also worth mentioning as a apprentice pipefitter , i was with a group men tasked with knocking of asbestos lagging of pipes in the boiler room being replaced at C&A in bristol , shoveling into bins , transport in lift to ground level and tip into skip .the dust masks were butterfly masks with layer of cloth .even the welding cape,s were made of asbestos cloth. similar to a fire blanket

I’m so glad this subject is being shared again. This is a very important presentation . I would definitely have been exposed to it in my years as an electrician due to ignorance of its dangers and ignorance of what contains asbestos. I lost a customer to asbestos related lung damage. He was a carpenter, had just retired and had only spent 6 months working with asbestos cladding in the early 70s . It was awful to see him suffer and very sad. The problem is the younger generation won’t always recognise it until it’s too late because of their experience of it being limited. It is especially difficult to recognise in such things as old plastic floor tiles plastic toilet cisterns or arc shields in old 3036 fuse boxes and so many more things. Thank you efixx 👍

The asbestos in plastic floor tiles and toilet cisterns will be white . This isnt acid resistant so the body can attack it . The carpenter you mentioned was probably exposed to blue or brown, heavy exposure in a short time is the worst thing. If he smoked that doubles the damage

I'm involved with a grade 2* listed building which was found to have asbestos in the roof void shortly after work on a major refurb was started. That discovery added £300k to the cost of the refurb and added 3 months to the duration of the work. Thankfully we were able to get a grant to cover the additional cost as otherwise we'd have been left with an unusable building.

Get in the habit of always having the correct breathing PPE with you. ANY dust should be protected against. Don't just use the cheapest masks. Get properly fitted masks with the correct filters. Always have a combined P3A2 mask in your kit bag.

Like most sparks, I've worked in quite a few builds that I found out afterwards that the ceiling contained asbestos. I was working at a school a drilling loads of holes along a corridor and a couple of weeks later. Everything was taped off and the entire ceiling I was working on was removed when I went back in there.

The thing that makes me mad is about 15 years ago I was working in a 3 bedroom house. The plumber found asbestos. Owner through his architect got a so called professional company to sort it. They insisted the Marley floor tiles came up and the property next door had its garage roof removed or they wouldn’t give a certificate. First day back on site with a copy of certificate on the wall .I found asbestos. This happened 3 times on the same job. The same thing happened on another job I was working on .. I’m not saying all companies are the same but this can’t be a isolated incident. And they are charging thousands

Companies generally only inspect the areas instructed by their clients.

For people who aren't aware, this doesnt just apply to active buildings, be aware that if you happen to be restoring or exploring an abandoned building you can and should assume that any insulation, tiles or ceiling are asbestos and treat them like that. Also for the mechanic folks out there brake pads and clutch discs used to be made with asbestos, so if you're working on an old car assume its asbestos and wet it down! Stay safe out there people!

I was doing at a job at a local uni, checked the register for asbestos, non present. Went to do the job, cut a hole in the ceiling and pulled the cutter out to see that bumpy texture you see on AIB. Closed off the room and put a great whopping sign on the door stating the situation. Told estates and they had it checked within 4 hours. Wasn't asbestos, but didn't seem to stop the other trades going in, kicking the dust about and taking my 'contaminated' Bosch hole saw in the interim; they didn't seem to care.

Universities are some of the worse and when they find it above ceilings they spray cover the asbestos. They also don’t keep their Asbestos logs upto date ( a breach of regulations btw).

I had some work done on my old asbestos laced switchboard a while back as part of an air conditioner installation. The lads that did the work didn't care. They merrily drilled through the side, throwing clouds of dust as they went. Nor did they care when the cut the entry hole in the wall for the pipework and electrical to the inside unit, right through asbestos cement (fibro) sheeting, again more dust flying. The response when I pointed out what they had done to one of them, "Well working in the mines didn't get me, so I'll survive". He sure will. For about 50 years or so.

When was asbestos banned from being used in ceilings in the uk?
@paultipton743
@paultipton743 8 ай бұрын
The ban came in 1999 but is still found in a lot of textured ceilings, depends on building age

All commercial properties have to have an Asbestos survey carried out by law. Ask for it before you commence your work. Get ready for the blank stares, alternatively get the client to drill all the down lighter holes.

Why are there people who think white Asbestos is not dangerous. Tory minister smirked and giggled during asbestos victims debate in 2012, according to the Mirror newspaper. I have completed my Asbestos awareness training course. Another tick box exercise. There are 10 people behind me, who would happily do the job if I refuse. Cement dust, is the new asbestos. 10/10 for the video.

Brick dust gives you silicosis . People didn't die from silicosis previously because the asbestosis killed them first .

My father worked in the glass industry most of his life , he had fibrosis , a stiffening of the lungs because of dust inhalation. He died of pneumonia in hospital . Sadly lots of others will go the same way . As regards white asbestos ftom my awareness training white isn't acid resistant so can be attacked by the body , scar tissue will form but to a far lesser degree.

DONT DO THIS! Asbestos is only truly at it's max danger when it's in the air, angle grinding it will generate asbestos dust and that is breathable!

Sadly the asbestos problem doesn’t stop there. Car mechanics worked on dusty brakes without knowing the risks for many years. A lot of us over a certain age will have been exposed to asbestos in talcum powder. When I worked on a farm I was exposed to dust from asbestos roofing sheet being cut with a disc cutter, luckily I stayed upwind, but still worrying. Take care, I don’t want to see you coming to me for a chest X-ray!
Should you install a full AFDD or RCBO CONSUMER UNIT?
