dont know why Asda doesn't have different versions like tesco express and sainsbury local. Could easily make more money in the central areas of cities.

I think it has a lot to do with Walmart policy and planning. The unofficial formula for Walmart in North America is one Walmart for 100,000 people. There are exceptions that are based on some regions or districts in slightly more rural areas (particularly in Canada, that I know of that lack larger retail presence). ASDA is their UK presence, but I do agree that they might make a tidy sum if they had a similar plan.
