What a sad twisted plot that never resolves, he only taught his children that commitment means nothing. I kept waiting for some common sense excuse for his betrayal but it only came down to he was "lonely?" Give me a break! I still saw no resolution to the minister accepting this either. What a dumb waste of my time.
@RayPointerChannelКүн бұрын
I agree that the resolution is poor. What about the other family? It almost seems like a YOURS MINE AND OURS situation where the other family would be integrated with the second family and they would get to know each other. The comedic possibilities of this combined family making up the majority of the school body might have made a better story. Since Pennypacker pushes societal limits, it might have been more palatable to challenge some of the corporate culture of the Public School System of the early 20th Century. This subject was approached to a degree in THE HAPPY TIME (1952) directed by Richard Fleischer. This is a more successful comedy with far more interesting characters.

Law?
@paisley29314 күн бұрын
What law are you talking about?... in today's day and age, civil law in most societies allows for just about any arrangement to be called 'marriage'. The only law that truly matters is God's law, Who made marriage to be an indissoluble life-long covenant between one man and one woman exclusively, for the sake of the procreation and protection of children, that's it and that all. If people want to marry their parrot, their s-s-partner, their piano or anything else in between, they can call it whatever they like, but it's not a marriage.
@sdragut14 күн бұрын
You are talking shite. God didn't create marriage. Adam did. You never read the Bible for yourself or you wouldn't be writing such crap. Marriage is a human institution. There is no such arrangements in heaven. Go read what Jesus said about marriage in heaven.

I believe that was the whole intent of this movie to poke fun at men who think they can have their cake and eat it too. At this time movies were used to bring these problems to the public in a large permanent way to subliminally make people talk about these serious issues. Men had all the financial power and women only obtained the right to vote it wasn’t until 1920 that women in the US in every state were given the right to vote when the nineteenth amendment was ratified.

Well now I loved this movie. He broke the sanctity of their marriage by not cleaving only to her but as a christian woman. It was time to forgive him his transgressions. It was a cute lifes story. I wonder how many men did this. Early americans had indian wives in some cases, and travel for work men did this. And mormons and Moses. So , its a forgivable situation.
@bonniemoerdyk98099 күн бұрын
I found the movie a bit a sadness, a bit of comic relief. However, just because the Bible mentions something, it does not mean each verse is Prescriptive. In other words, we don't open the Bible and close our eyes and swoop our pointer finger down and read that verse and go out and do it. That could be disastrous way to 'obey the Lord.' By the way, Moses did NOT have multiple wives...not at the SAME TIME anyway. After his first wife Zipporah died then he married again, which is perfectly acceptable to God, as long as they follow the Lord too. Mormons are NOT true Christians, so you cannot use them as a valid excuse for more than one spouse at the same time. Just because someone does a particular sin, does not mean God will automatically forgive someone. IF someone is repentant, and genuinely feels remorse for what they have done, then if they ask God, He will forgive. Why was it time for forgiveness for his transgressions to be forgiven? Because a few days had passed? If you remember, he (the husband) refused to apologize for all he had done, AND, insisted it was all really his wives fault! No remorse what-so-ever! Just a cocky "I am the god of my own life...& I'll do as I please" attitude! The Book of Proverbs has a lot to say to a person like that. I think she was a little too quick to forgive and renew her vows w/o seeing a distinct change in her foolish husband. 😊 📖
@sandyfreyman35018 күн бұрын
@bonniemoerdyk9809 yes, Moses was married to other wives , that's what leaders of countries did , marry ceremonially and you know king David did that by the hundreds at least. Forgiveness is commanded by God 70x7 times or some such # meaning infinity. And pride is highly frowned upon by God, such as makeup , facelifts ECT. So that's how humanity is, we let men marry us to help with family and love but we are all frail in our love of self. As long as a woman thinks of Jesus as her husbandmon she will be on the narrow path that she needs to traverse. Never exhault a husband too highly for they are only mortal humans.

@christienelson143714 күн бұрын
This is why movies like this were made because men made the laws and rich ones were often allowed to break them. It also explains how foolish it is to blame the wife for a man’s infidelity due to his innate ability to control his emotions and needs. He could have hired someone to help him with the business instead of cheating. I have difficulty believing he learned his lesson by the end of the story only that his wife was a bigger man than him.

How "many men behave?" Who says that this is common? It's a fantasy based on some whispered stories about certain men who had women in other towns or produced illegitimate children. Most of them ran out on the mothers and never supported their children. It wasn't that common then, but is far more common now thanks to Welfare.

It has a controversial subject that is awkwardly handled. It's an attractive subject and an attempt to push the boundaries of The Production Code. But the pacing is slow, and it takes too long to get to the resolution. There are too many dull sequences, and I found myself skipping to Clifton Webb's scenes since he is the more interesting character, and his acting the best.
