Ashenvale - Original Wow Music

Living through the evolution of 3D games was truly a blessing. Every year there would be games pressing the boundaries, doing something absolutely stunning. World of Warcraft wasn't my first MMO, but it was the only MMO which had such a vivid fantasy world, from the lore to the technical execution. Brilliant. Now only, if only we'd ever experience something like that again... I can only hope VR gets there eventually.

Oh man... Ashenvale. The memories. Funny story actually. One day I was leveling my first character (a tauren druid) throughout the Barrens, and at some point I got curious what the green looking area up ahead was. The bgm and visuals were stunning, but the mobs were far too high level for me. Then one guy called out for help in general chat, cause he got lost inside one of the barrow dens and wasn't sure where to find the exit. I offered to help even though I had no idea how. When I met him I noticed he was also a tauren druid of about the same level as me, and I was confused why he was even there. We ended up both getting more lost, but eventually we did manage to find the exit. After that we basically leveled our characters together and stayed in contact. Now, like 11 years later, he's still one of my best friends, even though he lives over 5000km away :'( (I visited him once though!)

Great times of WOW when you actually got lost and didnt know where the hell you were. I remember going with a PVP raid group, i was only lvl 18 with a whole bunch of 60s. I had no idea how to get back to Elwynn forest! lol

I remember being like level 22 as a night elf and the alliance formed a raid to attack the crossroads and i had no idea what I was doing or where i was going and the guards at one of the watchtowers were making mince meat out of the lowbies (including me). ahhhh, those were the days.

Yes especially if you were there from the very beginning, witnessing how the canvas slowly filled with all the beautiful colors as you go on your path, meeting new people, going on adventures together and exploring beautiful areas like Ashenvale. The magical music did the rest to raise you into another dimension, newer MMOs never had this feeling for me. When i look back i can only think of good memories.

I haven't played WoW properly since 2010, but god damn was this game addictive. I remember the first time I made it to this place and there was a group of level 80 Horde in ICC gear (which was damn badass back then) attacking Astranaar. Then some alliance landed, would push them back to Splintertree post which we would attack, then they'd come back to Astranaar and on and on it would go. So much fun, so many memories...

Each new character I made, I was always eager to go to Ashenvale just to start leveling up there. The trees and the music alone made me stay there for as long as it was possible. The same rule goes with Feralas or Un'Goro. Basically the devs were masters in creating those tree covered landscapes.

I can never get into any other MMO as much as WoW. Blizzard made this game with a certain charm and appeal that keeps me coming back. I have to admit that I do love SWTOR and ESO, but WoW always has me coming back to it, both for the story, the music, and the overall atmosphere. This game, despite it's rough patches, is still a masterpiece to experience as well as one of the best games I've ever played. Here's to another 10 years of World Of Warcraft!

Back when my friend and I had just started and didn't know anything about the game, we decided we would try to reach my friend's stepdad who was far up north in Eastern Kingdoms while we were in Elwynn. We got through Redridge Mountains and thought we could just run north through the lava/hellish area (Wow, it has been so long I can't even remember the name of the place). We died every other second but managed to get a long way on the path through. When we realized it wasn't going to work, we didn't try using the hearthstone for some reason so we had to die our way back down to Lakeshire again. My night elf and her human went on so many adventures together, we would explore with our cat pets and see if we could get everywhere and some of that magic disappeared when we actually COULD get everywhere with our flying mounts.

Totally agree with you. The magic and mysterious times when you needed to stack up food and water and empty the junk out of the bags, and prepare for the road cause you knew you will not be coming back to major city for a long time. Hearthstones had 1 hour CD and you better use it wisely other wise, it's a long walk back to the questing area to continue doing those quests to reach a single level. In the beginning, it would take me few days just to level ONE level up. And every tree you see on the road was mysterious, every area was scary because you don't know what's ahead of you. Yup, game was truly magical and mysterious back in the day. Flying mounts killed most of the magic and mystery!

