Thank you so much! I either saw this bird or a similar last week. I was completely baffled! The id of dark morph rough legged!!! Awesome. I was so confused because it was doing that sharp v and gliding and hovering so it could not have been a vulture and the body was too much like a hawk and it went so high up. There were a group of crows chasing it didn't like that it was hanging around and forced it to go higher. It really had me confused and stumps and it wasn't until I saw this video that it all make sense

I wonder if that's what I saw recently I'll try and keep an eye out for it now that I know what to look for I was kind of confused when I saw something similar

Saw two immature goshawks, one adult coopers hawks and two sharpshinned hawks in just 4hrs. A mini accipiter migration. Lost count of the marsh hawks.

You pretty much study birds your whole life and you finally get to learn species that you've never learned before and then they start changing the names. I wonder if this will do harm to the histories already established. I don't think the names should be changed in order to protect the histories

Lots of taxonomic changes recently too that involve some name changes. Frequent birders will probably be able to keep up with it, but for beginners trying to use a mix of older and newer resources it can be confusing.
