Enchanting as first love. Bergner was famous in this role and you can see why. There was a great tradition of foreign-born Shakespearean actors going back to Salvini and I find her accent delightful. Olivier plays Orlando perfectly as a beautiful goof. Watch next the film he loved best, his magnificent Henry V. The whole cast here is classic and colorizing only heightens the lushness of the sets and costumes. Thanks so much for posting.

Oh, Yes! Bergner is the living end.. her accent and everything about her was spellbinding to these old eyes. Oh, to have a wife such as she. I did once, now passed on. I remember Hildegarde Neff as well... another gorgeous blonde actress. Oh, for the good old days of even the 1960's...but alas it's not to be... sanity, beauty, grace and class are thin nowadays.

There have been many great actors from Great Britain and Hollywood, but few have been really outstanding. This applies the star of this movie, the great Laurence Olivier, our very own Shakespeare's Hamlet. Just look at the way he speaks with his eyes; even when not speaking, everything is given to us on a plate in the subtext of emotions. Dashing, daring, and commanding, he was all this and much more. Another powerhouse of talent was his gorgeous wife, Vivien Leigh. May their souls rest in peace!

When you hear Olivier speak Shakespeare the words come tripping off the tongue so effortlessly. The failings of actors doing Shakespeare is too often the lines are spoken and heard as lines. Like heavy-handed pronouncements. Without the filter to calm the tenor of the character's mood.

Meh! So, 'typically' arrayed a 'Shakespearean ' film of Its' time-frame in Its: hodge-podge of Set/costume design, antiquated Acting style, and at times the Pacing is just too theatrically stilted....BUT!! The spoken delivery is just WONDEROUS and allows the audience to sit and not only enjoy the show, but also to perceive and grasp with intelligence Shakespeare's spoken words. What with Olivier's very attractive looks one sees what in the boudoir dept. So many women and MEN, found (can easily see why Danny Kaye could barely ever to keep his hands off-of-him), and Yes, was well understood by many that Judith Anderson was a master in the role of Rosalind (but that the reason she did not get the role is that she really, really DID NOT care nor personally like Olivier----the Man. But did LIKE and appreciated his acting abilities.
