UPDATE: It seems that I was the only reviewer with the QR wobble issue. Asetek is sending me packaging to send it back for analysis to figure out what went wrong. They are also sending me a new QR. Also, the apparent wobble in the front mount is due to a number of things: 1. My rig is on wheels and the camera isn't 2. I'm a big guy who was trying to swing off a steering wheel to make a QR come loose For me, it's nothing to worry about but I do appreciate your concerns. I said I'd clear that up.
@Leynad778
@Leynad778 Жыл бұрын
If it happened to you, it will happen to likely many others as well. IMO they should've kept the pin-method for a more proper connection because it compensates production tolerances, which every decent QR-method is all about. For example those Mige-bases for the VRS are coming with a leverage pin, but it doesn't fit into the shaft-notch first. You have to rasp off just enough steel with a file so it fits tight. The V-shape of the SC2-QR is a nice method to fit two pieces together including tolerances, so without play, but it needs (at least) the pin to hold the parts together. Asetek did it with a spring pushing chamfers against each other (at least looks like it) and a stiffer spring doesn't fix the main issue and the fact a small spring far more easily fails one time compare to a steel-pin.

im super glad you identified the play in the QR, this is a literal deal breaker for me and im very on the fence if i was to buy one and replace my simucube, one of the main reasons i sold my fanatec DD1 was because any kind of play in the QR would just sit on my mind, i would keep wiggling the wheel to see if its getting worse and you can imagine its just not the sort of thing that should worry you, every since changing to the simucube ive always felt it was so incredibly solid i could jump up and down on the wheel and never need to worry so im VERY disappointed to see that asetek seem to have had the right idea by basically copying the design concept with the IP purchase and trying to make the QR what it always needed to be which is the same but powered, the fact there is ANY play at all is kind of shocking to me and it would be a clear gamble to buy right now, it would be great if you did a follow up to this when asetek confirm they are happy with the shipping QR and see if its the same, it would literally make the decision for me if to buy or not.

What Simucube do you want to replace and why? You know that there is a Mige-motor in the Asetek-bases? So the same tech than in the Simucube 1 or VRS and with the same awkward clamp-mechanism inside. So the only force that prevents the wheel from slipping on the shaft is the rigidity of the aluminium threads of the clamp seen at 6:35, which was also the major (potential) 'issue' I had with the VRS base using the hub and why I prefer Simucube 2 bases even I've had a RMA once with my SC2 Pro, probably due to a firmware-problem.

@@Leynad778 well I currently have a simucube 2 pro and I purchased the asetek Invicta yesterday to compare them both myself side by side but that won’t happen until some time in march when the base is estimated to arrive, I have put the simucube up for sale in the meantime, if it goes it goes. My understanding is that the asetek bases use custom mige motors with custom electronics etc, there are many types of mige motor and I’m sure they will not be just off the shelf 5 year old motors, they will have been designed to a specification requested by asetek… hence the “custom” part. I’m perfectly happy with the simucube quite honestly but I have the sense with simucube that they have no intention of going anywhere fast. By that I mean it seems to me that granite know what they have with simucube and are relying on its reputation to sell rather than trying something new or exciting, in the last few years they have released one wheel and one stupendously expensive but amazing pedal so they do not have an attractive ecosystem, I’m not excited by the simucube anymore and feel like they are being left behind when manufacturers like moza and simagic hit the scene and knock out wheel after wheel and base after base, so there seems to be no urgency with simucube, it’s all rather boring. Asetek on the other hand seem to have more drive, the urgency I want from a manufacturer, there is a promise of more wheels, the ability to upgrade your hardware for console compatibility in future and I like their attitude towards the products, if something isn’t right they are on it fast and seem to stand by that promise of bringing the best products they can. I also like that asetek recognised where the quality was with simucube and actively purchased IP to ensure they have the best starting point and I think that was crucial in my decision knowing how good simucubes are. So yeh, nothing wrong with simucube at all, absolutely amazing but so good it’s become boring to me if that makes sense

@@jinx20001 I bought the VRS DFP last year because I had FFB-dropouts with the SC2 Pro and thought I had another RMA, but a firmware-update fixed it. I liked the VRS FFB more than the SC2 Pro and spread the word at the granitedevice-forum and they fixed it as well. So I'm quite happy with it for now even TrueDrive could be better in terms of features. Releasing lots of products like Moza and Asetek I find rather suspicious in terms of reliability and this review is a good example. Complex products needs time and the devil is in the detail. The fact you can rip off the wheel from the QR should've been noticed during the prototype-process before manufacturing. For me it smells too much like Fanatec regarding flaws (v1.5 incoming next) and imagine this could possibly happen in a real racecar. It's not acceptable and a stiffer spring doesn't fix it. Actually the hole QR is only as tough as this little spring inside the mechanism and I would choose the pin every time even it means wheels with LED-lights and displays need a cable. Asetek is smart and selling stuff that isn't perfect part of their strategy. The pedalface-plates are uncomfortable? Here are smooth ones for 60 bucks. The brake-pedal has not enough travel? Just buy the 'Long Travel Kit' etc. It's perfectly fine for me, but I don't buy into it.

