The book never emphasised that the characters were expressionless like they have been depicted in this movie. It seems like they are only reciting the words out of the script instead of living the characters. The book created another image of the characters in my head which is totally opposite of the portrayal of the characters in this movie.

I think it's because Kaul takes inspiraron from Bresson.

Yeh Mani Kaul ka style hai. Absolute madcap
@film_nirvana4 ай бұрын
mani kaul and other auteurs believed cinema is not just a medium to put words into images which portray, with full fidelity, the emotions coming out of the written word. They believe that cinematography in itself creates a music and a mood of its own and embodiments by the actors takes away the focus from the cinematography and the edit. So in essence, their idea is not to convert words into images, but images into consciousness. Bresson, tarkovsky, Mani Kaul, Dreyer are some people who are notorious for wooden use of actors to various degrees. So like bresson and mani kaul go very far in this wooden use of actors, but have a lasting impact if the mood is allowed to continue just through the cinematagrophy, the composition and the edit.

@@film_nirvana Don't put Bresson & Kaul in the same sentence. Both of them might have had the same intention while making their films, but the final result is vastly different in quality.
@film_nirvana4 ай бұрын
@@abhaythegodfather so? result doesnt matter for artists. its the process, the thought process and the process of ideation and making the film that really counts for artists. nobody i mentioned was really making films for the box office or had a strict result in mind that they had while making their own films. so final result is irrelevant actually. its the process, the idea, the decision to use actors in a certain way, to use composition and music in a certain way, to move the camera a certain way, to edit a certain way, all that is what matters.

all those folks saying 'expressionless acting', 'dull dialogues' etc. are simply failing to understand the essence of this film, its style, its vibe (as genZs would say). I feel there is sufficient expression, just as much as the film's subject requires. If anyone is watching this film with the expectation of typical bollywood dramatisation, they are watching the wrong film.

I totally loved it ❤ it’s bittersweet story by Respected writer Mohan Rakesh ji 🙏🏼 Madam Rekha Sabnis ji looked so lovely. It is startling that I haven’t watched any other film of this talented actress🌸 Some may find this type of portrayal a bit bland and unartistic. But I liked it, for a change. Kudos to Shri Mani Kaul ji and his crew💐 Lastly, I thank the channel owner Mr. Arun Khopkar for sharing this beautiful film💛 I dunno how it ended up in my feed. Liked & subscribed ✌🏼

The actors did their job well: Mani Kaul was a filmmaker that belonged to the lineage of Robert Bresson. In that school of filmmaking, it is believed that expressive acting is manipulative. Showing a man breaking down on the floor crying is manipulative because it tells the audience to feel sad. Removing expressive-acting makes a more honest film. But it becomes less accessible when compared to a masala film or a Satyajit Ray film. That being said, it does not mean you have to enjoy the film. It is in no way a form that seeks popularity or commerciality. But since you watched it, I would like to believe you are interested in understanding this form better, I’ll suggest you watch a film called Au Hasard Balthazar by Robert Bresson. It’s a film about a donkey, the most expressionless animal. Bresson’s mastery lies in using that animal to make you feel something. If you like it, you can watch his other films like L’Argent. Another thing I should mention here, Satyajit Ray wrote a critique of Mani Kaul’s Duvidha in his book Our Films, Their Films. In it, he said that although Kaul follows Bresson’s tradition, he fails at being as good as Bresson. I’ll let you be the judge of that.
