stabil and comfortable - that is Asana. Given that you are awake and your spine is erect and straight. Yama and Niyama are moral principles - is false. Patanjali was never concerned with morality or ethics, he was concerned with that which works to prepare the mind (calm the mind if you will) to achieve meditation. Essence of Yogasanas are 3 fold. 1. discipline your body to sit for 2-3 or more hours without feeling discomfort as a preparation for Dharana and Dhyana. (sitting Asana) 2. preparing your body (mostly by cleansing) for higher energies in Pranayama without damaging your physical body. (all other Asanas) 3. gaining control over your body externally and internally. (all Asanas, but mostly sitting Asanas) Yogasanas are not gymnastics, not stretch exercises, not even health exercises, because they are not exercises at all. They benefit your health and your flexibility, but that is not their purpose. The purpose is to make your body a refine tool instead of a problem. People are often saying - I do Yogasanas to get healthy. Patanjali would say - get healthy first, and then we can talk Asanas.