I remember finding a way to the top of the Iron Forge Mountain way before flying mounts in Azeroth were a thing. It began by climbing behind a tree in Loch Modan, getting all the way through the mountains in the Searing Gorge, then getting all the way around the mountains in Dun Morogh, until you got to the top of Iron Forge. It took about a good half hour, you got to the edge of the rendered map, it was not designed for players to access. And yet, when you went up there, there was a lonely camp with a tent, a fire, and some dwarf sledding on his own. You couldn't see it from anywhere else, but they still left it in. That "aHA!" moment you get when exploring so much and finding something new, then bringing friends along. Those were some fine times.

I think Ashenvale is my all time fave place in wow. So beautiful and mysterious really. The Shrines, old overgrown sculptures and statues and the wicked dryads. If I was part of the alliance and I had to live and dwell a place for all eternity, Ashenvale it would be. The dungeon there, I do not recall its name anymore, was also really mysterious, also because it was so desolated, no one ever came there.

Ashenvale was mostly geared towards Alliance players, but it was much more easily accessible for Horde to reach there and there was a little to do. But Alliance had the funniest questline in the whole game in Ashenvale. The Furbolg Totem!

Since were all sharing stories - i had my first PvP experience in ashenvale. An elf started chasing me, I drank that green potion that sped you up for 30 seconds and got the hell away. My heart was pounding so fucking hard i still remember it to this day. My shaman lived to fight another day

Whatever they paid the composer and musicians for this music couldn't possibly be enough. The original soundtracks were responsible for SO MUCH of the feeling in that world... the game play wasn't bad, but these musical pieces, so mystical and deeply touching, were a huge huge part of transporting the player into the world and getting them involved. If there was any musical part in your soul at all, you felt like you entered a world with a real history.

Ashenvale... has to be one of my absolute favorite zones in all of WoW. I can so clearly remember being at my mom's house for the weekend and meeting up with my brother in this zone (I had just swapped my hunter to Alliance - but I had always been Horde before that.) He played an Undead Warlock, and we met up in Ashenvale on the road and just fought each other for hours. Lots of back and forth. He'd win, then I'd win, and over and over again for hours.. It's funny how we would spend our time when we were younger. I don't regret any of it. WoW produced some of the absolute best times in my life, both in terms of gaming and my life overall. Met some awesome people, had some amazing times. Nowadays, the old world feels pretty dead in WoW, but that doesn't stop me from going out of my way every once in a while to go around the old zones and reminisce.

Oh the memories, walking as a night elf hunter from point to point. It seemed so endless, just adventuring with friends and relatives. "Watch out horde are gathering at the entrance" - players would let us know in advance. No pvp gear, no achievements, just raw power by the numbers. Also the quests and bfd's dungeons. Good old times :D I was adventuring with my mage, around lvl 14 or such and walked north through the barrens till I found the entrance to ashenvale. I will remember that moment forever! Didnt got a clue what I would found in this zone, or what to do... After long walking I saw a village in a lake... I ran to it... and got owned by guards... after weeks I found out that it was an Alliance city... Those memories.. Damn you nostalgia :)

So many thumbs up on my commentary. Wonderful that so many are still missing the good old days. I remember I ventured into Ashenvale in late '06 at level 20 with my orc hunter. Seeing the glorious trees, this lovely music and other wonderful stuff was simply amazing. We can't make WoW go back now: things that have happened will stay like this. I just hope Blizzard does something that makes me the (wow)happy child I was when I joined WoW.

