Trees with large or compound leaves don't make good bonsai or so they say. Don't believe em I say. I have many and if I do say so myself they are not half bad. Ash Fraxinus Excelsior. These trees have all been grown from seed .

Lovely collection 🤩 I will watch out for an updated version immediately 😄 I do have a couple of ashes as well as an ash forest. I also shorten each leave back to 4-6 small leaves, to let enough light in and keep the profile small. Enjoyed watching, thanks 🙋‍♀️

You're welcome. Glad you enjoyed. Ash often get a bad rap as bonsai but I enjoy working with them

Great looking little trees. Interesting how they have multiple branches from a single grow point as the crown develops. Thanks

Not all will germinate the first spring many need two winters I found. Oh and protection from rodents! Stay safe

I have left a couple of self seeded ones to grow on in the ground which i will take up next Spring. Also a few in pots from this year following your example! I actually have one in a pot at least 20 yrs which has very knarly and twisted roots.

Heya man, great video, I am going to attempt to transplant a young sappling from my friends raised flower bed and try and continue it to a bonsai. I am not sure if you know but there is a process called (if I remember correctly) stratification, where you can put tree seeds into a zip lock bag with some damp material and put them either into the fridge or the freezer depending on species for a few months and then bring them out and I think once they thaw out it must activate something because the germinate almost straight away, me and my friend used to do it with oak trees but I am not sure if it works with ash.

Yeah it will work with Ash and is good if you collect the seed in winter when it is dormant, but if you collect it in Autumn and it is fresh you will get even better results.

Very nice Sid. I have a few growing at the moment but I plan on making larger bonsai with them - 3 feet or something like that, so it'll take some time. Was wondering about the leaves, it's good to see their size controlled. Cheers.

Thank you. I think they make nice large bonsai but this experiment went well. The leaves reduced even better than I imagined which is very encouraging. Stay safe

Hi there, Sid! Very nice trees. Because of your trees i bought shamel ash tree from a nursery in a 5 gallon size of pot. I’m just new in bonsai so i’m still learning from people like you. I just want to ask when is the perfect time to repot, pruning and what substrate do you used for your ash trees? Thanks a lot for your videos you really inspire people like us.

Early Spring is usually the best time to repot just as the trees begin to come out of dormancy. Structural pruning is usually carried out whilst the tree is dormant in winter. Development pruning through the growing season. Watch my video on Chinese Elm where I discuss my soil mix about 11minutes in. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6S7Y4ZqZ8edf8U Stay safe.

Hi I have a ash bonsai about 6 years old from seed it’s not grown any leaves this year it doesn’t look dead and still moisture in stem is there anyway of saving it
@SidsTrees

I'm surprised it hasn't sprouted any leaves at all this year. Did you repot it? The only thing I can suggest is you pull it out of the pot and check the roots for damage, insect damage or rot etc. Then if all seems well be patient and keep things crossed. You could try a weak seaweed feed as a tonic. Good luck. Stay safe
