I HAVE an art degree, I went to school and everything, but I’m not an active artist nor did I learn how to make my place in the art world or even how to make art from my degree so I also consider myself to be self taught. You really don’t need a degree to be good at your job or your craft.
@AshleighKing2 жыл бұрын
That’s well said! At some point every artist must dedicate time to improving their skills on their own even after they get an art degree. Thanks for your perspective!
@Moood0072 жыл бұрын
Exactly! If you don’t actually put in the time and work even with 100 degrees you won’t make your place in the art world, it’s all about building up your art and practicing consistently, but it’s totally possible to make your mark it’s just a question of time.

I can confidently say that I learned more from KZbin and taking a few courses with professionals, than I did in University. I had a degree in FA, but knew nothing about painting, how to use mediums properly let alone how to approach galleries or get into shows. The institution I went to was all about concept and the big 'idea.' I was at a large art show in Toronto earlier in the year and the number of self-taught artists blew my mind with their work. You paint better than I do, by the way. Never give up. Do you like Mitchell Albala - sorry if I mispelled that, but your style reminds me of his! All the best :]

Your videos really inspire me! The quality of the shooting, transitions, poems - everything is done with quality and taste. I draw mostly in electronic drawing, but I like to observe traditional drawing. Also, I'm interested to know what it's like to be an artist in a place other than where I live. In my space, the profession of an artist is not the most prosperous occupation. But looking at these videos, I believe in myself more. Thank you for being here.
@AshleighKing2 жыл бұрын
That’s so kind! Thank you so much 😊 being an artist definitely has a negative stigma in more places/cultures than others. In my experience it’s more accepted in American culture. For my Asian culture upbringing its not as acceptable, but in the end it’s most important to believe in yourself and focus on improving yourself 😊 wishing you the best!

I love how you seamlessly cut from your painting to the environment. I don’t know exactly how to word it, but I think that it works so well because of your style of painting, because you aren’t painting it in a photorealistic kind of way, but you are painting it in a way where you are capturing the vibe or the aura or the feel of the environment in your painting. So when you add the music and give those establishing shots, and then I’m looking at your painting, your painting kind of looks like how it feels to see the marshland. I hope that makes sense. I really like it Ashleigh, it’s like you can capture how a place makes you feel in your painting.

Like lots of others, I too got an art centered degree, so I had to take a lot of art classes as pre reqs, (for interior design) but it didn’t really teach me a ton about art, but it definetly pushed me to create more and try lots of new mediums because I had firm deadlines. Having time based practice is really essential I think. It’s the age old question of “is the painting/drawing really ever done? At some point, you have to call it and start something new or you never really learn when you just futz around with the same piece forever. Ya gotta move on and try new things and make more things. You can always go back later to something, but knowing when it’s time to stop and start something new is really important and sooo hard for me sometimes. Anyways this was a lovely video and so soothing to watch!! Thank you!!!

Beautiful video Ashleigh. The reason I watch your channel is because of the honest way in which you describe your development. Great to see young painters struggle and battle artistic problems until they break through. It is amazing how one successful piece and all the problems you solve in the process, stay with you for life. I can look back at a painting I did 10 years ago and instantly pick out the exact things I learned making it. Keep it going Ashleigh, the reason no one thinks they can create original work is because they give up after a year or two. Originality is inevitable if one persists for decades - you will see! Very soon you will get tired of photo reference and desire to take your paintings to a higher level = that is combining live nature and your imagination. This will happen naturally when you don’t have to concentrate so hard on values, drawing etc. Once again I appreciate your honest approach. 🧠😉👌🏽
@crisalidathomassie18112 жыл бұрын
Ashley all three paintings are impressive. Definitely, you are a brave woman to go out an paint in plen air. I have thought about it but I haven’t done it yet. Each video is a great improvement and anytime you want to compare your work or yourself just compare it within yourself. How are you doing today compare to where we’re you a year ago will give you much satisfaction. You are unique and no one else will do what you do at the level of commitment you put in each video. Each day is a new day and you have successfully accomplished more by practicing, experimenting and giving your art the time it deserves. It is different for each individual. Just keep going and keep painting. Your future is bright and it has much more surprises for you. Thanks for each inspirational, calming and promising video. Much love, success and many blessings for each day.

Hi Ashleigh! I graduated from a high school about art this year and waiting for art colleges' exams. One thing I can guarentee is that you can be a great master without a degree too. Honestly, my school was in a little town and wasn't very developed so I didn't learn much from the school. All I did was to work, research, study on these and repeat. I hope to improve even more by the years pass. I want to say, we can do this! Human being is a weird creation tbh lol. We can get everything we want once we believe and work, that's how I believe and experience. And since I started my YT channel too, I'm learning so much from you about videos, camera angles etc. So thank you and always stay safe!

Beautiful work. The paintings, AND the video itself. The scenery, the music, even the bit of poetry at the beginning, brilliantly put together! Plus, you get extra points for using the phrases "Secluded Beach," "Deserted Island," and "Abandoned Research Facility" all together without being a Sci-Fi Channel movie! Seriously though, I'm an acryllic man myself, but their relatively quick drying time has always made outdoor painting problematic (at least for me). Do you find oil paints lend themselves better to plein air painting? Excellent Video As Always.👏👏👏👏
@AshleighKing2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! I really appreciate your encouraging comments! Haha I love a good sci-fi movie so that might’ve been an influence 😅 Yeah the quick drying time is why I tend to stay away from acrylics. Oils are definitely better suited to plein air painting! Definitely try it out if you can 😊

Can I say that I like them all equally? I was a little concerned that 30 minutes might be too long to hold attention, but you did a great job (as usual) of keeping me engaged. In fact, I was not even aware of how much time had passed when the last musical accompaniment began. It was a beautiful piece, but made me a little sad because it had the feel of closure and saying "good-bye for now." It made for a bitter-sweet ending. I will definitely have to watch this one through again, and will be looking forward to what your creative genius serves up next ❤❤

Art is one of the few things you don't need a degree for. I only went because I needed in person instruction to help me, but I really hadn't gotten anything tangible or truely helpful to making art. (Save my first drawing class) I legit did whatever I had previously, or learned from youtube artists I follow. I didn't get technique tips or anything like that that I didn't already know by figuring out or seeing online. I dropped out in what would be right before the beginning of my 3rd year. Only regret so far is that I've been so busy trying to make money to help my mom with bills (writing since I haven't found how to make money off my work/no one's been vocally interested in my work) that I haven't gotten to sit and practice my skills or even attempt to learn a new medium.
