Fun fact of things inspired by this movie: James Cameron cited Hayao Miyazaki and "Princess Mononoke" as an inspiration for his "Avatar." Movies

A lot of hate is really geared towards Lady Eboshi in this reaction when the story tells us that she’s a very conflicting character rather than to be considered as “she’s the worst”. Eboshi destroys nature, which of course is bad. However she takes care of people even when others in society don’t. She bought the contract of every prostitute and gave them free will and gives them respect while the men in that same town don’t respect them. She views people with leprosy as humans deserving of emotion and jobs, and gives them sanctuary when people in the world will leave them to rot. She taught women and the sick how to defend themselves in a world that’s against them. And one of her goals to kill the Forest Spirit is in hopes that it will cure diseases on people who are suffering. So I wouldn’t consider her to be the absolute worst.

4:28 - "Reminds me of Inuyasha for some reason." "Yeah, yeah, absolutely." That alone made me so happy, and kinda hit me in the face in that I realized why I love both so much, they're very similar in some ways lol. Great reaction! Always wonderful to see appreciate for this movie. One of the best Ghibli has ever made.

The people in orange in Princess Mononoke are leprosy patients. At that time, they were discriminated and persecuted on the grounds that they had done bad deeds in their previous lives or that they were cursed to have the disease. This is why there seems to be a wall between the villagers and the patients. Even sharing meals with them was avoided because of the curse and the unclean blood that could be passed on. Also, the official pamphlet distributed at movie theaters stated that Lady Eboshi was sold into slavery when she was young, but killed her husband and ran away. Some fans have whispered that Sun's mother is actually Lady Eboshi.

@@brosnshows it has not been “officially” stated or anything like that (I don’t think it has anyway), but if you see gameplay of it it’s obvious it’s been heavily inspired by the film, even cut scenes in the game look like scenes from the film.

Princess Mononoke is one of the immortal masterpieces in the history of Japanese cinema, and has been loved by many Japanese people ever since it was first shown in movie theaters in 1997, and is known by everyone from nursery school children to 100 year olds walking with canes. To begin with, Ghibli's animated works are very beloved in Japan, especially among Japanese under the age of 50 who grew up watching anime, and everyone knows most of the dialogues by heart. Among them, Princess Mononoke is particularly popular. The opening and closing scenes, the scene where Ashitaka leaves his home village and starts his journey, running across grasslands and rivers, the scene of the early morning fog as he heads west to find the forest where the old sprites live, and the scene where Ashitaka, now fully healed from his injuries, discusses with Moro, the wolf sprit who raised San, are all well-known to Japanese people. The song that appears in the scene where Ashitaka, who has recovered from his injuries, discusses the situation with Moro, the wolf spirits who raised San, is a very popular song in Japan, so much so that many people say, "The lyrics were short or there were no lyrics. The lyrics may be short or absent, but for some reason this song is very moving and uplifting to us Japanese. It is now our second national anthem. Indeed, when this song is played or sung at music festivals and choral concerts, the Japanese people's elation is passionate. (Incidentally, similarly, many people call it Japan's second national anthem, such as Haruyo koi by Yumi Matsutoya, Sakura sung solo by Naotaro Moriyama, Kataritugu koto by Hajime Chitose, and Shima Uta by THE BOOM, a famous song about the tragedy that occurred in Japan at the end of World War II due to the Allied attack, set to a gentle but sad tone.) And, by the way, the name "A demon," which is translated in English as "a sprite transformed into a hideous form due to hatred of humans," does not mean a demon if translated correctly in Japanese, but rather a sprite that spreads a curse around it, or a sprite that is swallowed by a curse that only amplifies its hatred. The original Japanese name is "demon". It feels more natural to call them cursed sprits. Or the disease-obsessed sprits of curses. That's what it means in Japanese. The original Japanese word is 祟り神(tatari gami) =祟り(tatari.originally from a good or honest person, the feeling of hating or cursing someone became a strong force) + 神(gami.a variant of kami, the word for "sprits"). It is a completely different word from "demon," which means a creature that was born with evil feelings from the beginning and has not changed mentally since then. So, as a Japanese, I felt a little uncomfortable with the English translation. In the Japanese sense, when the characters around them are struggling to return to their original character and temperament (when they know there is a solution or believe in the possibility, even if it takes only a short time to return to normal), it seems a bit hasty to call them demons, and I feel sorry for spirits who are called such. If you think of a curse like a disease, no matter how hard you try to prevent the disease, sometimes you will get sick, and it's not caused by the person in question. So whether it is a person or an animal, when they get sick, I feel sorry for them, I want them to get back to normal and get well soon, and I am not in the mood to call people or animals that were not bad to begin with demon. Calling them demons and their spirits is a long way from such Japanese concepts and traditional ways of thinking. I feel sorry for these spirits because if they are called like this, it is as if they have given up on the idea that they can no longer be saved and cannot be restored. If possible, I wish the translator would have thought of some other way to call it that would be more comfortable. Well, in Japan, tatari gami is abbreviated as 荒御魂(ara mitama) =荒 (ara, an abbreviation of araarashii or araaburu, meaning violent or coarse. In this case, it means that the person has lost self-control or memory for a period of time due to the shock of encountering a sad event such as an incident or accident, and is raging). + 御(mi, a word added at the beginning of a word to show respect. Sometimes it is also read as o or gyo or go) +魂(tama, abbreviation of tamasii, meaning soul, spirit, or mind.) or koujin = 荒(kou.desolate) + 神(jin ,a kanji character meaning god or spirits). Sometimes we call it koujin or ara mitama. There are many ways to call them, but in the end, tatari gami=ara mitama=koujin=originally they have different personalities, but now they are spirits who have temporarily lost their rationality and are raging because they have encountered some sad event. If the translation of tatarigami was difficult, it would have been easier to translate it into English in the sense of koujin or ara mitama.

Princess Mononoke takes place in Japan between 1336 to 1573. Although it appears to be a happy ending, Japan then enters the Sengoku period, and wars ensue for approximately 140 years (1467 to 1615).
