I honestly think it makes total narrative sense for Sinnoh to be Ash's lowest win rate because it was the series most dedicated to challenging him and his training methods throughout its entire run. But the whole point is that Ash is so determined and creative that he always gets back up and pushes for wins no matter how many times he loses, and unlike Paul, refuses to compromise his Pokémon's feelings in order to achieve it. Ash won where it mattered, which is why the Sinnoh team resonates with the audience so much regardless of the statistics. Because they're full of personality and we see them continually working to grow rather than having the Ace of the region completely overshadow everything. Even if Infernape did carry the win rate and have the most story significance, he wasn't the only one we got to see. Which is why the overall team is so great.

Reminds me of what one of my old coaches told me: if your win rate is below 50%, you need to work harder and train yourself up. If your win rate is above 50%, then you aren’t challenging yourself. Go find better competition and compete with them until your win rate is 50% again. Once you are good enough at that level to be above 50%, go to the next level up.

The most likely reason why Sinnoh's team is the one with the lowest winrate is probably because the writers really wanted to make Ash lose a lot of battles. Which was something I noticed while watching DP. In most of the gyms, Ash would have to rematch them up to 2 or even 3 times. Edit: I even predicted it to be the lowest, when Zac said "I couldn't believe this" thats when I had the gotch ya moment.

That as well as the fact that Kanto's worst Pokemon barely battled at all. Like Muk has 2 battles, Lapras has 2 battles, Butterfree has 3 battles, etc. So Kanto's high performers get to come back and battle a TON while the low performers get barely any action at all and thus don't drag the winrate down too much. Compare that with regions like Sinnoh and Unova where mons like Buizel, Oshawott, and Torterra got many battles but lost a ton too while in some cases the high performers like Krookodile barely got any action at all.

Talonflame was quite the double-edged sword for the Kalos team, he participated in nearly every single major battle Ash had in that season, (Probably one of if not the highest gym battle counts outside of starters) but he was also forced to be the first or second one out meaning all he could really do was either A. Lose immediately, or B. Knock one out, THEN lose. Noivern did jackshit for his team tho.

@@ladyselin35Eh that's a stretch. Swellow didn't get used until the latter half of Hoenn during Winona's gym battle. It lost in Ash's first battle against Brawly and then never got used. Even in the Hoenn League, Ash doesn't use Swellow until the victory tournament where the matches are full battles. Sure, that's where Swellow picked up most of its wins (2 against Katie, 2 against Tyson, and Drawed against Morrison), but that doesn't account for much. It's a good thing it got more usage in the Battle Frontier against Tucker and Spencer. Meanwhile the only battle that Talonflame didn't participate in (to the best of our knowledge since we don't know what teams Ash used in the first two rounds of the Kalos League) was Clemont's, which makes sense given his typing. Granted, this doesn't take away from Swellow's overall prowess, but saying he used Talonflame like he used Swellow is pretty inaccurate given their usages.

@@eljordinio7647 Just because someone wins more doesn’t mean they’re better characters. Lucario did get the most focus, but most of that was because he was the ‘Mon that Ash was always meant to have, he had access to Mega Evolution, and he was the spiritual successor to Ash-Greninja. I’d be lying if I said that he didn’t actually grow, but the only real obstacles he had were Bea and Cynthia. Sirfetch’d, on the other hand, was a similar character who loved to battle and wanted to get stronger. But, since he had to work harder at it than Lucario, his training episodes (which weren’t much fewer than Lucario’s) meant more to me. Ash was an underdog; even in Journeys, the world saw him as a dark horse, barely even recognizing him as a Champion until the Masters Tournament. And, Sirfetch’d was very much that, and the fact is that he contributed to Ash’s wins against Cynthia and Leon. It was Sirfetch’d who really put the hurt on Garchomp (which no one else was seen to have done), and she still almost beat Lucario at his best while she was at her worst. Lucario, on the other hand, didn’t even make it to Rillaboom (who served as the big gatekeeper before Charizard), while Sirfetch’d could at least tag-team it with Dracovish. Even if Sirfetch’d wasn’t better-written than Lucario, it wouldn’t be due to him losing more than Lucario.

@@kamentrainerhorn2073 it also doesn't mean that underachievers should get any leniency or that their overall failures should be ignored Sure sirfetch'd put in the work a lot for ash but it wasn't enough. That's like saying that underachievers should not have to work harder cos simply doing their best is good enough. With a win rate like that it's unacceptable. Least Dragonite, who also jobbed a lot and has the second lowest win rate, ended up with a passable one The Alola team had no weakest links since everyone's win rate was passable, if not stellar. We didn't need them reverting back to making certain Pokemon lose a lot more and look bad. We had enough of that with trash like torterra, Noivern and Torkoal who are only known for their weakness

I’m curious if the rankings are the same if you go by actual wins and losses Ash has had in each region rather than comparing individual mons. I ask cause when it comes to a mon basis, its easy for data to be skewed by the size of his full team and the mons he used in given battles (basically the pikachu problem). Sorta a which Ash Ketchum is the strongest rather than which team is the strongest.

