They can change the travelling companions all they want but I personally believe replacing Ash and pikachu would be a huge mistake. Both these characters have touched the hearts of millions for over two decades. I can understand the frustration people have for Ash's continuous failures but that is not the character's fault. It is simply the writers. I would personally love to see an aging, competent Ash who uses all his accumulated skills from past journeys to defeat his opponents with popular characters such as Serena travelling with him to fit more mature audiences. However the pokemon series do focus on the young children to buy the games. They seem to not care about the OGs. If they though sack Ash, the writers owe us the best sending off they can possibly give. Although the English dub formulated the pun "gotta ketchum all" the Japanese probably still view Satoshi as the face of the series. I just hope they don't mess it up

A change in main characters and a completely new story has been done before and has been successful. Look at Yu-Gi-Oh, Beyblade, Cardfight Vanguard, etc. they have all done it some more than others and it didn't hurt the branding.

Even Legend of Zelda, each Link is a new Link, and even though they look similar, they are actually very very different. People are fine with change if you actually work to make those changes good. But as the most recent games from pokemon I think it's abundantly clear that pokemon company, like Ash and pikachu, don't like evolving.

You can keep Ash as the protagonist of the anime (which is mostly aimed at children), but have a side series closer to Origins or Generations for the older Pokémon fans. Start with an adaptation of Gold and Silver and follow Ethan's journey across Johto and Kanto, ending with his fight against Red on Mt. Silver. Give Gen II some love.

No pikachu on the cover and rarely a special pikachu in game. The only instances of special pikachus I can think of are the obvious pokemon yellows starter and the ash pikachu in sun and moon, and the latter is an event related to the movie so it isn't actually part of the game's story

Honestly, I want Ash to stay, get his ass beaten in Galar, then decide to pull out all the stops and bring back EVERYTHING. He gets back Greninja, Pidgeot, Goodra, etc., as well as ‘mons he didn’t catch, like Haunter, and maybe even some legendaries he’s met. He brings back the counter-shield and contest moves. He gets a mega or two (or at least Gigantamax forms), as well as Ash-Greninja. Give Pikachu Thunder back and have him resume roasting Ground-types (explained as a unique ability or something). He trains his aura for the first time in over a decade. Hell, give Ash access to his powers as King of the Sea, whenever he’s near enough to the sea. As a counterbalance, Team Rocket regains their competence from BW. The Galar league is utterly insane since everyone and their mother takes part in the gym battles. All Ash’s rivals and Champions from past series gravitate towards Galar’s gyms, including Tobias from DP. Maybe even combine all the previous Teams somehow. I want to see this escalation where the average battle is as awesome as Greninja vs Sceptile. I want Pikachu to battle a Kaiju Tyranitar and Greninja to clash with Tobias’ Darkrai. I want Cynthia’s Garchomp to go mega. It’s never gonna happen, but I want it.
