The fact that the song starts with a metronome says so much about the way he felt in these years. The sound keeps going without him being able to fill that sound with other instruments, for so long. But then, hope comes.

This song's lyrics are so emotional yet it's upbeat because, as others have said, Porter said this song was about his struggle to write music since the success of Worlds and him finding his reasoning for making music again. It makes me emotional listening to it because it's like he just went back to his roots and made a song that *made him happy* rather than *making other people happy* and you can feel the passion.

👀 I've been listening to Porter since before Language (from around Easy/Spitfire) and I have to say its weird to hear people say this is the style he's known for. The man solidified complextro as a subgenre and popularised Wolfgang Gartners style for me.

Man, I love it when you react to my fav artists' songs.. Been following you since a while now, loved your Madeon - AMF reaction too.. Even your reaction comes when the hype goes slightly down, when people aren't that active on the internet, but instead listening to that songs to treat themselves.. And I think that's completely unintended, but a really great coincidences.. After watching your reactions, I discover and learn more about the songs and production.. Also I think I start loving the songs more.. Thank you and keep posting these lit reactions..!!

in my perspective Virtual self & this porter right now, it's just like different style. Like alter-ego And what porter want to show to us, as 'porter robinson' it's music like this. And that's why porter create virtual self He is finally found the sound, The chord progression The vibe that defines how he was Sure world it's his recently best album by far and his turning point But Shelter single is transcended his music into next level. And he want to keep that as 'Porter Robinson'. And I bet this will be his whole album vibe. fuck I can't wait till the release

Soooo good! God it’s an amazing song and what a unique music video. The only complaints I have about the production are the muddy mix (which was for sure an artistic choice because we know how clean and clear his mixes can be) and the shaker in the drop. To be honest though, the mixing choices are starting to grow on me already. It’s unique. But the shaker is just quite high, especially on nicer headphones. I think he went a bit far with distorting it possibly? To keep that low fidelity feel? Not a deal-breaker by any means, but I’d like to see how the song holds up without the shaker being so harsh or with the volume lower. Loved your point about the song being huge without having a crazy wall-of-sound! Really interesting.
@up75005 жыл бұрын
Muddy? Do you really mean dense? In a world where most modern EDM is super clean and clear sounding I found the production to be a breath of fresh air. Raw and human sounding with bags of energy.
@surmaster46185 жыл бұрын
My theory: Honestly, the first time I heard this song, it was underwhelming and it really made me think that Porter really is going through Artist Block due to the fact that it didn’t suffice to Shelter for me. But then as I listened to it more, it grew on me and it’s pretty darn beautiful and catchy. Ultimately, it’s coincidental how this song really is about the struggle of him writing his music due to artist block. Beautiful how the message transcends through the vibe of the song 💎
@hangloosetjt5 жыл бұрын
UP yeah dense/muddy, I personally have a hard time finding a huge differentiation between the two. But you’re right, it’s all mixed well and the basses don’t clash with the mids, etc. It just feels dense and pushed together. I agree I think that’s what he was going for. More of what you’d expect from a band who recorded live, or without amazing equipment. Gives me the feeling a garage punk band recording would. Which is really interesting and gives the song a unique feel. That’s why I said that part is growing on me. Although I can’t say I like that style more than clean and clear yet. Listening back to the massive airy drops of Flicker, Shelter, etc, it’s hard to compare them because the mixing styles are quite different.
@hangloosetjt5 жыл бұрын
The Innovator I definitely think this more intimate and bedroom-producer (for lack of a better describer) feel was perfect for the meaning of this song :)
@surmaster46185 жыл бұрын
Tj Tamura very true, another critique I want to add is that I didn’t want him to distort his voice into a female. I wanted to hear his authentic pure masculine voice. The high-pitched distorted female voice felt inauthentic to me. I still love Porter though & this song (:

The main part of this specific vocal effect is formant shifting (very good to turn male vocals into female-ish). He pitched up his voice also, about 400 cents i'd say. Formant shifting is needed though, that's why he doesn't sound like chipmunk by only shifting up the pitch
@ttroyscarrlett5 жыл бұрын
@@guesswhaaat8006 Formant shifting you say? I'll be sure to check that out, thanks!
@ttroyscarrlett5 жыл бұрын
@@guesswhaaat8006 In extension, it sounds like he layered the vocals. The vocals sound almost vocoded, and then he layers them with the same vocals with maybe a slight difference in pitch, and made them slightly offbeat. Sort of like how if you copy a sample pan the original to the left and the copy to the right, and then slightly put one later than the other you get more of a stereo effect, which he also might've used...
