Intramuros (Latin: within the walls) is the historic centre and oldest district of Manila, the capital city of the Philippines.
From the city's foundation in 1571 to the end of Spanish rule in 1898, Intramuros was Manila.
The Spanish conquistador Miguel López de Legazpi laid the foundations of the new capital on the former site of Maynilad, a palisaded riverside settlement ruled by a native chieftain. To protect the inhabitants from attack, in the late 1500s construction began on a series of stone walls and fortifications that would eventually enclose a pentagonal area approximately 0.67 sq km in size, within which lay a tight grid-like system of streets and a main square surrounded by government structures. The defensive curtain was more or less completed by the 1700s, although improvements and other construction work continued well into the next century.
Manila Cathedral, facing the main square of Intramuros
Within the protective walls rose a city of stone palaces, churches, monasteries, convents, schools, and fine courtyard houses. In the centuries that followed, Manila (meaning Intramuros) served as the capital of the Spanish East Indies - the centre of commerce, education, government, and religion in Spain's most distant imperial possession.
Except for a brief period under British rule (1762-1764), Intramuros remained a Spanish city until 1898, when the U.S. took control of the Philippines at the end of the Spanish-American War.
In 1945, during the fierce Battle of Manila between American, Filipino and Japanese forces, Intramuros was almost completely destroyed. Instead of rebuilding on the same site, many of the religious orders and educational institutions that once resided in the walled district packed up and moved elsewhere. Although steps were taken to protect the city's historic character, vague laws and poor enforcement led to many unsightly modern buildings being built upon the ruins of the old. In 1979, the Intramuros Administration was established and stronger measures introduced in order to preserve what was left.
Many of the city's ancient gates and most of the walls have since been restored. On the other hand, there has been almost no progress in the reconstruction of key landmarks (such as major churches and old government buildings), due in part to a serious lack of funds and the existence of new structures.
Also known as the Ciudad Murada (Walled City) because of its most famous feature: a nearly three-mile-long circuit of massive stone walls and fortifications that almost completely surrounds the entire district.
Old-world Intramuros is home to Spanish-era landmarks like Fort Santiago, with a large stone gate and a shrine to national hero José Rizal. The ornate Manila Cathedral houses bronze carvings and stained glass windows, while the San Agustin Church museum has religious artwork and statues. Spanish colonial furniture and art fill Casa Manila museum, and horse-drawn carriages (kalesa) ply the area’s cobblestone streets.

@@djcgofivhj5988 Pre-Colonial Philippines technically speaking is not the Philippines because Philippines is the united form of Pre-hispanic kingdoms, and was united by Spain. We have royals indeed, but these royals were still part of the nobility when Spain took over. They were given the Principalia titles of Don and Dona and were given power to rule over lands which became Haciendas. Spain was a monarchy so they understood the system, and respected that system of our pre-hispanic ancestors especially those who converted to Catholicism. In fact, some of the kingdoms including that Cebu ceded peacefully by converting to Catholicism and most of these pre-colonial royals were given Christian names based on Spains' kings and queens. It was actually the Americans that erased the titles and the monarchy system out of our country, stripping off the aristocracy and nobility of the Principalia forever because the US do not support the ideals of a monarchical hierarchy under their leadership. You must learn to appreciate our Hispanic Era. It's completely different era ofcourse but that does not mean it's less important because what happened throughout 300 years of Hispanic Era played an important part of the development of a united, modern Filipino culture that all Filipinos regardless of ethnicity do and follow up until now.

Congratulations Gentlemen! Wonderful job in presenting a comprehensive overview of Intramuros, adjacent Ft, Santiago, and the opulent lifestyle of the wealthy Spaniards and succeeding powerful residents. I hope that Manila restaurants, including the one in Intramuros would offer desserts that were brought to the Philippines by Filipinos who studied in Europe, like Sans Rival Cake, Brazo Mercedes, Canonigo aside from the ubiquitous leche flan! In most Latin American countries, they only call this last dessert, Flan, which distinguishes a Philippine prepared one when one sees Lech Flan. But thank you for promoting and preserving Philippine heritage and history. .

If not for World War 2, all of Intramuros' houses will be the same as that of Casa Manila. They became the proof of development and wealth our Filipino Ilustrados achieved during the 1800s. The opening of Suez Canal and Manila into the world trade really helped Ilustrados to afford these houses.

@@yvnchua9966 It must be restored to its former glory especially the lost buildings because through that people will know better the history of Manila and our country. Ofcourse places like Fort Santiago won't be used as a "military headquarters" anymore but instead as a museum na. Restored buildings will also be helpful on housing artifacts na important sa lugar na yon. Restoring Intramuros will be much better way because just like those Intramuros on Latin America lalo na yung katulad sa Puerto Rico at sa Colombia, magiging tourism hotspot din sya saMaynila and magkakaroon ng economic development din sa Maynila.

In 1824 and 1868 was the milestone in Philippine History for proxy Filipino citizens in 21st century excluding real Filipino citizens such as Peninsulares, Creoles and Mestizos. The idea is that years were the starting point that proxy Filipino citizens should have their own Governor General from the womb of Filipina women when Mexico declare independence from Spain. We all know that Intramuros was built by Spaniards after Miguel Lopez de Legaspi from Mexico entered in Philippine setting stage in making history. Stated years would mean equality between Mexico and Philippines for Governor General title could be transferred to Philippines not relying on Governor General from Mexico. Intramuros was empty with title called Governor General. Once Governor General, you are allowed to be given Spanish Armada by king of Spain with gold bullion of bars plus access to global exploration and discovery voyage elsewhere plus nobility class status of nobles in your fleets. Mixture of business, government, religion and finance are being followed by officers from Spanish King Philip II in one royalty class type absolute monarchy ruler.

Fuck yeah right here. It's honestly a great green space and it's such a sickening joke the government and entitled rich Oligarch's can't even make it a public park for all. Such great green and space. If there is one simple way to improve Intramuros and the city it's that. They can move a golf course outside the city. Don't see the issue and complication.
@littlesparrow1284
@littlesparrow1284 2 жыл бұрын
Better leave it like that.. It would be an eyesore if it becomes a public place after all there are numerous parks inside intramuros. And besides before it became a golf course it used to be a moat the Americans converted it into a golf course so basically it's one of the indelible mark of one of our colonial masters and it's our American heritage.
