I used to be hesitant about indulgences, I didn't get the deal with indulgences and also the history of selling them makes me uncomfortable praying for an indulgence. I now get the point of indulgences that it's not a shortcut to heaven but it's an act of mercy for every one of us on our road to sainthood, so thank you Fr Mark-Mary and Fr Gregory so explaining indulgences so well. P.S. I love the jokes between the different orders!

There is only 1 God, only 1 true heavenly father, no doubt about it and that's what it's about. If you have a biological father, he is supposed to raise and teach his children along with the mother, yes? Founding fathers and priests do the same. Of course we do not attribute the creation of mankind and the being our Lord and Savior to these men. This is what I believe is true, but im not perfect and I could be wrong. What about the concept that penance and indulgences are not so much about what we did to God as this was 100% dealt with at the cross, but rather it is about being reconciled with those whom we injure? This can be resolved through the offended party offering forgiveness of the heart or temporal justice being meeted out by God on Earth or through Purgatory. This is why we are to do good works and to pray for those going through Purgatory so the damage done by ourselves and others can be healed, reconciled, and forgiven.

I don't know if you can help someone else with their penance (most penances I've received are super easy anyway), but you can pray for them. 1 John 5:16-17 is relevant. St. Monica comes to mind. It's a good question. I wish he had covered it. :)

He did. But, as recorded in the kjb, He also said things like "not everyone who cries out 'Lord, Lord!' will be saved" and "if you love me, keep my commands." And Paul exhorts us to "finish the race" and "work out your salvation with fear and trembling." So, two thoughts: 1) we don't lose our Free Will when we get saved. 2) Salvation is a gift. We can return it, neglect it, abuse it, etc., just like any physical gift we receive. Read scripture as a whole. God is Merciful AND Just.

I have a question. I spend 30 minutes daily reading the daily readings and reflecting on them. I also do the rosary daily, but by myself. Must I do the rosary with someone else daily to work on a plenary indulgence?
@kidno6 Жыл бұрын
In order for the indulgence to be a plenary indulgence it has to be "in a church or oratory, in a family gathering, within a religious community or recognized association of he faithful, or in any other context in which the faithful have come together for an upright purpose."

So in order to get an indulgence I have to recive the Eucharist that day, have gotten confession within 8 days, prayed for the Popes intensions, and be detached from all sin including venial sins and then and only then do some good work, will "reward" me an indulgence?
@fredericktmiller3 жыл бұрын
I had to look up the word plenary. I've tended to hear it with the word indulgence. But I hear "plenary meeting" or so, which means "mandatory," more or less. You're talking to fellow believers, but I suggest you bring it down to a 3rd-grade level. Or younger. You made sense to me, and I'm not worried about history in this way. I'm not Catholic, but even Catholics who go to confession or pray for particular things might wonder both about the nature of indulgence and the possible abuse of the thing. The answer could be "Indulgence for Dummies." For this format, try again. Be Mr. Rogers. And be honest if things ever got out of hand. We all go overboard on this ship. You both speak very well and have charisma. (I had to look up how to spell charisma just like I did the meaning of plenary.) But it's true. You're great!

Martin Luther got mad because of the Monk who abused the practice and extorted money from people making them think they had to pay money for their loved ones to make it to heaven. Unfortunately he threw the baby out with the bathwater and didn't stop at the actual abuse. He ditched 7 books of the bible that had been accepted for 1500 years without question since the 4th century when the Bible was compiled. Then he and a nun ditched their vows they took before God and got married. He's a heretic.

Would someone have to state, to the Lord, Im offering this act today for a soul? What if someone does all that anyway, would an indulgence have been granted unbeknownst to the person praying, for a soul in purgatory? Also, do you chose which soul you ask this pardon, or do we offer it to whoever the Lord choses? Sometimes I have asked for Mary to use my offering for wherever she likes.

A condition is that you have to state that you are doing this act for the sake of an indulgence and you can be specific or leave it to God to use as is best. You can also make a statement from time to time such as, "God, I wish to gain every indulgence you ever offer me." and make it a habit to go to confession every 2 weeks and say a couple daily prayers for the intentions of the Pope and you'll be set on those details.

