loved her storylines and how all the Hughes’ welcomed Lien. Doug Marland was so good as head writer that I was immediately hooked on all the stories. I loved when Lien’s Vietnam Vet history teacher started giving her grief because she was from Vietnam. I loved when Andy’s drinking led to him crashing his car into Lien’s. Late ‘80’s ATWT was the best and then it started to meander and I stopped watching. Sad about Michael Loudon passing away as Duke but appreciated Ming knowing that. Would’ve loved Ming’s recollections of being with two Margo’s...when Hillary B Smith was leaving and Ellen Dolan arriving. Thank you Alan, this was great.

Melanie Smith!!! My absolute favorite Emily. The combination of an amazing actress and legendary writer Doug Marland made ATWT must-see TV from the mid 80's to early 90's. Apologies if this is an unpopular opinion, but I never felt a connection or warmed up to Kelly Menighan Hensley, in spite of the fact that she held the longest tenure in the role of Emily. Melanie's talent and ability to convey beauty, sensuality, maturity and vulnerability defined and established the blueprint of the Emily Stewart character. I never quite understood the recasting choice. At any rate, amazing segment with a group of core actors from the heyday of ATWT!!!

@gabrielstern49922 жыл бұрын
That's because Doug Marland suddenly died about 6 months after Kelly menighen was recast as Emily Stewart and the ironic thing was micheal David Morrison who played Caleb Snyder died tragically around 3 to 4 weeks before Doug Marland died also Andy kovovit had one final appearance in late 1992 around Christmas time and he did have some scenes with kelly menighen which tells me based on the Doug Marland style of writing that he was going to have Andy kovovit back sometime around 1993 but that never materialized due to Doug Marland death.

Great podcast Alan idid watch back then but got more into the show around 1992 but started to lose interest after Doug Marland died until around 2002 but still the show was never the same. I keep seeing in the comments people not really giving Kelly menighen a chance I thought both were great but I think the later portrayel of Emily Stewart was more do to the writers after Doug Marland died. Also I just got done doing a you tube search Andy kovovit's last appearance as Paul Ryan was around Christmas 1992 for Andy and Courtney's wedding and Andy kovovit did have some scenes with the then new Emily Stewart. Which tells me based off of the way Doug Marland did things that he was going to have Andy kovovit back sometime in 1993 and probably re pair the characters but it never materialized at the time due to Doug Marland sudden and unexpected death. One final thing Alan I think you should do next year a tribute podcast for micheal David Morrison And then one for Doug Marland.. As both died very sudden and unexpectedly within around 3 weeks of each other. And I think the show was kind of never the same after that but I will say Christopher goutman was the best executive producer since John valente and personally I liked Jean pasenante's writing the best out of all the other writers even over higan sheffers but still Doug Marland was kind of the heart of the show and I think his death had a ripple effect on the other 2 Procter and gamble shows as well. Not just as the world turns from my perspective a can of worms or panderoras box got opened that I think contributed to all the shows within the proctor and gamble family eventually all getting canceled.

@@TheLocherRoom your welcome You know things happen and Melanie Smith needed to leave the show I said what I needed to say because though Kelly menighen was a different Emily Stewart she was still a good actress. I also said what I said because I think a lot of mistakes were made. Especially with the other 2 p and g shows during a 2 year period even before Doug Marland died. You also know Doug Marland wrote a blue print on how not to ruin a soap. And had the executive producers and other writers followed his blue print people like Christopher goutman would not have been stuck with such a mess. Sometimes just gradually making changes works better than being in such a hurry to want to tell. Your story There are always lots of ways to tell a story. Also if you look back at the Doug Marland years he was more than happy to retcon out a character or a story line if he hated it. Think about that an example the character rene Lafferty. Another example for 1992 Julie Wendell and having twins Jenny and Pete. And the character Ron Gillette. If you watch it was never mentioned again until somehow right after Doug Marland died it somehow was brought up again. And I think viewers like me hated it. Because it by the point it just looked and sounded stupid. One final example. Holden having a child with angel. That quickly got dropped and was never mentioned again.
