The Task Force on Police Reform, a collaboration between Ashby Village Elder Action and Berkeley Friends/Racial Justice Action Team, presents this panel discussion on new California law AB 481 that makes the militarization of local police forces transparent to the community.
Barbara Atwell, from Berkeley Friends, will moderate this discussion where the four panelists will explore:
- What kind of equipment East Bay police departments have,
- What safeguards protect the public’s welfare, safety, civil rights, and civil liberties, and
- How the purchase of military equipment and associated training has, as some say, changed the interactions of police with the citizens.

Panelists:
Andrew Greenwood, Retired Berkeley Police Chief
John "Chip" Moore, Chairman, Berkeley Police Accountability Board
Marisol Cantú, Member of Richmond Reimagining Public Safety Task Force
Omar Farmer, Founder of Oakland Neighbors Inspiring Trust

Transforming how we age in our communities, Ashby Village connects us with one another, offering support and opportunities for meaningful, engaging experiences.
Ashby Village is a vibrant nonprofit that connects members with each other and with the resources we need to stay active, independent and fulfilled. We rely on one another-and on an extensive volunteer pool, screened service providers and partnerships with local agencies, groups and businesses.
Ashby Village launched in 2010 after many discussions and community meetings that began in 2007, initially serving Berkeley, Albany, Kensington, El Cerrito, Emeryville and part of Oakland. In December 2019, Ashby Village expanded to Richmond. July 1, 2020 North Oakland Village merged with Ashby Village.