This appears to be a good first attempt. Most of the issues are easily solvable. However, in my opinion, there does seem to be too much plastic used in that steering wheel given the price point. Finally, got to compliment you on this review. Excellent attention to detail, clear and well structured. I am sure Asetek will appreciate your comments and they seem to be very keen to listen to their customers, which is refreshing. Thanks for the amazing comment! There's a lot of plastic for sure but I actually think the steering wheel represents decent value for the functionality. I know what you mean though. Do bear in mind that this is designed and produced in Europe where wages and warranties are expensive for companies. It's somewhat unrealistic to compare european products as like for like with things that are made in cheaper labour economies.

i currently have a simucube 2 pro and just ordered the invicta aswell... strictly because of the IP purchase, if Asetek didnt purchase IP from granite devices i wouldnt have looked twice at the Asetek bases honestly but with that IP its clear they had a great opportunity to take what simucube has already done and expand on it, thats why the QR is a very similar design but they give it what the simucube was always missing which is power. I think hardware wise they are quite different, clearly different motors and it seems Asetek might be even using a more potent one for speed and response. Most importantly though the software looks extremely similar and software can make or break a wheelbase, Asetek are clearly using similar settings to the simucube but just renamed them, cornering force assist for example is obviously simucubes static force reduction filter, torque behavior prediction is obviously simucubes force reconstruction filter (or a similar version to it), anti oscillation is clearly simucubes ultra low latency mode which is designed for specifically reducing oscillation... So the Asetek bases are very much like they have taken what a simucube offers and expanded on it where they think it needed it. Thats why i ordered one :) only so far they can go with the simucube when it has hardware limitations like the quick release with no power (even though its such an incredible QR). I believe its actually in granite devices interests for Asetek to do well and succeed because part of the purchase Asetek made was giving granite shares in the Asetek brand, they both benefit from this hence why those simucube boys said yep lets do it :).

Good review, honest and in depth even if a bit on a "positive" side, as the QR issues and not being able to dial in FFB right in games is a bit of a let down. I am definitely sticking to my Simucube 2 Pro, where I do not feel the QR to be cumbersome, it's quite the opposite for me, it is simple and works, has zero play whatsoever. I am also fine with the wireless connections, never let me down before. The wheel not having backlit buttons is also a massive let down, albeit looking good, I still think it is a major oversight. I do not think it is worth buying these when there is Simagic and Moza out there with better offerings. Asetek is definitely in infancy with Sim tech and it requires maturation, this can take few years.

Hello. I am grateful to you for your thoughts in the reviews and always watch them with interest. Please tell me. I am considering Asetek forte, simucube 2 sport and simagic alpha. I can buy simucube, but what keeps me from buying is that they have expensive wireless wheels, antenna, quick release (reliable, but simagic and moza also have reliable and modern), while there is a brand new asetek with a quick release and the same motor and encoder like simucube, and the price of asetek is lower. Yes, the simucube is undeniably time tested, but they should have updated with technology and released more accessible wheels (which asetek did). I like simagic, their wheels and their price, but how does their 18bit servo compare in feel to mige 22bit? What is the torque slew rate on the simagic Alfa? Considering the reaction time of a person in max 150ms, if I'm not mistaken or 250, then it is unlikely that these values will be distinguishable in the game ?! I play AC and dert rally 2.0 maybe 2 hours a week, no more. I want to buy a base and forget about updating it forever) Thank you.

For me, simagic wins. Why? Wheel choice, power though QR, smaller form factor, better mounting options, relatively affordable, similar ffb (I wouldn’t tell the difference in a blind test). There’s no flex in the QR but the poor tolerance led to play. Apparently other reviewers didn’t have this issue so that’s positive. I probably just got a bad one. So I don't see the big selling point of this over the SC sport tbh. Sure the QR is quicker, but better? Not sure.
@LaurenceDusoswa
@LaurenceDusoswa Жыл бұрын
The ffb is amazing. The QR is far better because it doesn't need wireless and provides power to the wheel. The motor specs are also superior but I never go into that detail because it's not something that I have the ability to feel.
@dogoncouch7818
@dogoncouch7818 Жыл бұрын
This seems underwhelming, despite what looks like a great motor there are a lot of small details just seem like they're not good enough for something that should be competing with SC. The front plate seems very thin (also, why on earth would anyone make a wheelbase that doesn't fit existing front mount plates?). The torque off button only shuts off the USB connection, and is stuck somewhere it can't easily be hit if you've just hurt your hand, both of which make it seem like more of a convenience afterthought than the safety device it should be. It's like someone had "torque off button" on a checklist and wanted to cross it off, without understanding the point. And those power/torque off buttons! They don't even look DIY, if they were DIY they'd look a lot more professional. Asetek did seem to get a lot right, so hopefully they can work out these little things in the future. Appreciate the level of detail in this review, it was a good watch as always. I'm excited to see how much Asetek got right, but secretly a bit glad I don't feel like selling my SC2 now and going for an upgrade.
@LaurenceDusoswa

Thanks for a great comment! I’m not sure if that’s an issue, the emergency stop button placement. It actually surprises me how many SC2 owners were expecting the asetek range to be a potential upgrade. I hadn’t anticipated that.

@@LaurenceDusoswa I know all about the R5...that wasn't the point. The point is that the, as you call it, target audience for these multi thousand dollar wheels can not possibly be that big---they're gonna run out of folks to sell this schlock to and fast. The Sim market is already shrinking (and debacles like LeMans is only making it look even worse) and garbage like this is not helping it in the least. We need $300 DD wheels or at the very least folks like you and many other reviewers on here not blasting the offerings at that price point in your reviews so folks might just try this out instead of ignoring it because "the reviewers on YT said you NEED a DD wheel or don't bother competing"....this is the reality of it, and that's all there is to it. Stop boosting these over priced (and in this case apparently poorly made...really??) companies and their rich boy ecosystems and put them instead in their place and I don't know, maybe tell folks to NOT buy all of these massively overpriced wheels. That might actually make them stop this never ending trend of ripping off all of us. Just a thought that everyone getting into this is thinking. Again, stop this already!!
