I think the word 'crazy' for women especially, can be particularly insensitive due to centuries of patriarchal indoctrination, where women were called crazy for holding men accountable. And also for - as you mentioned - being this insane trope of ex-girlfriend etc. And it's heavily rooted in misogyny. It truly depends on the context and who says it for me tho

Quick note on crazy, I worked as a mental health therapist in an inpatient setting where my clients either had schizophrenia or bipolar disorder to with psychotic features. They have been called crazy in the most horrible derogatory way, so for them it was an offensive word. And out of respect to them, and to anyone who might be watching and might have also had that word used against them in a negative way, I try to be mindful of not saying it.
@houndgirl73652 жыл бұрын
Honestly I agree. My now ex found out she has chemical depression. When I was with her she would call herself crazy, but I would always correct her and tell her she was expressing herself how she could. Emotionally she was somewhat stunted from how she was raised not being able to properly express herself. Sometimes she would raise her voice and I would do my very best to sit her down and ask her what was wrong. Overall I think what people need to understand is sometimes these people need patience, understanding, and yes some need chemical help. Crazy they are not it's just a chemical embalance, trauma, or both.I wish people understood that. Overall we are all human and no one is perfect thats why your commentary really hits those feelings, because all people deserve understanding and care.

I got told I am "crazy" for my meltdowns or panick attacks. 25 years into life I got the answer that I am autistic and these are all valid things and telling people they are "crazy" for not being neurotypical is not a vibe.
@lizhyink56362 жыл бұрын
Yeah, well said. I worked in an ER with people in mental health crisis, and had also been previously motivated to get educated on mental health advocacy after seeing how stigma effected loved ones who inherited different conditions and/or neurodivergent brains, and experiencing my own. Understanding emotional regulation while also practicing emotional validation might help build a more compassionate world.

There's also other mental illnesses that have symptoms that are both more likely to look like the "crazy" that you say is a separate thing, and more likely to be exacerbated by being invalidated by being called crazy. (Saying this as someone who's watched a loved one spiral because of this) Anyways it's about context of use, like you said. If no one is being invalidated or directly harmed then it shouldn't be a big deal.

Thank you for the thoughtful discussion regarding plenty of stuff, including lazy dismissal/ weaponizing mental illness stigma. This was a humorous and humanizing conversation. Abby McEnany and Mae Martin also shared their heart-warming, compassion-inspiring vulnerability. Hopefully when people do so, it invites everyone to maybe accept themselves, too.
@lizhyink56362 жыл бұрын
^ To be fair, people also deserve privacy to maintain whatever they're comfortable with. That's why it's such a gift when people share stories. ( Also, the two comedians mentioned above have each explained that they learned from past experiences, and included some aspects as lessons of what-not-to-do, as well as examples of choices that worked out better.)

As someone who has been called crazy in a derogatory way due to symptoms of my mental illnesses, I can see both sides of it. And I’m only speaking for myself here, but I think context is important. If someone is obviously in distress or causing harm to themselves or others I don’t think it is ever okay to call them crazy because there is clearly something going on there that needs to be addressed with care and compassion, not stigmatized and shamed. However, it is hard to come up with an adjective to describe crazy ENERGY- chaotic is pretty close, all over the place, wild, something you just can’t wrap your head around or understand. I think it is a really fine line that can easily be crossed into being offensive and contributing to mental health stigma at times, so I try not to use it, but I also understand why people use the word and only find it offensive based on context. I do know that there are lots of people who genuinely do find any use of it offensive though, and those feelings should be taken into account.
@pneuma62022 жыл бұрын
I kinda agree. Like if I had a friend that did some absolutely uh, crazy shit.... like stole my car, and crashed it in a few parked cars. Like, just because they could, or they were angry, or because they chose to drunk drive... I'm calling them crazy - they will be my crazy ex friend lmao. Now if someone had a psychotic episode and didn't know what they were doing, I'm going to be more compassionate about it. I'd say they were having an episode with their mental health and wrecked my car. Like I feel crazy is for people who are acting foolish by choice, and actual mental illness should be looked at with more compassion. And I'd also like to point out, as someone who does struggle with mental illness, that mental illness isn't a blanket that protects all criticism of bad behavior. Like people can still CHOOSE to do shitty things despite being mentally ill. Like if someone steals from me because of their substance abuse disorder, I will be more empathetic than someone who steals from me, was totally aware of what they were doing, but just happens to be bipolar... but it had nothing to do with stealing from me. So if they'd sneak into my room and steal a bunch of my clothing just because they liked them - That's being crazy. I use crazy for shitty behavior

Mostly because when I was in elementary to middle school people would call me crazy for me just being a extrovert ADHD kid and I understand how bad it change my self-appreciation for myself,I could not stop hating myself for not being “normal” but crazy, and I would second guess every decision I did thinking is this a crazy thing, should I not do this, even though it was like a simple task.
