Thanks for the upload Ash. The clip at 3:54 where I left a space for the ambulance to turn left was my clip. Just to clarify, personally I moved forward after and quite close to the car in front was because the car behind me had a left indicator on. If you look at the left turn, it's a give way, and not traffic light controlled, so the car behind wasn't waiting at the same set of lights as traffic going forward, so I'd rather give them the space behind and let them through.

As an HGV driver myself it’s nice to see these clips of people accommodating HGVs on the road. Unfortunately the wider population won’t see these videos and will continue to drive in stupid and dangerous ways to avoid being stuck behind them at all costs. And for that very reason, is why I’m exploring new career paths, to get myself away from driving HGVs But to all that sent those clips in, well done, it is very much appreciated

Many years ago, I worked for a courier company that was a mix of motorbikes, small vans and 7.5 tonners. Every delivery was 'a matter of life and death', you know the stuff, menus for restaurants, sample publicity materials, car parts, etc. When the recession hit in 1990, I was laid off. The instant relief from the daily stress was staggering. I went back to enjoying riding and driving.

I gave up driving in 2008, and despite the increase in pay, I would dread ever having to go back to it. The stress of the transport office calling every 20 minutes, and the stupidity of car drivers... well no thanks. Plus I'd now have to have a medical and do the CPC, and probably a few hours with a tutor again just to get my head back into gear.

@@davidkaye8712 Learn this phrase like your life depends on it, STFU I'm driving not you. Don't take shit from the traffic/transport office. They want to control EVERYTHING you do. Especially at first. Don't pay attention to them, put your phone on vibrate, or learn to ignore it. Take your time, do it the right way and not the way they want you to do it. There are some seriously great firms to drive for, but they are few and far between. My favourites are Goodalls (Sowerby Bridge) and Arla foods (north Leeds). They respect the driver and the pay and conditions aren't too bad, Arla pay is amazing but you do have to work for it, and they won't try to kill you to get more work out of you. I have no idea where you are, but there are probably local drivers who can recommend a good company. Don't go agency unless you absolutely have too. Containers can be great, hours and hours of just sit and watch TV. But they can be soul destroying to some people. It can be a really good job, if you don't let the arseholes get to you. Oh and some places expect you to know ever street, road, country lane, A-road and motorway in the country as soon as you pass your test. If you go down a road that looks dodgy, stop and ask. I took a wrong turn down Oxford once, I ended up doing a 40 mile round trip to turn around. 😂 I wish you all the best, it can on some days be the best job in the world. Others, the worst. Enjoy it as much as you can and drive safe.

This morning on a lesson a girl that has a test in a couple of weeks and is a very competent driver but lacks a bit of confidence with test Situations. We where at a roundabout where there are traffic lights and as she’s moved away when lights turned green she saw a lorry coming down faster in the next lane to her. She held back and let the lorry enter the roundabout first because she knew it was going to take more space. It was a real confidence booster for her.

Though I am intrigued and do watch his videos, I've never once hit that "like" button - there are far too many clips where the driver has made an issue out of something (speeding up when you should know that it'll cause conflict, cutting over a mini-roundabout as somebody is entering it, getting your bonnet in front because you feel it's your "right" to be ahead in a merge, and so on) and I don't feel that they need to be given the time of day if all it means is padding out the length of a video.

I was a bus driving instructor good number of years ago, one of the things I think should be compulsory for car drivers, but will never happen, is they should spend a few hours in the passenger seat of a HGV, or a few hours in a training bus, watching trainees drive.... and..... be sent out as a pillion passenger on a motorcycle! Hahaha!
@snuffypop
@snuffypop 3 жыл бұрын
It does have everything but blind spots tbh. The theory test now has a few questions like 'A lorry driver/bus is signaling right at a roundabout/turning into a road but is positioning to the left, what do you do' with the answers being overtake because they're signalling wrong/hang back and allow the driver room to turn/fix your makeup in the mirror/honk your horn or whatever. I don't think there's anything about blind spots but there's def stopping distance and road position questions on the theory!

As a HGV driver, I love how we all help each other out, making it easier for each other. If car drivers done the same to each other.... what a great experience driving would be! I find that doing manoeuvres like the tanker did, quite dangerous, but I also feel that most people, if they knew what you were doing, would give you time and space. More often than not, they don't know what your are going to do. The smaller, but increasing number of drivers, who believe no one has the right to delay them for a few seconds make it thinks harder.

