Welcome back to Glasgow's Old Ruins - Downstream now from the previous Videos of the Dawsholm Viaduct, we come to the Railway Junction high above the River Kelvin that were destined for the Old Maryhill Central Station...
A great adventure was had in ascending the Old Railway Bridges above the River Kelvin and investigating the Rail Line - which I found evidence of a demolished building on the Line. Along with seeing and documenting these marvellous Old World Structures here that are now Ruins we see many interesting things along the way ... 🦜🦌
Including the closed off-limits portal to the remnants of Maryhill Central Station - with some of the remains of the Station encased underneath Maryhill Tesco on the other side of the fortified gate, which may include some of the Rail Lines, Platforms, Pillars for the future potentiality of reinstating the Railway - Just behind the gate at the end of the Video, underneath the Streets of Maryhill...
Maryhill Central Station was opened as Maryhill Barracks Station in 1894 with a Railway Bridge connected it from Kirklee, Dawsholm or Kelvinside for the Caledonian Railway on the Central Line. Renamed to Maryhill Central in 1952 but then ultimately closing to passengers by 1964.
Leaving behind a massive City-trail of Ruins and Remnants... Which I have Explored and Documented many of what is left behind 🔎
Urban Expeditions on KZbin
The site of the station is now occupied by Maryhill Shopping Centre which was built in the early 1980s. This was rebuilt in around 2010 to consist of a large supermarket, with 4 retail units and car parking below.
However, a space was left in the basement of the shopping centre to allow the line to be re-opened in the future; this was still considered an option in the mid-1990s, with the building of a large bingo hall on the cutting (east of the site) left a channel for the original line to be re-opened below ground.
In 1999, however, this prospect was put to rest with the sale of land for housing along many parts of the track in the Kirklee and Cleveden sections of the track along with the demolition of many of the bridges around the same area for safety reasons. Maryhill Shopping Centre was demolished in early 2010 and replaced by a new Tesco supermarket. The void beneath the supermarket for the railway station has again been retained to allow the future possibility of reopening the railway line.
I of course cannot progress past the gate which once connected to an abandoned tunnel on the other side of the premises to travel underneath Ruchill Park on route for the Possil Railway Station on Balmore Road which still exists as an Old Ghost Station (Future Video Coming Soon) for this Railway Line, but are simply documenting it's existence as the end of this weeks Explore on the Old Abandoned Railway - Glasgow's Old Ruins.
Next Time on Glasgow's Old Ruins we journey underneath the Forth and Clyde Canal to Explore and Document the Abandoned Kelvindale Railway Tunnel 🚂
Also on my Channel from this Old Caledonian Railway are the following to watch -
Botanic Gardens Station (Underground Tunnel)
Kelvinside Station (Underground Tunnel)
Bridgeton Station (Underground Tunnel)
Crow Road Station (Underground Tunnel)
Partick Central Station (Hidden Platforms)
Yorkhill Bridge for Partick Central Station -
And much more 🔍

My auld dad was a stone mason and brick layer in the 1980s he worked on the original co-op supermarket that was built on the site and part of the job was going down into the station to reinforce the the old tunnels and I can remember him telling me that the station was mostly complete and looked as if they had just closed the doors and walked away hundreds of years ago he said it was very spooky

Great stuff! Glasgow's history is waaay older and more mysterious than we've been taught, more than most folk care to even imagine.

Another crackin video, how mad is it seeing Deer in the middle of Glasgow! Would be nice to see a wee wonder along the dummy railway up at the old Possil station part and along to Parkhouse. Thats where we played soldiers and dead mans fall along at the Chirnside school end in the 80s lol. Might well be unnavigable jungle along that end now though 😄👍

Thanks m8! I know I've never seen Deer here, it was a fortunate thing to see especially as they didn't run. I'm heading up that way at some point definitely, I know the Station on Balmore Road and I can see the old track on Google, is this the dummy Railway? Al look more into it thanks again m8

@@Urban-Expeditions Aye we called it the dummy when we were wee in the 80s, im sure the track went over a bridge over the old Eastfield depot, behind McDonalds in Springburn, along the north side of Stobhill hospital and down Balornock, you can still kinda see the remnants and layyout on google maps a bit. My wee nana used to live on Crowhill street between Eastfield depot and the triangle park in Parkhouse. The dummy wasnt too overgrown back then if i mind right but these days it might well be a nightmare lol. Keep up the great vids bud and be safe if you check it oot, crackin channel 👍

Starts at 7:09 then theres a shot of the Miley at 7:24 to 7:30 then the other smaller tunnel leading to Lambhill kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYeqiX-KmtaBsMk 👍

Terrific looking bridges and viaducts, perfect for a railway modeller like myself. Next time I get back to Glasgow I will go looking for that magnificent viaduct to get a few dimensions

i well remember this or part of this line being open, as kids we played in our local 'park' The Botanic Gardens and in the vents {now fenced off but still clearly visible} we would waitfor the train to pass (steam engine} and inhale deeply the fumes smoke and steam that came billowing up the vent shaft. Good Times! of course the railway station and ticket office entrance just ouside the Botanics main gate, which eventualy became a dance studio (which i attended) for ballroom/latin American dancing then it was Jive and The Twist 'deffo another era lol but still good times.i best stop typing now otherwise i would fill the page with my boring memories lol

Does sound like good times! Never boring these memories of kicking around old Glasgow, the thrill of growing up back then as an experience that kids today are not gifted with anymore ✌️

what size are those stones on the remnants of what remains of the bridge at Wyndforf and the River? They look like 15” highway ground level
@Urban-Expeditions
@Urban-Expeditions 20 күн бұрын
You could be right, the size of each individual Stone that makes up the structure or the size of the structure in full as it towers over the River? I don't know exact measurements of either but I can say that the Stones and Bridge itself are massive!

I am guessing there would have been two tracks on the viaduct?

Yes I believe two tracks on each, with a 4 platform Station up ahead 👍 forgot to add this piece of info and another piece on the Wyndford flats but next time
