1) it's interesting how your approach mirrors a few other workshop spaces I've seen: being able to see the things (tools, materials etc) making life much easier. Adam Savage calls it "First order retrievability" and I both love it (because it works) and hate it (because I've never achieved it in any space ever) 2) Murder board: yes please!

Algorithms are an early form of artificial intelligence. If we refer to them as Gods, maybe they won't be so pissed off when they, um, 'wake up'? Wonderful room. Well done for all the work. Small suggestion - I've got my workspace set-up in a U-formation. The sewing machine is the bottom of the U. To the left is a flat surface. To the right is my ironing board. The sewing machine (a 1915 hand-crank Singer 99K) is sitting on one of those Ikea 6-drawer metal units. It holds all the supplies for the machine, drafting equipment, trims, tapes and a wee lace collection. The top drawer slides up and gets covered with a cutting board to provide more work space. Second suggestion - make Zufu-style meditation cushions to help manage your cabbage. I found instructions somewhere here on the on-line. They are easy to make and, with those deeply pleated sides, literally eat fabric scraps. They're also useful if you're stuck doing floor troll work. And they make nice gifts (or donate them to charity when everyone is cushioned-out). - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown

WOW! Glad you mentioned big cushions. Just this morning, I was thinking that I need to find a bigger cushion for my cats. I got them a bigger bed to sleep in, and their old cushion is like 2 inches too small all the way around. And guess what I have! Yep, fabric and cabbage! (this might be a forest for the trees situation -- why didn't I think of that?)

I was watching an organization show that I forget the name of, but she had a great model. Picture a four quadrant graph with two axis, one going from visible to hidden and the other going from macro to micro (detailed) organization. I am like you, a person who needs to be able to see my options otherwise I forget, so I'm more visual! And I value ease of putting things away more than ease of immediately knowing where to find something (I always get hung up on the best way to order things and then nothing gets put away), so I'm a more macro/general organizer.

I swear the Kallax in sewing rooms are ubiquitous! They are literally the best, most affordable, sturdy option around. I love mine. Our house currently has 2 in my studio, 1 in my partner's office, 1 in our front hall for shoes and 1 in the kids' room (all 4x2). I have a 2x2 in my bedroom for my bedside table. We

I love very serious and very silly…all mixed together…so I personally would love a murder board video. And I too am a “I don’t see it so it must not exist” person…and one cannot have too many reminders of that fact. Also, I love how you have set your work area up! Great ideas!

Firstly, yes to a light hearted goofy murder board video! Unfortunately I don't have a lot of space for my sewing stuff, much less than a room dedicated to it, most of my fabric is in boxes under the bed, and all other accessories (patterns, threads, UFOs etc) taking up large quantities of space under the living room window 😭 I'm hoping to sort some organisation out during the winter months, as I also completely forget what I have and then just... Get more stuff before using the old stuff first However when I do get to a point of having a room for sewing, this is a great video for how I can organise it!

I also have trouble remembering what I have when I cannot see it... and am in the process of putting up some additional wall storage for tools, etc. I bought the same pegboard for my wall. But you have so much more "stuff" as well as a better sense for how you will use it all. Thank you for giving me something to aspire to!

Yes! trays are so good!! I got a nice silver plated serving tray from the thrift store recently and I put all my sewing table clutter in it. I haven't got a thread rack, but I have a little oblong serving dish with feet that sits on the tray and I put any thread I have out in there.

Very helpful video! I personally don't have a sewing/work room, so my storage is all around the livingroom and bedroom and it's not great. I do personally prefer to have things in closed closets because seeing all of the things can be distracting, but I also would prefer to be able to see all of my fabric at once. I might work on that pattern directory you have, I like that a lot. But first, I need to do some cleaning and clearing things because my appartment is a disaster area... This is why I never have time for sewing, I just spend too much time on not doing the cleaning :(
@LiljaHusmo3 жыл бұрын
I also use those Kallax shelves! I really need to buy some more though as they're uuuhhh very full..... The seeing-what-you-have tip is very smart! I should implement that into my sewing studio as I too tend to just forget.
@hdubbs9174 Жыл бұрын
This feels so relatable-- especially when you said that things have to be visible otherwise you can forget them! My partner and I recently had a big fight about that. I said the same thing explicitly and he just didn't understand how I could forget what we have. I thought about making an inventory of my stuff--but I have to somehow do that in a really lazy way, like the system has to be easy to input stuff to.

HAHAHAHA! I got all excited because I have a little tray, too!! In fact, when I bought my little tray, people in the store commented on how useless it was, and was probably only good for decoration-- maayybeee. YAY! LITTLE TRAYS!!!! MURDEr BOARD!!! YES! Thank you, you cheered me up, I needed this, today. So, I have three bad habits, I collect plates and bowls (cuz they're pretty), I collect glass jars (cuz they're pretty), and I collect pretty beads to make into pretty necklaces (mostly). I combine the three, so my pretty plates and bowls and jars hold the beads. I can see them, because they're displayed on my shelves, and I keep all the beads for specific projects all together. Also, I keep all my ribbon wound on tongue depressors in large glass cannisters (ala Pinterest). It is a massive pain in the nethers to wind them all, initially, but afterward -- YES! I can see exactly what I'm after. {Before, I had them in plastic bags in baskets and that did NOT work because I couldn't see what I had -- it's funny how that keeps coming up.} Next stop, looking up kallax accessories! YAY! Thank you!

Depending on what size/shape of yarn you’re working with, I’ve found wine racks surprisingly useful for storing yarn!
@robintheparttimesewer67983 жыл бұрын
Wow your room looks great! I have a similar way of pattern storage. I photocopy the pattern and put that in a binder. Then file by number. I works great as I can go through the binder to see what I have and there’s room on the paper to write size info or a different location. Like the oversized patterns that don’t fit in the files. I have a combination of must see and tucked away. I recently got some drawers that I have filled and labeled. As I was going through things I found that I had some things in three different locations!!! No wonder I couldn’t find things. My biggest problem is that it’s my sewing/ crafts/ library/ office/ storage/ all hobbies room! I have far too many interests and not enough time or organization skills!!! Edit to add yes murder board!!!

Love to see other people’s working spaces. I use a similar divide-and-conquer on my patterns and envelopes. However, I keep my patterns in large paper envelopes, where I note down which projects I used the pattern for, plus any modifications that might improve fit or process next time I use the pattern. I can be a real trip down memory lane pulling out an oft used pattern! Thanks for your wonderful content

Re: visible yarn storage... Hung from ceiling somehow? Either in a net hammock, like children's stuffed toys, or from hooks, sort of like dried flowers,possibly on something like a clothesline? (No idea how much yarn you've got, but mine would probably make a layer across the whole ceiling)

One more sewing room to make me jealous as hell! Because I don't have a room for sewing. It has the share the desk with work in the corned of my living room. Meaning hiding pretty much everything on the shelves behind doors. Even there many things are in boxes because they would otherwise fall out. And also some things in one a narrow reach-in closet in the bedroom. No, it doesn't work well. I don't even manage to narrow down the materials and projects to a level which might work with this arrangement.

Our house came with a million very sturdy, old wooden hangers, so I was able to hang all my large cuts so they're visible at all time. I forget about things I can't easily see too 😂. It's a curse, but making things visible helps so much.

I know there is a KZbinr who has a wall of yarn... I'm trying to remember where I saw it and how it was done. It was beautiful. You could use pipes cut into maybe 6" lengths and attached...somehow...to the wall, like a honeycomb. Maybe glued to a board and then attach the board how you like.