Lorry drivers in general, in my opinion have great vision and good signalling. Just drove a couple dozen hours of motorway and other roads to Spain and back, so I’ve seen my fair share recently. In 9 out of 10 cases, they signal nice and early, try and not overtake right in front of someone going 100mph, put their hazards and blinkers on when there’s something on the road or the shoulder, or if you’re stuck behind them to let you know it’s braking time. But to be honest (maybe I’m optimistic in this sense), most road users on the motorway have decent awareness, you get a few exceptions, middle lane hogging, couple jump scares because people dont always check mirrors, but other than that since theres so much space, everyone can pretty much stick to their own rhythm, as long as people pay attention, which is why it’s my favourite place to drive.

The dangerous drivers? Unless somebody points it out to them, they will never improve. You are helping by beeping and shouting.... they become aware their driving is an annoyance to others and hence must improve before they knock over a cyclist or crash into a car!

I cannot drive anymore for medical reasons but I can relate to driving reactions. If an articulated vehicle passed me as soon as it was clear of me I would flash so he knew if was safe for him to pull in front of me. Don't concentrate on the car immediately in front but try to hang back if you have to react to the car in front of them. Last on as I now rely on public transport when a bus leaves the stop before yours I ring the bell it gives the driver time to anticipate what he and drivers in front of him will do especially ifin the dark

This is all lovely to see. I just wish some (not all) lorry drivers would return the courtesy. Why do so many feel the need to overtake each other at a 1mph speed difference on a busy dual carriageway? I was even on a single carriageway road stuck behind two lorries recently and when there was a relatively short dual carriageway section, one decide to pull out and overtake the other - it took them so long that none of the stream of cars had the chance to get by

@mclovinlife747
@mclovinlife747 3 жыл бұрын
@CycleCam UK that's not the reason truck drivers try to be professional. Cameras are usually required for insurance purposes because its a dangerous job. The cameras 9 times out of 10 prove it wasn't the drivers fault since even small incidents involving trucks can cause serious damage/injury and the risk of prosecution all wagon drivers know this. Most trucks on the continent don't have cameras because other road users are more aware of trucks and what spaces they need i.e. if a trucks hazards come on they trust that he has seen something or is about to perform a maneuver and needs space.

I live next to some industrial units which are off quite a narrow, twisty road. The road is really unsuitable for HGVs but it is what it is. I know the HGVs pull into the units often so if I see one pull up or put it’s hazards on, I always give it space until I know what it’s intentions are. As in the clip, they quite often have to use the whole road to make their manoeuvre. I’ve found that lorry drivers generally know what they’re doing. They’ll see you waiting and will wave you past if they can. Just keep an eye on the drivers cab window and their indicators. Sometimes they’ll even signal you from their own wing mirrors. That’s why I always stay far back enough that I can see both sides of the cab if it’s possible.

3:00 I use this roundabout at least once a week, and it can be an absolute nightmare. Especially at the moment, as there are long term roadworks causing a huge diversion to enter the dual csrriage way (which is where this lorry is heading toward) On a related note, the dual carriageway in question (A14) is constantly being closed overnight for "emergency repairs" and has been for the last few years now, which causes these lorries to have to cut through small villages and narrow town lanes. I have the utmost respect for these lorry drivers, as it must make their lives an absolute hell.

Enjoying your vids. Re: use of horns. I completely agree don't use it as a 'weapon' to show anger. In some cases it can make another driver 'freeze' which can also be dangerous. However, if a driver has made a dangerous maneuver, such as pulling onto a mini roundabout directly in front of you, then as long as they've gone past you (i.e. 'freezing' wouldn't endanger anyone), I think a restrained 'pip pip' is a good thing. It may make them realise they've made a dangerous maneuver. After all, use of the horn is supposed to indicate danger. Happy for comment.

Context is key with horn use. I don't think there's any issue with a quick 'blip' of the horn in situations where they should not have emerged. I feel like the majority of unsafe emerges are down to a lack of awareness. It's a mistake and they need to be aware of it. Just don't race up behind and blare your horn otherwise you're the one now causing the problem.

Clip #10 is local to myself and I can say that particular stretch of road is notorious for people doing exactly that kind of overtake. The worst thing is that literally just after where that video started there is a stretch of 2 lanes to allow vehicles to overtake slow moving wagons on an uphill stretch. Good job to your cammer because as you said many people close the space down for some reason, just give them the space and reduce the danger!

