SNK should know their scrutenous audience, and know that their brand is supposed to represent uncompromising quality. That controller is an affront.
@Overhazard5 жыл бұрын
Since I haven't found a comment in regards to the joystick without microswitches, what is the issue with this? It sounds like the joystick on that controller is a modern-style one meant for full 360-degree translation rather than the 8 directions (I presume) microswptches would have. It looks like the sort of joystick that all modern game systems and PC controllers have, since they're designed for full 3-D games in mind. If that's true, and the issue becomes that the games register up and down movements at too wide of a degree of angles, wouldn't it be solved by changing the rangle of angles registered to particular directions? That's what's being done with modern games where up and down do something different from left and right, like 2-D fighting games and falling blocks puzzle games.

A big selling point for the Nintendo minis is that Nintendo games don't have ports in other companies' consoles, add to that the company's draconian rules on ROMs and emulators and you have an easy way to play old Nintendo games that isn't on PC, something desirable even for your average Joe. SNK has ported their most famous games to hell and back, with good results sometimes (the PS2 compilations for example), the PC versions being very recent too. There's no reason for anyone to buy this, purists won't bother and people who want a nostalgia trip likely have already bought their favorite games with a previous port. I could understand the purpose if they put very old and hardly ported games in there, but it's basically a "Greatest Hits" compilation. I also don't understand why going with the "mini-screen" gimmick, especially for games which pride and valor was the detailed pixel art and big-ass sprites. Even Nintendo, a company that has a history of success with portable consoles and small screens, didn't go for that stupid idea. It's like a Neo-Geo "console" made by people who never actually played SNK games.
@krashd6 жыл бұрын
I wish more people knew this. It's the same reason Nintendo emulators are so popular, I don't need a Megadrive/Genesis emulator because pretty much everything except Sonic was released for my Amiga so I got to play most Sega games, Nintendo on the other hand have their exclusivity decree that means you need an actual Nintendo or an emulator to see what all the fuss is about!

If you have a 3D printer, or know someone that does have one, you could measure the analogue stick pot, and print out an octagonally notched inlay for the stick to rest in. The GameCube did this and it worked a treat, I'm frankly amazed that no-one, not even Nintendo copied this innovation going forward, given that really improves the usability of an analogue stick (plus it makes a really satisfying sound when you roll it). Mind you, this won't fix it looking awful on the TV, but at least it'll be playable.

The closest I ever got to a Neo Geo home system was seeing the huge box in the mall once. Years later I got into emulation and played more thanks to MAME.

It's still bananas to me that I can emulate NeoGeo games on my Xbox Series S. And with the custom Unibios, you can even pick what region the game loads in, and if you want the arcade or home console mode. It's legit still amazing to me. Like, emulation in general is one of those things that, despite using it constantly, still takes me a second to wrap my head around. Like, I can emulate arcade games, home console games, even Gamecube, Wii, and PS2. I can take every game I played as a kid, every single one, and load it up on my Xbox. From fuckin Atari 2600 to NES and SNES, Gameboy, GBA, Saturn, and way more. I even get to try out games I never had played as a kid. Like the Commander Keen games, and Giana Sisters on Dos. It's just a bit nuts to me.

The whole idea of home consoles, starting with the Atari 2600 (and there might even have been an earlier one with the same idea), is that of interchangeable cartridges, and therefore an unlimited amount of games on the same device. Now we are going back to the time when there's only a fixed amount of hard-coded games in the gaming device.

A shame that SNK have learnt NOTHING in the 40 years of their existence. They are still giving us expensive consoles with massive flaws in them. You would think that they would learn after the Neo Geo X and Tommo fiasco but no. I bet you can't even plug in that large Neo Geo X arcade joystick to that thing, not that you wanted to as playing the Mini on your TV is pretty dreadful. They'll no doubt probably going to release a version 2 (with different games on it) with a USB cable to fix the picture of the first one, but that's doubtful if people are going to complain that they'll pay well over a hundred of their currency for something that's barely playable. Tried too hard to be like Nintendo and failed miserably! It's like the 90's all over again.
@jasonblalock44296 жыл бұрын
Seriously. Back when this was first announced, I was looking at it going "What the hell were they thinking?" It's a gimmick, and a badly-designed one at that. I mean, say what you will about the Neo Geo X, the *idea* behind it was great. It was just totally cocked up in execution. But this thing? It was a bad idea from the outset that apparently only got worse as it went through R&D. :-/
@David3158426 жыл бұрын
The novelty of it being a mini arcade cabinet is a gimmick, though it does make sense for something like this. They were trying to cash in on those other mini arcade cabinets that had famous 80's games on them like Pac-Man and Galaxian, so it's easy to see where the idea came from. If it were a tad bit larger with more space for the joystick and controllers, then it would have been better and slightly worth while as far as the price tag is concerned, but it isn't. Sadly like the Neo Geo X the execution is piss poor and it doesn't really justify the disgustingly high price tag for it either.