I basically understand how it works, but my question would be how do you ensure that people are truly repentant in their acts? When you put a name to the action it just seems that so many people would just do the act to mark a box and think it’s fine. I know for myself that I wouldn’t just do an act to get a reward, but wouldn’t so many people in the church acquire a dysfunctional relationship to the gospel i.e. thinking their works are what’s saving them and not Christ? I’m an evangelical Protestant thinking and praying about converting to the CC but indulgences are one of the things that I have a hard time understanding let alone having to explain to family or friends who would bring it up as a reason for hesitancy. I would greatly appreciate any genuine answers!
@kidno6 Жыл бұрын
I'm a cradle Catholic and had this same concern. But many saints have said even a rosary poorly said has great merit. So I struck out and started dutifully checking the boxes. But God works thought that imperfect prayer to bring the devotion you need. Now I can't even begin to tell you how my prayer life and devotion has grown in this practice.

Now I am more confused than ever and I still cannot except the reality of purgatory. How can we pray for someone who has died when we don’t know where they are? We don’t know if they are in heaven or hell let alone purgatory? I don’t see how purgatory goes along with any kind of scripture and I’m no expert but there’s plenty in the Bible that says Jesus paid the price, the whole price for our sins.
@christopherbayne90613 жыл бұрын
I believe purgatory is found in the Catholic Bible ( Book Of Macabees); which is Old Testament. + or - 150 bc. For an Old Testament believer , purgatory would apply, I suppose.... a.k.a. "Abraham's Bosom". After Christ went to the cross; there is no need for purgatory. If a person can get to heaven via having someone alive praying for a dead human; then Christ suffered and died in vain. I pray to FATHER,SON, and HOLY SPIRIT.

I have something to share here and just needed some opinions. I may be committing a sin just by discussing this as it was during my confession but Im just confused. I go for confession weekly and sometimes twice a week as I have a problem with lust and porn and understand I cannot receive holy communion in a state of mortal sin..I also tend to bring the same sins over and over again each time..especially my problems with sexual impurity. Today father said ' I think you are incapable of change and I don't believe you can or want to change..you are abusing this sacrament of confession coming here every week with the same sins over and over again..you are wasting my time, God's time and your time..' I want to take this as constructive and know that this is the voice of God telling me to get my act together and wake up but I felt very disheartened and discouraged. I understand I truly need to work on being repentant for my sins but I fall to temptation so easily. Just wanted some thoughts as to what I should do. God bless you for taking the time to read this.

Jesus died for ALL my sins. Thats why I can be the blessed man in Romans 4:8. If you believe in Purgatory then you believe Jesus didnt suffer for the punishment of all your sins, (because of the temporal punishment from venial sins). This is an effectual denial of the sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice. Can you say you have the peace from God described in Romans 5:1 if you are continually losing salvation through mortal sins? Even skipping one mass is a mortal sin. This is not the free gospel of Jesus Christ through grace alone through faith alone. I want you who is reading this to recognize the peace that comes from Jesus and the love that he has for you. My goodness. Do you not see how this is saying that what Christ did was not enough? Christ plus anything is not the gospel. If anybody needed to do anything or give anything then what was the point of Christ dying on the cross? There is so much "Church" "tradition"That is being practiced here that is not found in Scripture. How can you reconcile we are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord. (2 Corinthians 5:8) and say that there is a purgatory? Absent from the body present with the Lord It's clear as day. Any type of works-based religion is false. That's not to say that we won't perform works but those are mere products of faith. Faith without works is dead as you are probably all familiar with. What that's talking about is "profession" and not "possession". The "works" would be what is known as the "fruit". If someone were to claim that they are a believer and yet continued to live the same way that is the proof that there's been no change no possession of the Holy Spirit. That's not to say that we don't sin once we are saved But there's a change. I would love to discuss this stuff with these guys or anybody on here. We can be respectful and we can use scripture to discuss this stuff rather than opinion.
