No matter what part of Japan is shown , I’m amazed at the cleanliness , and beauty. No litter , no graffiti. Wonderful.

Stopped by Asahikawa on the way to Abashiri in the middle of winter 10 years ago. Such a lovely city! Just like John said, I was also stunned by the open space outside of Asahikawa station (it wasn't green when I was there though, it was a vast open space buried in snow). I enjoyed their ramen too, especially when it was -15C outside.

Lawson’s latte is quite good better than Starbucks for me. I was in Asahikawa last month and weather was quite warm compared to now.

I have been impressed with the konbini coffee improvements over the year! When I came, they had no coffee except in a can. It’s been quite an evolution.

9:18 Wow, this is incredible urban planning! A modern train station, next to a nature preserve, with a grand plaza leading to a pedestrian zone?!?! 😍
@RandomStuff-zw7uhАй бұрын
One thing I am always very confused about Japan: For pedestrian walks such as around 16:10, with a yellow divider in between, are you supposed to walk on the right? Or the left?

would you say asahikawa is a good place to visit if i dont drive? i get the sense that most, if not all, of hokkaido requires a car. also you mentioned you did a video on aoba ramen a few years ago but i cant find it on youtube. would like to watch it.
@onlyinjapanGOАй бұрын
Sure, esp if you like ramen! It’s also great as a hub for Furano, Biei, Daisetsuzan etc. a lot of cheap eats and drinking places.

Saw a drive through on the side of Asahikawa Station! I’m talking about the area around where I walked, central Asahikawa. There’s a lot more but you kind of need a car 🚙 I skipped the coffee, had ramen instead 😂

On the "American Coffee" to be fair, as an American, most people here do prefer milder coffee. I know a lot of people who thinks even Starbucks is too strong. It does sound from your tasting that "American Coffee" maybe too weak though. 😅

Can you give google pin drops for Alba and Tenkin Ramen (sorry, I don’t know the spelling)? And where is the clothes rental shop at in relation to the hotel? I would like to visit Asahikawa next time I am in Hokkaido.

John, why do you not recommend hitchhiking? I thought Japan was safe? Is that part of Japan dangerous?
@onlyinjapanGOАй бұрын
Because if something DOES happen and I had recommended it, it’s my fault and I don’t want people to do something with ZERO safety nets on my recommendation. It really is not for everyone. I didn’t feel it’s dangerous and happy to share my experience but there is always a danger ⚠️ and it requires instinct and judgement to say no and that’s on each person to decide on their level of readiness for something like this so cannot recommend for all people.
@GaryOlmsteadSrАй бұрын

'Americano' - diluted espresso, hence, 'weak' coffee. 'American', on the other hand, coffee that's further diluted ??
@onlyinjapanGOАй бұрын
Americano in Japan is not diluted espresso as you suspect hahaha. It’s literally weak drip coffee. They use less grinds or more water 😂 that’s how they make it. Honestly, in America, I never taste coffee that weak, so I think they kind of got their streams crossed in Japan, I should make an episode on it.
@i.normanАй бұрын
@@onlyinjapanGO Starbucks and any decent local cafe are still diluted espresso. I imagine at the chain restaurants and jidohanbaiki is just 'brown' water. Do a tour of local coffee shops in Asakikawa-shi. I want a reason to move up there !! Btw, in Chitose and I imagine else where, there are interesting cafes catering to bird watching Cheers !!

You had a freaking fish on your waffle and you say that's the best breakfast in Japan?!?
@onlyinjapanGOАй бұрын
Yeah, the quality of that fish was outstanding! The mountain wasabi dish was incredible. I don’t understand it all the time, mind melting experience … but it wasn’t bad. I’m open minded and now mind melted 🫠 I do wish they had Vermont maple syrup but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t “the best” Japanese breakfast.