I played many games when I was younger. Crash Bandicoot, Megamen, the Monkey Island series, etc. While some of these games were fun, I'd not care to play them now naturally. Perhaps if you show me a video of one of these games it will provoke a nostalgic feeling, but nothing really compelling enough to make me want to play it. I could say the same about several other games. But I cannot say the same for something like WoW. These are masterful songs of ambiance: contemplative, epic, timeless, so amazingly appropriate to the zone that you were in. But no, a soundtrack is not enough. I am not reminded of great days listening to these great songs, I am reminded of actually being in the world itself, and the experiences I had. The soundtracks remind me of the vastness of what the world felt like. And this does not need to do necessarily with the actual virtual size of Azeroth itself. I'm sure that the combined regions of a game like SWTOR are pretty large as well, for example, but what I'm referring to is something beyond size. What made the Warcraft world feel vast to me was something involving a great many factors, all of which succeeded in making the world feel alive. Firstly, it was the naivete of the players. There were so many players, so many varieties, doing so many things. They were constantly around you too. While doing a quest, there could be some dangerous high level lurking in the shadows, another player that could perhaps become a friend, etc. In quite a way, roleplaying wasn't really a choice, it was something that was simply brought to you. The best game makes you feel that you are your character actually in this world. And that is certainly how I felt, and I didn't have a choice about it. There was a quaintness about the environment, the zones, the quests, etc. You could tell that the developers of the game took time with every little niche, every single quest. Everything had some clever little addition that made it all the more immersive. It wasn't about the quests. It wasn't even about goals. It wasn't about story either. What's the "story" of vanilla WoW? Killing Van Cleef in the deadmines? There's no story. It's not about a narrative. It's about the World itself. The quests were largely ways of showing the world to you. It's like the game was a frontier where no-one was there to hold your hand. It was the wild west, and you had to make of it what you would. We didn't play to get somewhere, we just played. We were in this world. I remember starting out and, having already played Warcraft II and III, always having this feeling that the world I'm in is such a vast & huge place, with so much more for me to explore. That's what was compelling to me--that was my "goal." I knew there was so much more, and I was excited to see it. The quests were merely a vehicle to take me there. I never cared much about them. They didn't tell a grand story. They really just involved killing boars or gathering plants. But what mattered was the journey. Long quest chains that took you all over the world and about which you wondered if anyone else had ever even done this quest since it's so long and complicated. You can point me to x and y MMO, and the reason I won't treasure it so much is because it doesn't have the quaint & youthful feeling of an ambitious young company passionate about every small part of their world. It's not because of "nostalgia." I certainly feel nostalgia for WoW, but it's not the nostalgia itself that makes the thing so compelling. You only pretend to believe that because it's convenient, because it justifies a mindset that allows you to act in a certain way. You want to make yourself believe that it's just nostalgia and you seemingly force yourself to try to appreciate other games as much. Like a great work of art, WoW was a masterpiece. I would read Lord of the Rings over and over again not because of nostalgia, but because it is great. I would play Rome Total War over and over again not because of nostalgia, but because it is great. I would play vanilla WoW over and over again not because of nostalgia, but because it is great.

God I love the pre-cata version of this zone so much. I remember me and my friends would roll up here every Saturday night and wreak havoc on the Astranaar NPCs. That'd bait a few 60s and we'd eventually get smashed. Come back with more people and before you knew it a massive shitstorm kicked up for good few hours. I'm 20 now, but this game was such a big part of my life during my childhood. The pure nostalgia of this music just brings back a pure feeling of being a kid, so much happiness I could literally cry just thinking back to playing this game with this music on... When you're a gaming company looking for minds that are so well-versed, such absolute creative EXPERTS in the creation of atmosphere-matching pieces like they have in WoW (specifically Ashenvale), where do you even start? Was it by sheer dumb luck they came across the composers that created these absolutely masterful pieces? Couldn't be. These pieces are absolutely original. Someone's mind witnessed these WoW environments, maybe factored in some Night Elf lore, and what you're listening to is what came out. This is pure genius creativity. You couldn't pay most people $100 Million to come up with something this heartfelt, genuinely creative, and just plain amazing.

Ashenvale is one of the most memorable place for me in WoW. That's Where I first see conflict between Alliance and Horde. I remember seeing a tauren killing alliance NPCs in Ashenvale, but I couldn't help at all! I was on a PVE server back ten, but I didn't really understand the concept of it. LOL. It was long time after that I realized it's a mission for the horde. Good old times.

loved this zone, definitely one of the top for myself. this tanaris and azshara.... those elvan peoples sure know a thing or two about aesthetics. when i first entered this zone, walking through it i was completely absorbed by the atmosphere and music.....a game does not need high end graphics to be exceptional, just give enough of an impression and your mind will do the rest.