While I'm happy Kanto got 1st place, I should point out that the reason Ash's Kanto team took the win is likely because of how much they get brought back. Because they were Ash's first team, they're obviously going to have more time and opportunity to come back and snag a few more wins. Thanks, Nostalgia. Such cases include the Battle Frontier, the Sinnoh league, Charizard in Unova, and most of Jhoto. Yeah, Jhoto kinda got the short end of the stick since they had to share a lot of their screen time with the Kanto team. Nevertheless, congratulations, Kanto!

Part of why the teams that do have the W/L ratios they do is because of how battles are setup in those series. Gen 1 Anime battles were a lot shorter and to the point, so you have more moments like Kingler sweeping an entire battle in the league and Ash not having a 6v6 battle at all. The average 6v6 means you're likely going to see 5 of Ash's mons faint to add tension to the battle, which is an extra 5 losses any time one happens. Winning a battle 6-5 (having one mon left at the end of a 6v6) is roughly a 54% win rate. Winning a Battle 3-2 (having one mon left at the end of a 3v3) is a 60% win rate. Do this enough times, and the ratios favor the series with shorter battles. It's why the series with the most 6v6 battles (DP and XYZ) have some of the lowest ratios. The inverse goes for the #2 Alola, which only had one 6v6 with Ash Vs. Kukui. Since most battles were brief spurts of action, they didn't make Ash lose 5 mons repeatedly for dramatic tension. Shorter battles means less losses within those battles.

I would've also liked to see a point score of some kind come into play, as it isn't exactly fair if one pokemon has won 3/4 battles with a 75% win rate, and another has one 60/100 battles, giving it a 60% win rate. I think giving 1 point for a win, none for a tie, and -1 for a loss could better indicate the ranking of the teams.

The Kanto Team is slightly unfair, because that's the only team where Ash actively used his Pokémon even after leaving the region he caught them in. The Kanto starters were heavily used way late into Johto and that affects the numbers of the Johto mons. Same goes for the Battle Frontier, Ash's use of particularly his Kanto Pokémon affected them numbers if his Hoenn team (though the Battle Frontier is a little more forgivable since he was just retraveling through Kanto again). So by default, the Kanto mons have higher numbers simply because he used them more than other Pokémon. If you counted only the battles fought in the Regions of the seasons the Pokémon were caught in (not counting Pikachu because he was everywhere and you gave him identical numbers so he didn't twist the total too much), then Kanto would be the lowest

I think something that would be really interesting is how all these win/lose rates compare to the number of episodes per Region. Series with more episodes have more room for wins, but also more room for losses. So I wonder if longer series (the ones with more filler) have a tendency to inflate the win rate, loss rate, or try to balance it out.

You know as endearing as I found a lot of Aim to Be a Master episodes to be, this vid really highlights how hard the writers dropped the ball with giving his old mons some action. It's bonkers that only Corphish got to have a proper battle in that series and it was a loss at that. Beyond that, great vid. I gotta say the overall team rankings definitely caught me off guard a bit. I guess it really shows how much the narrative can affect overall team performance. Sinnoh had such brutal competition while Kanto mons got to come back many times and put on a show for instance.

Reason why Sinnoh team is ranked so low : 1) Tough battles and opponents : Paul, Flint, Volkner , Barry's dad , Cynthia etc etc. 2) less battles in the sinnoh league : A lot of ash's old gen pokemons participated in the league . 3) foreshadowing the other pokemons to make space for Infernape. Still the other pokemons like Buizel, Staraptor and Gliscor are some of the most loved pokemons of ash. 4) a better story and development , probably why DP is considered one of the best Pokémon series.

This is a small error, but I’m pretty sure Kingler’s win rate should be 83%, not 71%. Both you and that one chart counts Kingler’s battle against Pete’s arcanine as a lost, but during the battle against Pete, Ash recalled Kingler before he was declared as unable to battle. Bulbapedia also says that Kingler was recalled instead of defeated, if you want to double check there.

Something that needs to be said is that averages can sometimes be misleading, especially with something abstract as strength. There are dozens of factors that can contribute to a win or a loss including the strength of your opponent, your state of mind, and how strong your partner is at the time. So you cannot definitively say Ash's Kanto team is the strongest because things are in flux constantly.
