0:41-1:08 ''No you aren't my son, you aren't the son I wanted...' Goosebumps, pure Osar winning performance here and very hilling to watch here. Particularly striking too because Dot is always level headed, compassionate and forgiving towards others especially Nick so it's rare to see her so angry, condemn others and speak harsh truth and so from the heart. It's great insight into her character as we see that beneath the veneer of the kind and gentle woman she is that she too is human and harbours anger, resentment and bitterness just like the rest of us. In essence the scene shows her humanity. Even in her been bound to Christianity and forgiveness towards the sinner she too has her limits which the writers expose brilliantly here. I no longer watch EastEnders but I did like the duality and dimensions they added to characters like that. Another being Grant Mitchell, how he was often the loutish bully and cruel bad boy fill of narcissism and his own self importance. Yet on rare occasions he showed compassion and support for others like when he was the only one to support Mark Fowler when he had AIDS or how he supported Nigel after the death of his wife.

I uttered Mark's phrase ''Some people you're just glad to see the back of'' when my former best friend who turned nasty and treated me like dirt for an uncomfortable length of time finally got into his car and drove away out of where we lived and ultimately out of my life. That was more than eleven years ago and I haven't seen him since.

Watched this on its original broadcast: still a powerful scene after all these years. Probably the best that EastEnders had been for a long time. Flashbacks to Eddie Royle's murder, the poisoning plot etc. whilst Dot was talking would've reinforced to the audience, especially the long term ones from 1985, her finally reaching the end of her tether with Nick.

Short sighted decision to kill off Nick, and now with June’s passing there is no family connection at all for Dotty’s character except Rocky, a character that no one cares about.
@shanefolan9175 Жыл бұрын
I don't agree, there's only so many times you an bring back a villain before it becomes farce. Even in some of Grant Mitchell comebacks the writing was heavily criticised for being poor and out of touch with his character. They'd done everything with Nick, his character was spent.
@MJN_SEIFER6 жыл бұрын
I genuinely thought that was it for Nick back in the day, like this was the end of his storyline. Looking back, I don't know why I thought that - he's obviously not the character to turn good, and he's clearly the kind of character who keeps going until he dies, which is what happened. I guess because Dot was done with him, and he'd done something he genuinely felt bad about (Ashely was never meant to die, Nick's intended target was Mark) it seemed like a good place to end his storyline back then. He doesn't turn good (would any of his fans even want him to?), but he crosses the line and shows the only amount of remorse he'll ever show, and finds that he won't be forgiven ever again - his days of having his "Ma" to fall back on are over, and we can use our own imaginations to decide what kind of (most likely evil) things he's doing now.

What i dont understand is why Dot fell for Nick's lies again when he turned up later with his daughter Dotty/Kirsty.
@MrPerfect2000Z6 жыл бұрын
Because she is too eager to see the good in people and because Nick always had a kid with him so she'll put up with him for the sake of her grand child. That's the reason you can come up with for Dotty. Charlie's old enough to know better (and he does know better)
@captaincorleone70885 жыл бұрын
The same reason why she tried to look out for Donna when everyone else had shunned her, the same reason why she gave away her winnings to strangers and the same reason that over the years, even when Dot *knew Nick was lying and was involved in misdeeds* she gave him another chance, because of her Christian ideals and the belief in ultimate redemption and salvation for the spiritually fallen.