In 20 years or even more, when all of us young WoW players are like 50 and 60 years old, or even 80, we will look back at a video like this, and truly reminisce and talk about the awesome memories of being a noob back in Dun Morogh and how epic it was to climb the huge slope up to the Huge entrance of Ironforge and when you walked inside there were TONS of people. WoW is and always will be an epic game. T_T

I remember Ashenvale when playing as a night elf. So magical! Just walking through it felt like an immense feeling. Then doing quests, starting at one end, and slowly getting to part where you battled those orcs that tried to ruin YOUR forest! You can't help it, but you will feel attached to this place, and seeing it being destroyed... You can't replicate this feels in every game :)

This music is the very heart of what WoW once were... the feeling you had when you ran around and did all those quests in Ashenvale is hard to beat... I fail to see the epicness in beating a 25-man heroic raid.... this is the pure epicness that Blizzard totally forgot about... The very core of the game. The feeling it brought when playing. A zone I will never forget. Went here the first time on my night elf druid back in Wrath. It was such a relief leaving the dark depressing Darkshore and seeing a place with bright light again. Reminded me a lot of Teldrassil only much more dangerous and exciting. Was the first time I ever experienced sharing a zone with the opposite faction. I'll never forget when I ran too close to Splintertree Post and got 1 shotted by the lvl 40 guards the very 1st time.

This and the Teldrassil music remind me of my friend Drew and I making back to back 10 day trial accounts back at the beginning of Wrath until we finally both got the game, making Night Elf Hunters each time and leveling them and then being so excited when we got to level 10 so we could do the quest line to get the hunter pets! Listening to the Teldrassil music and hearing a Nightsaber's rawr as it was attacking us and finally hearing it die. The best days... He got the actual game first, which was okay I guess, cause I got it soon after, but I got so jealous when he got to level thirty and got his mount, when I was level who knows what and had to use Aspect of the Cheetah to get to where our destination was. It was a lot more fun running and riding our ground mounts places instead of just flying over all of the beautiful scenery and a possible chance of some PvP action. We would get so scared and try and hide when we saw a person with a skull. A lot of the times that destination was the Barrens. Going through the broken gates to the east side of the guard tower just gave me the biggest rush. Raiding and killing whatever we can. It was the best feeling finding and killing a low level orc who was flagged for PvP. Oh, how I hated the Horde. My heart belongs to the Alliance. We play to this day, but, nothing, nothing will ever bring back the same excited feelings as were felt when him and I first started playing. This was the place to be. But, "It's not an adventure anymore, it's a game. Nothing more."

I remember Ashenvale very well. I had a Night Elf Hunter and loved the game very much. I had to put the game down in 2006 because of that reason. Every other facet of my life came secondary. Even being a single guy with a great career and no kids it was consuming my existence. I miss it but Ill never pick it up again. I missed out on alot of real life as a result of it. I really am happier without it.

Teldrassil, the nurturing. Darkshore, the confused adolescence and Ashenvale a confident sentinel. I understand that the Kaldorei lived way longer than the timeline would allow for this to happen to each individual, however each zone, and each music in its linear and chronological order, as the player moved through was quite wonderfully done.

I've been Horde since Vanilla came out, seeing the game for the first time was so amazing. weather your horde or alliance we all had that wonderful feeling, its just that we had them in certain different places at certain different times... i really wish i could have experienced both. i always made Ally toons just to hear the music w/o being chased by guards.

One of my favorite zones pre-Cataclysm. I (think) I still have the Dartol's Rod of Transformation that turned you into a furbolg, the one you get from a quest here. There wasn't a lot of stuff like that in vanilla so using it to confuse people was a ton of fun, and you got to keep it forever if you didn't finish the quest.

My first character I made was a human priest. When I traveled for the first time to Kalimdor and entered Ashenvelle, I fell in love with the music, the enviroment and the peace I felt. Then I made a NE hunter, (in the time when hunters had to tame their pets at level 10, when pets were real and needed to be fed and keep them happy), just to be part of that land. I don't know what happened to that toon.

Oh boy do I remember this soundtrack. When I first joined Wow (Not as early as most of you) I was a Night elf, the first starting zone was so fun and the music there is also stuck in my head... But... I didn't know what a quest was... for 24 lvls. I would stand around Darkshore killing mobs (Another fav area till Deathwing destroyed it) and when I finally got to Ashenvale I would kill the Furbolgs next Astranaar. I was such a noob. Good old days when I didn't know everything about the game. x3
