Sure i wont deny Ash is strong, but some of his defeats are embarassing. Red on the other hand captured every 150 Pokemon, single handely took down team rocket by himself which is impressive knowing how strong Giovanni is, and won a league the FIRST TIME HE TRIED, doing all that at such a young age (i doubt he has eternal youth like Ash) already puts you above pretty much any trainer, and then after capturing Mewtwo one of the most powerfull pokemon in the world he is pretty much unbeatable, whats left for him to do or defeat? Sure he could roam around other regions but it would probably not be a challenge for him. While we can pretty much say Red was never defeated, Ash makes some serious mistakes often. Rembember Greninja vs Charizard? Ash deserved to lose that battle, he had ABSOLUTE ADVANTAGE, it was raining he had a water type which had advantage and Greninja was clearly faster than Charizard. So what does he decide? Use his full power right away, making Charizard mega evolve to keep up, with that, losing the weakness to water. And it was pretty clear that whitout mega evolving that Charizard was not a big menace. And lets not talk about him losing his brains and abilities to lose to some random trainer that appears during his Journey, or the obvious traps he keeps falling made by team rocket

Most people will pick Ash for nostalgia over the anime, but anyone who grew up in the late 90s/early 2000s would know Red is one of the toughest fights of all the games. Considering Ash's track record of losing most big battles before winning them on rematches, Red would absolutely destroy him in the first match. Now imo, Red versus Cynthia would be interesting, considering she's one of the hardest Elite Four champions

A battle between the two would certainly be close, but there's no reason to think Red couldn't excel in the anime's system, too. While Ash has many strong Pokemon, he's released many of his strongest, and many of them are out of practice, while Red's team is regularly in combat and barely changing.