To me, clip #12 goes hand in hand with other situations like people reversing from their driveways and similar. Yes, maybe that stop was not necessary, but it did make sure nothing would go wrong. Cammer was just out of a roundabout, at a low speed, so they didn't lose much momentum. On the other hand, there might've been someone speeding further back, and it's easier to react to a stopped car in your lane with tail lights on, than to a lorry's nose moving towards you... You had a clip some months back where a van/lorry 'commanded' the situation in a small street, making sure the emerging vehicle has time, space and just safety in general, to do their manoeuvre

@@Jonc25 Often used to see a few "confused" drivers here. My usual depot was about 15 miles from there. Mixed memories of my Agency driving days and, on balance, glad to be out of it; and that particular part of the 🇬🇧. Got enough to contend with here - East Kent. You probably saw a 10 minute clip recently that does highlight what I'm up against on my rare forays into the wild 🤣. Take care, Jon 👍

I drove LGV's for 6 years. Still a keen cyclist, and an everyday pedestrian. Old Lorry salts used to say to me 25 yrs back, when I was going through my motorbike training, that car drivers and 2 wheeled operators should be 'made to sit in the cab of a lorry' as part of the test. To this day, he wasn't wrong....

Conversely, every car driver should be made to ride a bicycle and motorcycle before taking their test. It became really obvious in the 70s when we hit the point where most drivers hadn't started out on two wheels.

Totally agree, Pedro. When I'm on 2 wheels, I'm still hyper focussing what a car driver may or may not do. Driving is one thing; roadcraft is another....

In 2005, I’d been driving artics for a year, but nothing else, I had no car at the time. I hired a car to go on holiday, and couldn’t reverse park it for all the tea in China initially, it was very embarrassing. (When reversing a trailer, the towing vehicle is the steering for the trailer, so you have to steer the wrong way initially, then “chase the trailer in) as I describe it; and that initial counter steer was what was automatically throwing me lol)
@paulcollyer801
@paulcollyer801 3 жыл бұрын
Re clip 6; please understand, modern trucks are usually automatic, and many have a lag between flooring it & actually moving. This can often end with us edging out multiple times until it’s more dangerous for us to actually stop, and that’d be why we often “don’t give way”. This can be seriously compounded by people racing round with or without indication

As someone who has a car, motorcycle and LGV licence, experience in driving all three has made me a far more aware driver than only ever having driven one class could. Anticipate and if in doubt, slow down and keep your distance, and never pass an articulated LGV on a tight roundabout, the mirrors are fixed to the tractor, which creates huge blind spots, relative to the trailer, because the combination bends, WE CAN'T see you up the side in all circumstances, clear the roundabout, then pass.

At 6.28 I recognised that but of road, it's my home town, approaching the Worcester Road roundabout from Gil-gal. Thanks for a great video Ashley, it helps if awareness of the requirements for space required by trucks is spread far and wide. Also bear in mind, if you let a truck through it clears the way for everyone and keeps traffic moving. All too often I find myself in a stalemate situation, I can't move and car drivers won't give me the space, then they can't move because vehicles in front of them are held up. Someone has to yield and its easier for a car to make changes than a 60 ft long truck, even if it does bend.

Good video as usual, and nice to see some truck content. If you get the chance, would be nice to see you educate people on how futile an idea it is to try and squeeze up the side of a truck entering a roundabout with a 2 lane approach, not just squeezing up the inside but also the outside where often a wagon needs to go deep into the roundabout to avoid climbing the inside kerb with the trailer wheels (some of which are big enough to damage tyres)...maybe point out the highway code content on this issue. Cheers.

Really good to see someone who appreciates the difficulties that LGV drivers have. I had an Uncle who was a tw@ and a driving instructor in Australia, and he would deliberately overtake truck drivers and then pull in front and slow down going down hills. As a family we ended up having a massive argument with him as he did this once with me as a teenager in the car and his own newborn in the car too. 😱😠

Clip 15. I think I might have made the same mistake as the van pulling out of there. The road closed signs would make me think no one could be going straight on. I want to say I wouldn't have cut the junction as much, but it looks narrow and it's only visible in the outer edge of the camera lens so is potentially heavily distorted by the wide angle nature, combined with the high up viewpoint given by it being mounted on a helmet, so I can't really say for sure how that would be in person.

Clip 3, Hazard lights while still moving I would probably hang back, but looking at that tanker I wouldn't conclude going to the petrol station. It isn't the right type for fuel and doesn't have a flammable contents warning sticker on the back, just the hazardous to the environment sticker. Pretty sure fuel tankers need to display some other classification sticker with a number too that that one didn't have. I know that style of tanker can be used for food stuffs, but they obviously don't have hazardous stickers on them, just a 'foodstuffs' notice (the only way I know having seen them driving around :) ), probably for quick identification by emergency response personnel in the event of a collision, or maybe simply the companies that also use this style of tankers for other things so they don't mix up sterile tankers with those used for other stuff.

Excellent video and well done to everyone concerned. If everyone drove like this, driving would be more enjoyable. I’d just like to add, if you see a LGV, with foreign plates, best give them a little more space, especially on roundabouts as they quite often turn right from the left lane.

@@salerio61 Also, i didn't mean every observational error someone makes that you can see out of your windscreen needs a hoot of the horn.