According to Amazon, they are going to re-release the Neo Geo mini to include a MayFlash controller converter allowing people to use different controllers, which could solve the problems with the control somewhat, however it's going to cost an extra £50.00 to the cost of the console, but you might be able to get it separately or the price would go down a bit eventually for that particular bundle.

You wouldn't believe just how popular King of Fighters is in Mexico. I'm talking crowds of kids and tweens surrounding a single cabinet watching a match going on/waiting on their turn to play.

That's nothing compared to the insane popularity in Mainland China where KOF 97 reigns supreme in that country. Don't forget bootlegs and even official KOF games developed by Chinese game companies.

I do love how popular SNK was internationally. They reached out to territories other companies didn't and reaped the benefits.

7:33, ah the Neo Geo Pocket, and the Neo Geo Pocket Color, I love that system. I've not been able to watch the last few twitch streams and have asked since the KZbin streams for Dr S.Ashen to play the Neo geo Pocket games live. If Ashens hasn't played it live yet then I eagerly await that stream, if it has been done.... Then I'm disappointed in myself for not knowing and will sacrifice my life remaining sleep time to watch it right now.

Hey Stuart there's a Limited Edition Christmas version just released (being red with two red controllers, power cable, HDMI cable, stickers, two screen protectors and a slip cushion) as well as a mixture of titles from both the Japanese and International versions, as well as a few extra titles added in for a total of 48 games. ( titles are exclusives to this version which includes The Super Spy you were talking about, League Bowling and Savage Reign. I doubt the HDMI output and controllers would have improved that much, but still interesting info. :)

Highly entertaining & informative video. Thanks for bringing to us. Used to have the original brilliance of the full size home machine back in the Nineties & played the addictively brilliant 'Nam 1975 all the time. As good / bad this little throw back is, it is not truly a Neo Geo experience without 'Nam 1975. What a shame !

But the unit by itself seems to be pretty nice. I'm tempted as I am a sucker for mini arcade cabinets. The rest can be done for cheap on any emulator box anyway.

I remember Neo Geo games were about £200 each. In 1993 pounds. The Internet says that works out to about £400 ($520ish) now. For one game.
@XrisD1476 жыл бұрын
Flippin eck! that's expensive.
@Fattydeposit6 жыл бұрын
Indeed. Pretty cheap for authentic arcade games though. Sega / Namco / Taito arcade games could easily cost 10 times that figure.
@flabini48836 жыл бұрын
@@Fattydeposit true, but that price is for the home releases
@krashd6 жыл бұрын
Which is still cheap even for home release. These games were many megabytes in size at a time when your average game was just 256KB and even read-only memory was expensive as all hell back then! You were paying for a big fat slice of state-of-the-art ROM that was several times larger than the RAM in a typical computer. If GTAV had come out at a time before DVD's, Blu-Rays and digital download it would require 130+ CD's, that is a lot of plastic that would have to be covered by the retail price...

Always annoys me that companies get away with using the truncated prop 65 warning, instead of actually listing the dodgy thing inside it. If it's due to lead solder, just put lead solder in the warning! If it's something else I'm slightly more concerned!
@IvanovIvanAKrutoi5 жыл бұрын
Maybe the microswitches caused cancer and thus were forced to put the warning on there and not put any microswitches in the unit or controllers.
@josh244415 жыл бұрын
Instead of this SNK should just make a compilation game with like 40 neo geo games. Like what sega has done. And just put it on the ps4 xbox1 steam and switch.

But yea, I totally agree that there is zero excuse for them not including the microswitches in the joystick and controllers, specially for the price of this thing. Personally I would have been completely fine if they had added the microswitches to the controllers at least and increased the price by 5 bucks.

Could possibly be a really good buy for a project build if it turns out to be hackable. Take the innards out, put em in a portable console-type case and use original neogeo controller parts and you got yourself a banger.
@Mace2.06 жыл бұрын
The original Neo Geo was too expensive (like ~$700 for the console + ~$300 for the games), but the CD alternative console was a thing, although with the cost of loading screens. The portable consoles the Neo Geo Pocket and it's color variant was also a nice piece of tech, but the games are lacking, consists mostly fighting games, some RPGs, and the first Sonic game to appear in a non-Sega platform (excl. PC ports).
@ittybittyboat90176 жыл бұрын

The NGPC is lacking? Yeah, it has few games, being on the market for such a short time, but it still has the best quality to crap ratio of any handheld console. Not many bad games (apart from those Japan only fruit machine simulators).

It has less than a hundred games (even lesser than the Vita), and around 30 games were localized.

Someone probably commented already, Metal Slug X is basically Metal Slug 2 but improved quite a bit because the original game wasn't very well optimized and X also includes stuff from Metal Slug 3 if I recall correctly. It's basically Metal Slug 2 Master Quest
