Drummer and Ashford together are next level. Such a chemistry! They do not need a romance to be the best couple in the show.

I loved Ashford because his single act did more to legitimize the belters than anything else. He had power to save people and he chose to do it. His relationship with Drummer is amazing. Also in the books Anna is high as a kite on pain killers and you hear her thinking about how insane her choice was as she's going through the ring space chasing Melba.

I love the dramatic reveal that Dr. Rev. Anna followed Melba to the Roci, but we miss out on her freaking out on the way over there; her first time in an EVA suit, first time in a deep space walk, hopped up on painkillers realizing that she's following a psychotic killer through what could be interpreted as hell. She's literally the best character on the show.

I’m not sure precisely why but Drummer’s line “I was wrong. All the optimists I know are not dead,” has stuck with me since I first heard it. It’s a line which resonates and I’m happy to let it.

David Strathairn and Cara Gee gave so much emotional weight to the Ashford/Drummer scenes in this episode. Come for the space action, stay for the powerful acting.

Two actors who took material which had already been elevated from its source and made it even better, to the point that it altered the initially intended arcs of their characters. I don’t think people will ever really know just what they did and how effortless they made it look.

"Ashford has stolen my heart!" Yeah, he does that :). Not a flawless man but an incredible character. (and yet again we see another reason this show is so good - it manages its ensemble with such apparent ease. Even in an episode with so much going on and a focus on Ashford and Drummer, _every_ main character still gets their moment to shine)

The dilemma for the oppressed is trust. You get betrayed enough times, you can lose the capacity--but we humans are always stronger as a team, and you can't have a team without trust. For me, this is one of the best and most moving episodes of the series for them trying to hash that out.

So the purple glow is basically a forcefield that stopped any object, ship or otherwise, that exceeded the "speed limit". And Simu Liu's detonation of a grenade inside the protomolecule station convinced the automated defenses that the speed limit needed to be significantly lowered. So every ship in the "slow zone" or "ring space" or whatever you want to call it, essentially ran into an invisible brick wall instantly. Which resulted in A LOT of deaths. Also, it's very interesting that you said you'd love an Expanse spin-off about Ashford! The Expanse is a show that is literally OVER-FLOWING with awesome side characters!! I've always felt like that, and most of them, I'd GLADLY watch watch a spin-off series about!!! So you're thinking the same as me in this department!! :D

Dunno if you've figured this out yet or not, but the speed limit changed because Lieutenant Shang Chi fired a grenade at the thing in the station which told it that slow moving things can be dangerous too, not because of anything Holden did.

The Martian thought Holden might have been controlling the Ring Sphere...yet wanted to kill him. No logic. Just before Holden leaped from the Roci, his wrist display showed they were moving very slowly (relatively speaking), so Amos and Alex survived. "You changed your hair." Naomi in the books had an unfortunate psychological quirk that had her frequently hiding nervously behind her long hair. That quirk was wisely removed from the series, but they still gave it a nod by having her drastically change her hairstyle every season. Amos is a man of no subcontexts; when he says, "Okay," he means okay. Look very closely in the first seconds of the next episode to see the technical explanation of Melba's physical modifications.

Just to explain what is happening with all the ships stuck and being stopped abruptly. The space inside the rings has security measures. One specifically deals with the speed of things that can cause harm. When they entered the ring the speed limit was set at something like 18760 km/ second or hour(can't remember which). This was the speed of the last thing that caused it physical harm. That's why the bullets Bobbie shot at Holden stopped. When the MCRN guy threw the grenade it caused the station harm from something moving at a much slower speed; the shrapnel of the grenade. This changed the speed inside the ring space to that speed, which is why everything stopped. Causing terrible things to happen. Hope that makes sense.

Great reaction! The chemistry between Ashford and Drummer is just amazing! I never knew I needed this duo!! Naomi coming back to the Rocinante and helping her family! The limited conversation between Amos and Naomi was small but very very powerful! The scene with Anna and Tilly was very emotional, especially with the tears floating. Looking forward to the next one!

Anna was hopped up on painkillers when she went after Melba. She might not have done it otherwise. But I think that she is the best depiction of a religious leader that I would want to see. She is firm in her faith but very gentle and kind with everyone…unless they hurt her friend. Even then she just wanted to stop any more damage from Melba rather than going after her for revenge.

The Behemoth, nee Nauvoo, was meant to be a generation ship, so it has a huge rotating drum that can generate spin gravity - like a centrifuge, or like how a playground roundabout tries to throw you off.

I’d love to see more of an open-world (open-system?) flyer/shooter with a strong story for him. Chronicles of the Ghost Knife, if you will. If I had a billion dollars, I’d have a trilogy of games made: “Young Klaes” / “Captain Ashford” / “Tragedy of the Ghost Knife” They’d lead all the way up to his introduction on the show. Is that a pipe-dream? Sure. But, a man can dream, ke?

The station only “sees “ the ships when it dropped the speed limit. But doesn’t take into account anything on the inside of the ships.

If you like these details about how zero-g looks on screen, you should check out Apollo 13 if you haven't already. It has a bunch of scenes ACTUALLY shot in zero-g. The actors are weightless because the set was in one of those zero-g parabolic flight planes. It is a great film that does a pretty good job portraying the events of that fateful true story.

Seconded Apollo 13, and not because the zero-G scenes are great but because it's an excellent film about persevering in the face of overwhelming odds.

@@mscheese000 Well yeah, of course all that. There is also the cast, and score, great special effects, etc. But from a film making standpoint... they ACTUALLY did zero-g. I just still think that is really cool.

the religious symbolism and chosen one are strange takes. not seeing that at all. i thought the point has always been to show them working together and that they need everyone from different backgrounds to succeed, not only within their own regions, but also the larger earther/martian/belter

It's funny how much disliked the novel Ashford is in contrasts to the show's Ashford . The showrunner , director and David Strathairn himself really elevated this character beyond the source material made him to be. And then there's Drummer. We all already know the difference between novels' '" Drummer" and the show's version.
@Johmpa

The authors of the books were heavily involved in the show and wrote a bunch of the scripts. If I recall correctly the changes to Ashford was partly them adapting the character to the media format and the actor and partly them recognising he is amazing and deserves to play an amazing character.
