The Airbus Helicopters H215 (formerly Eurocopter AS332 Super Puma) is a four-bladed, twin-engine, medium-size utility helicopter developed and initially produced by the French aerospace company Aérospatiale. It has been subsequently manufactured by the successor companies Eurocopter and Airbus Helicopters. The Super Puma is a re-engined and more voluminous version of the original Aérospatiale SA 330 Puma.
It is powered by a pair of Turbomeca Makila 1A1 turboshaft engines which drive the rotorcraft's four-bladed main rotor and five-bladed tail rotor.
The main cabin of the Super Puma, which is accessed via a pair of sliding plug doors, features a reconfigurable floor arrangement that enables various passenger seating or cargo configurations to be adopted, which includes specialised configurations for medical operators. According to Airbus Helicopters, in addition to the two pilots, the short-fuselage AS332 can accommodate up to 15 passengers while the stretched-fuselage AS332 increases this to 20 passengers in a comfortable configuration.

Why would the LA County Sheriff Department buy a French chopper? Why not buy an S-61 for instance? Where did the crew receive their training?

They do have a S-61, well they used to. It got replaced by AS-330

They used to have a S61 but changed to a Super Puma

We had four S-61's in the inventory. However, due to their age and heavy maintenance requirements they needed to be replaced. We looked at the Sikorsky S-92, but it was cost prohibitive. The AS 322 Super Pumas were available and we purchased them. I wish we had S92's, but they were out of reach.

LA County is bigger than Delaware and Rhode Island combined and has more people, 10+ million, than 41 states. It has a bigger economy than a number of countries. The Super Pumas replaced their Sea Kings they used for many years.

@@frost7724 sorry for the late reply, but most law enforcement agencies, require you to be a patrol officer for a number of years, before you can request to be put in an air unit, you will first start out as an observer, and some agencies will help you get your pilot's license.

Why a Super Puma when there's plenty of products from Bell and Sikorsky helicopters.

Great question. I've herd that they get a great price and maintenance contract and find out later that they should have gone with a Bell or Sikorsky. Note: this what I've been told.

@@EdWhisenantAviation The U.S. Army has a supply of Black Hawk helicopters and they're trying to break into the civilian market by converting military aircraft for civilian use like Bell. The New Jersey State Police had a frustrating time in selling their Sikorsky S-76s because they were considered too big. My Uncle and I aren't fans of Airbus helicopters and jets.
