I'm a natural redhead and currently have a pain doc tell me that that particular gene is what causes my low pain tolerance as well as the need more more anesthesia then other people. I researched it and found a lot of data supporting this as well. I've never heard of it causing a high pain tolerance. Also, I truly do not handle pain well at all. Like, disabled due to back pain, not well.
@creativename32563 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's so confusing with all this contradicting information. But if this particular video is right, it must mean that your back would be terrible to deal with for anyone. I'm sorry you're in a lot of pain.
@kyssedbyfyre9153 жыл бұрын
There are other issues that caused your body to get _AMPLIFIED_ pain. I suffer fibromyalgia, and so my body basically misfires and my synspses get confused. Pain occurs both to an amplified degree, AND nerves register pain when they should not; nerves also register other touch sensations as painful. So sometimes just the pressure of lying in the bed might physically hurt, or hubby will gently squeeze my thigh and it feels like a vice to me. Not implying you have anything like this, just that the are OTHER conditions that can certainly affect how your body perceives pain. Autoimmune issues are vast and cause inflammation that causes swelling/pain anywhere/everywhere in the body. You MIGHT just be underdiagnosed or undertreated for your pain. Pain Drs aren't tremendously helpful in my experience, though I hope you have a good one. *Chronic pain sufferer since 2006*

I'm also ginger, and I live in the subtropical region of my country which is in a subtropical and temperate climate, and I really don't like it when I go south into the more temperate regions of the country, and I love the summer here, but if I was to live further north in a tropical region I would probably feel way too hot in January, in say Fiji or Brisbane. And I might be an outlier as far as gingers go because most probably enjoy that temperate climate over the arctic, tropical or even subtropical.

It's actually only opiates, not any other. It's a fallacy that all fingers are mcr15, as most redheads do not carry the mutant gene. It's a gene that presents itself with red hair, not the other way around and the presenter should of mentioned that, especially if you inherited the red hair. I was the first redhead in both family lines as far back as we could go. There are many other factors to lead geneticists towards testing for the gene, Before we all assume we all have it? Nice video! Just a little correction: in the middle ages redhead were not systematically thought to be witches: it's simply that they always pictured witches as redheads so only redheads are burnt on iconographical documents. For the parallel: if you were asked to draw a pirate, you'd probably give him an eye patch, hook, wooden leg or parrot pet, just like in the middle ages, when authors were asked to draw witches, they would meke them ginger, for the public to better understand that this is a witch.

I definitely have a higher pain tolerance, but cannot tolerate cold weather/cold fluctuations in environmental temp at all. Heat does not bother me, but probably due to conditioning. I am from a warmer climate, so I don't seem to be affected by the heat.

My hair is kind of auburn/moggy tortoiseshell, and I've had some weird experiences with pain that, in hindsight, this video explained. I remember having a very bad bout of cellulitis (as in, had to be rushed to hospital to be put on IV antibiotics for a week bad,) and when I was in the ambulance, the paramedic asked me if I wanted medication for the pain. I was a bit confused by this, because, as far as I could tell, I wasn't in enough pain to need medication, so I said no, I'm fine thanks. "It's okay to need painkillers, you know - don't think you need to be brave and tough it out," he said. I assured him I wasn't doing that. He pointed to the heart monitor I was attached to, and explained that he could tell I was in pain because my pulse and heart rate were racing, and that was typical of someone with my condition who was in a lot of pain. Well then I was REALLY confused, and found myself scrutinising my senses and thinking "AM I in pain then? I don't feel like I'm in painkiller-worthy pain, but maybe I'm just being unobservant..." (I also had a temperature of 105, so it was possible my brain wasn't firing on all cylinders.) In the end I decided to take his word for it and agreed to have the medication.

I've also noticed though, that I need way more numbing at the dentist. and when I had my wisdom teeth taken out - the surgeon told me that is a thing.. that redheads are less sensitive to pain medication and often require more.

If there's different levels of Pheomelanin, does that result in different hair shades? Or is it more to do with the type. And does the amount of Pheomelanin or colour affect the pain reseptors differently?
@AsapSCIENCE3 жыл бұрын
yes to the first question, and they can't quite FULLY correlate it yet, but the research is still coming in. SUCH GOOD QUESTIONS!
@Enleuk3 жыл бұрын
If I recall correctly, there are two types of Eumelanins, black and brown, and one type of pheomelanin. Your hair color is determined by which combination you have and how much of each melanin you have. E.g. You have to have very little brown melanin and nothing else, you get blonde hair. If you have very little brown melanin and combine that with some pheomelanin you get red hair (shade depending on the amount of pheomelanin). If you have very little brown melanin and very little black melanin you get brown hair. If you have more than just a little black melanin, you have black hair. As humans have several genes that produce more black melanin, most people have black hair, and would still have had black hair even if you removed a few of those black melanin genes.

Fun fact: despite what we are taught in school about hair colours being predicted on a recessive-dominant 4xpunnet square, they're actually a combo of cumulative, dominant and recessive. You have way more than just 2 alleles coding for it, those alleles are on multiple chromosomes, and the expression of the alleles is also partly decided by environment factors outside of genetics. So your coding for blonde hair might be something like "BBbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbgggg" not something as simple as the "bg" shown on punnet squares (I'm going B-brown, b-blonde, g-ginger btw) It's why hair colour may change with age if the alleles of one colour are at the ends of chromosomes (and get destroyed) or are on sections of chromosomes which will get activated later on by hormones eg, plenty of kids born with blonde hair, through puberty change to brown hair. side note I didn't mention, not only are there multiple locations for the hair colour alleles, there's also multiple versions of each allele, think blonde.v1 blonde.v2 etc etc which will interact differently with other hair colour alleles, hormone influences and external inputs. Basically this just gets more and more complex the more you try understand it. And it's just hair colour. FYI- eye colour is the same sort of coding as hair colour. It's why a punnet square won't explain eye pattern(sunflower, cornflower etc), coloured flecks and other unique parts of eye colour. In general people's eye colour won't change as much over time though, since the cells aren't being replaced as often as actively growing hair is. The recessive-dominant punnet square used on traits like eye and hair colour is just a good teaching method because it gets kids interested. The more accurate examples for teachers to use would be widow's peaks, attached/detached earlobes etc which are truly dominant recessive. But that wouldn't get kids interested would it? Back on topic. Based off of how hair colour *actually* works, it's likely that people would express the pain resistance to different levels even between gingers based off of how many copies, amd which specific copies, of the ginger allele they have. But considering that even something "simple" like hair colour coding still isn't 100'/, understood it's going to take a while to fully figure out the link between hair colour alleles and that pain reception difference.

@@Mel-qr5ob The squares are also just easier for kids to understand. Try explaining epigenetics to a school child. My hair personally changed color at least three times growing up and I've had hair follicles grey and switch back to properly pigmented so that just the tip was grey.
